Landmark mixtapes

Were you turned on to good music by a particular mixtape made by a wiser and possibly older friend? Did you worship said mixtape and investigate the works of all of the artists featured on it? Does it still sound good today? What was on it?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I had one made for me that had

"Freak Scene"-Dinosaur Jr
"Just Gimme Indie Rock"-Sebadoh (When I was 13, I thought this was THE best song...)
"Hey"-The Pixies
"The Blue Room"-The Orb
"Waiting Room"-Fugazi
Some Black Dog stuff I can't remember
"Winona"-The Drop Nineteens

And other stuff on it. I can't listen to any of this anymore, but it served it's purpose (I still like "Winona" and "Waiting Room", actually).

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Off-topic, but-What happened to Black Dog,etc.???

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Christ, yes. I had a penpal who made me one in about 1986. It had all this amazing C86 and early Creation stuff on it - Shop Assistants, Young Marble Giants, Fuzzbox, Weather Prophets... I listened to it until it literally gave out. Wow. Each side was called "Ferris Wheels Tied To Your Forehead" and "Nasal Membranes Attack The City" or something like that.

kate, Friday, 4 April 2003 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I love it when they have titles like that. And cut n paste covers. And little soundbites inbetween the songs. Aaaaah. Is it my imagination, or is everyone's first mixtape either a "summer" mix or a "alone in my room sitting in front of a candle" mix?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Nordicskillz is right "Summer Mix" I have about 50 of those.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah, I think mine were "drunk mix" and "hungover mix".

kate, Friday, 4 April 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I once had a girl make a summer mixtape for me with a side-A that went like this:

her saying "Hi Nick! Here's your mix tape! RAWK!"
Michael Jackson's "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough"
Faith No More's "The Gentle Art of Making Enemies"
a Simpsons sample - Ralph Wiggum "I bent my wookie!"
Bjork's "Pretty Rocks"
Genius/Gza's "Shadowboxing"
Gong's "You'll Never Blow Yr Trip Forever"
her singing a brief a cappella version of the "Yesterday" song from Annie
They Might Be Giants' "Women and Men"

Side B was criminally F'd up, according to her it had Tori Amos & Beastie Boys & Frank Zappa on it, but when played it was totally silent save for a "HRKCHRKCVHRKH" sound.

God I loved that girl.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

That sounds great. Give her a call!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Gza followed by Gong!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Sadly a girl has never made me a mixtape. :(

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

HMM INTERESTING. (HOLDS CHEEK)

"Summer Mix"

My "landmark mixtape" was probably the Summer of '96 Mix given to me by my then-soon-to-be-boyfriend on our second date. I already knew a lot of the stuff on it, but it still really impressed the hell out of me and showed me what a terrific wooing device a mixtape could be. The one I made for him in return was probably even better, but I can't remember any of my choices.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

CHIN EVEN.

, Friday, 4 April 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

any takers?

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I NOMINATE THIS THREAD TO THE NOBEL PRICE IN LITERATURE.

, Friday, 4 April 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

you can call it summer mix.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Just join the indiepop swap Chris V and I'll hook you up. Maybe even Canadian girls ...

Whew, glad I put soundbites between the songs on that mix I just sent you Nordicskillz!

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Keith-I meant to write you about that! The Fast Food stuff is excellent! and Haysi Fantayzee! I have been rocking it in my car for the last week. Yes.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Sub-question: How do you go about making a mix CD for a rabid music fan who has pretty much the exact same tastes as you?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

where is that? indiepop swap?

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Any tape I would make would be incredibly twee if afraid and would most likely be hated.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

JBR-That's a tough one I am currently dealing with, having to reciprocate with mix cds for a few ILX0rs with impeccable and far-reaching tastes.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to make them completely random, like Nickalicious' girl's tape.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

That particular girl's wild uninhibited appreciation of all musics is a pretty good indicator of what type of person she is, very much a take-absolutely-nothing-for-granted type. Unfortunately she's married now. :-(

Jody: if possible, try making a mix CD with only very obscure tracks that you're damned certain they don't have. I did this recently, and it made them particularly happy.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't understand why people have such a morbid fear of putting stuff on a mix tape that they might already own. I mean, when you make yourself mix tapes for driving and stuff, you listen to the songs you know, so why wouldn't someone else enjoy choons they already have? The ideal mixtape should have a mix of choons they know and love mixed in with a few nuggets of newy goodness!

kate, Friday, 4 April 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah Chris, I run the indiepop swap. Where twee mixtapes are an asset, not a liability.

Nordicskillz, I'll use any excuse to pull out the Haysi Fantayzee vinyl again just so I can look at the bonus booklet.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Friday, 4 April 2003 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it all that good? An 80s friend laughed at me over the phone when I tried to give them "props".

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 4 April 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll start a thread.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Friday, 4 April 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a pen pal in NYC who was somehow able to buy every new punk record that came out in '77/'78 and put them on a tape for me. It was invalualble. Not that I wouldn't have bought all the same records if I had the money and lived a few blocks away from Bleecker Bob's. I remember they'd have stuff like the Adverts, Metal Urbain, the Cortinas, the Models, Eater, as well as all the bigger bands.

I have a Britpop-obsessed friend I re-connected with when I moved to LA who would make me tapes of every new UK record that came out (a far more expensive undertaking than the '77/'78 tape). There was more crap on these tapes, but it introduced me to Super Furry Animals and Gorky's.

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 4 April 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

so how do I get involved? Is there a link or something?

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 4 April 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

No link, I've been too lame to make a site for it. I'll send you a faq, though twee.net paraphrases it here. Though I now realize my e-mail address is wrong there ...

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Friday, 4 April 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

are cd-r's allowed. I will have filled most of them with Matt Pond PA songs.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 4 April 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

yep, CD-R's too. Though miscegenation is not allowed.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Friday, 4 April 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Nordicskillz, did you get my disc yet?

Indiana Zephyr (Fivvy), Friday, 4 April 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

"Still Kickin' the Dope Shit" from '93. created by...

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Friday, 4 April 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

(Indiana-yep! I'm doing yours right NOW...)

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 4 April 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

so what do i do to get started with this.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 4 April 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
In 11th grade (1986) my friend Felicia made a copy for me of a mixtape her cool friend from NYC had made her. Man, that tape blew my mind. Took me years to track down LPS by most of the artists on it (this was in the days befopre the Internet, kids - some I didn't actually find until Napster came along) - so I guess it really provided the framework for my musical tastes of my teens and twenties. Tracks of note:

Gand of Four - Damaged Goods
Cocteau Twins - Lorelei
Nick Cave - From Her to Eternity
This Mortal Coil - Holocaust
Wire - I Feel Mysterious Today

- plus assorted Buzzcocks, Clan of Xymox, Einsturzende Neubauten, Will Sergeant, David J, etc...

chr1sb0y (chr1sb0y), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

Charlie No.4 made me the ultimate landmark mix tape in December 1999. Stereolab, Belle and Sebastian, Lamb, Edwyn Collins, Add N to X, Prolapse, the Breeders, Barry Adamson and the Divine Comedy. I even appreciate the crap bits. (freq nasty?!?!)

It still plays, and I rediscover it every so often and go "my god, I was lucky to get this tape."

Kate Jane Connolly (fixitgirl), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:07 (twenty years ago)

seventeen years pass...

OK that's it, people need to check this out. Second thread bump
