I still find the Battle Hymns for Children Singing album completely entertaining. "John Wayne Is Big Leggy" is the standout to my ears, especially the John/Squaw spoken word bit in the middle. They were just a complete mess, lacking in restraint with 'inappropriate' instruments and styles. This whole thing is one way-too-overly busy throw-everything-in-the-sink type record.

I think the crazy left-field juxtaposition of the whole thing is what still interests me. "Shiny Shiny" is aggressively nonsensical with some of the strangest lyrics ever ... I spent months trying to figure it out before finally acquiring the record and then puzzling over the lyrics sheet. I don't know why I was surprised that it still made zero sense. The country hoedown style of "Shoo Fly Love" also is a big winner in my ledger.

Also ... surprise, surprise, the bonus booklet was actually worth tracking down.

"Shiny Shiny" is about nuclear destruction.

"I'm a hot retard, Marquis de Sade" Makes perfect sense to me.

Very classic.

They only had one album.

Right, then...

classic. i remember seeing "shiny shiny" when i was a kid and being utterly confounded. didn't actually find the album until two years ago and it's even more bizarre than i would've imagined.

plus perry farrell totally stole the guy's image.

F.Y.I.-Kate Garner took the band photos for the Post-Bow Wow Wow Matthew Ashman-guitared post-punk Paul Cook-drummed Richard Gottehrer-produced Chiefs of Relief album.

"Shiny Shiny" = about going out clubbing after the bomb drops.

I thought this review of the reissued CD, courtesy Aquarius in San Francisco, was hilarious:'
Just buy this record. If you've never heard it, then by all means you must. And if you liked them before, I know you've been dying for the definitive cd reissue of what is quite possibly one of the coolest records of the eighties.
Originally released in 1983, Haysi Fantayzee were a boy/girl duo (with an behind the scenes 3rd member), sort of a mix between Toto Coelo ('I Eat Cannibal') and Sigue Sigue Sputnik. Super catchy and super stupid. Plus I'm sure you all remember that song 'Shiny Shiny' which was their big hit.
And Kate Garner, the irrestable chanteuse from Haysi Fantayzee, was my first punk rock crush: I mean, a half shirt, leg warmers, fishnet body stocking, leather codpiece, dreadlocks, and an upside down cross on her forehead(!), what was a 13 year old boy to do?! Except maybe masturbate furiously.
This reissue has two bonus tracks and five remixes and is of course, highly recommended by Andee.

Tangentially related, but I was listening to "Everything Starts With An E" by E-zee Posse and my god is it still so good!

Also, the fact it musically references this, is kind of genius and so tenuous

Everything Starts with an E is perfection.

Shiny Shiny is, with Soundgarden's Spoonman, one of two Top 20 singles to use, um, spoons. That I can think of anyway. Would make a great pub quiz Q.
