As a counter to the boring muso shit, how about nominating the guitarist who has the least "chops" and technique, who can barely fucking hold a guitar the right way up and yet STILL produces great sounds. I think there can only be one winner:

Lou Reed

Jon. Fuckin. Spencer.

Slash

Duuuuuuuuude! Slash has more chops than Bruce Lee!

Lydia Lunch.

Also Kid Congo Powers. Except he can really play now. Bryan Gregory was great, too.

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 4 April 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Arto Lindsay mauls his fretboard in a harsh, tropical style, while remaining blissfully ignorant of chops n' licks.

Everyone at guitar center has the same chops?! and he didn't invent them. hes a caricature of someone with chops IMHO

Bo Diddley

Lots of reggae guitarists drop their muted chunka-chunks into exactly the right spots again and again, and never feel the need to bust out a bunch of blazing hot tweedle-dee-dees.

Yeah, but lou reed can actually play the guitar. Same with neil young. I would go for Johnny Thunders cuz he would forget how to play all the time live, but he always managed to sound really cool. Oh, and Harry Pussy too. They win, actually.

Didn't the dolls give Thunders the les paul jr because it had two less knobs?

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Friday, 4 April 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Johnny Ramone owns this thread.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Friday, 4 April 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

oh Mr. t/'/'t, I respectfully ask you to reconsider your Bo Diddley wisecrack/judgment. Bo Diddley belongs on the other thread, not this one. Dude INVENTED hot licks.

Neudonym, Friday, 4 April 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

dude, most of the hot licks on lou reed songs are either Robt. Quine or Mike Rathke.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 4 April 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

...can barely fucking hold a guitar the right way up and yet STILL produces great sounds.

*cause he doesn't hold the guitar the right way up*

Thunders would "forget" because of all the heroin the guy was on. He was an amazing guitar player otherwise.

Mick Collins

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 4 April 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Friday, 4 April 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)
