Gino Vanelli: S & D

Respect long overdue for Canada's greatest musical visionary! You can't tell me "People Gotta Move" isn't proto-machine disco to equal Wonder and Kingsley! "Brother to Brother" is the sound of Steely Dan growing a fuck-off big afro, not to mention some cojones! "Black Cars"! Sleek like Challenger without being fish food!

Most of all - nobody in history has ever suited their given name like this goombah. (Hey, it's alright, I have dago ancestry myself!)

tarden, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Why did I see this one coming from a mile away? And does anyone else wonder why Gino Vannelli and Ho ward Stern have never been seen in public together?

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oh yeah ... Leo Sayer had a better 'fro!

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Wrong - Gino had a MULLET 'fro!

tarden, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Search: "I Just Wanna Stop", the really-quite-good-I'm-not-joking "Wild Horses". But Tarden would know more about him than I do.

Patrick, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Ha ! THis focker used to have this recor d that was always in the bargain bin at Strawberries and he looked liek such a poof! THis lacy shirt with a V neck and a huge curly hair...I always remember thinking " That record must really suck. " I would often point it out to my freinds in sport.

Mike Hanle y, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Did Gino Vanelli sing "I Just Wanna Stop", a song I actually remember? No matter, the fact that Tarden chose this obscure and hysterical name for a S&D has me laughing out loud, which is a good thing.

Sean, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I never thought I'd live to see the day when I was partaking in a Gino Vanelli discussion group. Okay, but he's no Milli.

scott woods, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Even though you're my namesake, Sean, I feel obligated to call you a heartless bastard! Gino Vanelli obscure? MY GOD, MAN! He literally ruled the Canadian airwaves! (I believe tarden has claimed either Canadian blood or at least put in some time, so this S and D would be as natural as DAN HILL: Classic or Dud...or Tommy Hunter: RFI.)

At any rate, destroy most of his bare-chest material, but search "Black Cars", surely an indictment of hyper-makeupped clubbies if there ever was one.

Coming Soon...Honeymoon Suite: S & D, Glass Tiger: C or D? Tu: Do twins really suck twice as hard?

Taking Sides: corporate-rock Haywire vs alt-rock Haywire

is everything on this bit canadian? because i really haven't the faintest idea what any of you are talking about?

the pinegareth, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Haywire. Good god. At least nobody's mentioned Big House or Boulevard yet.

tarden, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Gareth - if you had ANY knowledge of what we're talking about, I'd be worried for you (indeed all Canadian stuff).

Tarden - I'm afraid that my knowledge doesn't extend to Big House and Boulevard, but don't get me started on Cats Can Fly and Eight Seconds !

Michael Morales = Classic Gino-lite
Did you know Sass Jordan was briefly mooted to join Van Halen?

tarden, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Mitsou search and destroy>?>???

Personally, I would like to see Momus and Mitsou cover Some Velvet Morning .....

doompatrol23@hotmail.com, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Sass Jordan in Van Halen ??? Why, to replace Sammy ??

Mitsou Search : "Mademoiselle Anne", "A Funny Place" and "Dis-moi dis- moi"
Destroy : "Bye bye mon cowboy", all cover songs
Absolute Bottomless Pits Of Horror: "Les chinois", "La corrida"

Patrick, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I thought our Ms. Jordan was auditioning to replace Jimmy Guy from Extreme, since his time in Van Heflin was very very brief.

Not only am I fully aware of the Big House, I can name you members of the band. There are some days that I really regret having managed a record store, because I know:

  • The desperation of marketing bands like Big House and Leslie Spit Tree-O to audiences that didn't care regardless of the band's merit (the Tree-O) or not (Big House)
  • That the Northern Pikes were actually nice guys yet couldn't score a hit after "She Ain't Pretty"
  • What Wild T's bare chest looks like from close up
  • about the existence of Slik Toxic

Kick Axe: Cash cows or Evil whores ?

Patrick, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Then there were Helix, for people who found Kick Axe too obscure and elitist for their tastes.

tarden, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Gimme an R ! O ! C ! K!
What you got ? ROCK !

Battle of the Raging Rock Gods : April Wine vs Chilliwack

It's hilarious how both bands started in the very early 70s as spacey psychedelic folk (at least the album covers and song titles LOOK like they would sound that way - it's not like I've LISTENED to them) and ended up going so far beyond corporate-rock that they made Journey sound like Royal Trux. Not that I don't love "Just Between You And Me" and "My Girl"... gonegonegone she been gone so long she been gonegonegone so long

The Parachute Club: Throw them from a plane? One to One: How did they resist putting a '2' in there? M+M vs The Headpins. Rough Trade: Classic or Ewww? Joni Mitchell vs. Anne Murray: In a catfight, who would win? Wreck of the Gordon Lightfoot in a Bottle by Sundown.

Kim, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'd happily throw the Parachute Club off a plane for committing "Sexual Intelligence" to vinyl - One To One DID end up putting a 2 in there, sadly - Anne Murray would SO kick Joni Mitchell's pretentious folkie ass, unless Joni's California buddies get involved, in which case she can just have David Crosby sit on Anne.

Chilliwack v April Wine - no contest! Chilliwack hit a creative peak in the mid-70s, with 'Dreams, Dreams, Dreams' (moronic title notwithstanding), perfect collection of melodic bittersweet yet hard- driving pop ("California Girl", bittersweet swoonsomeness). In fact, anything with the Henderson-Lawrence-Turney line-up. Notable from their AOR period is Henderson's manic John Fogerty impersonation on "Really Don't Mind", and "Don't it Make Ya Feel Good" - FM-metal obviously written with a possible Molson commercial in mind, with its peculiarly Canadian pussy approach to decadence - "It's 99% illegal/ but that ain't dick, it's just the crowd"!
