Can you dance "The Hustle"?

I can't, I could never get it. I had several chances to learn because I used to teach at a summer program for young musicians that had folk dancing, and for variety they'd throw in The Hustle. All the kids pick it up fast. They're good musicians and pretty soon you get a whole room full of young 'uns double-timing it to Ace of Base's "The Sign" (Yes, this actually happened.)

I think it's the 90-degree turns that throw me off, you can't keep facing whoever's supposed to be teaching you.

Yes I can more or less handle that one.

I want to learn to hustle, but getting better at salsa is more of a priority for now, along with picking up some smooth ballroom to make my SO happy. Actually, I need to talk to her about having her teach me some hustle.

I am taking a dance class right now and thus far I have learned the waltz, the hustle and the Virginia reel. I think I could quit right now and have all my bases covered - in what situation is one of these inappropriate?

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 5 April 2003 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

We were graded on our ability to dance the hustle in high school gym class. Once we learned the basic steps, we were taught variations such as the Spanish hustle. The dialogue in Saturday Night Fever gives me the impression that countless hustle variants were once practiced, many of which have been lost to history.

I received an "A" for my disco skillz, but had little opportunity to exercise them after graduation. I like to think that I could still do a rough approximation of the hustle if I had to, though.

I have a book called The Complete Guide to Disco Dancing (1978), with photos of the instructor doing all the steps. I'll try to scan in a few pics tomorrow.

Supposedly the hustle is derived from swing dancing, according to a local dance studio.
