(I'm on record as being the big 5D fan here)

"the"? ahem.

-- Jody Beth Rosen (edito...), April 5th, 2003 3:00 AM.

although the free design were better...

-- Jody Beth Rosen (edito...), April 5th, 2003 3:00 AM.

Since you want to take the absurd road leading to the Free Design over the 5th D, that leaves me "THE" status. Haha Jody hoist by your own petard!

The Fifth Dimension had more hits and Bones Howe productions. The Free Design garnered more credibility for being obsessively name checked by Stereolab, et al. But the Free Design did not have such a rockin' cover version of Sunshine of Your Love! 5-D win!

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Saturday, 5 April 2003 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

But the Free Design took Prokofiev's Lt. Kije Suite and turned it into a scat song about a Ouija board!

(that's scat as in scat, not as in scat)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 5 April 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

On the other hand, "Last Night (I Couldn't Get to Sleep at All)" makes my heart throb.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 5 April 2003 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

And yes, Laura Nyro, Jimmy Webb, etc.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 5 April 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"Age of Aquarius" vs. "2002 a Hit Song"

Astrology vs. pop music - war of the pseudosciences!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 5 April 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Didnt the Free Design sing the Sesame Street theme song? Hmmm. Tough one, that. They get one point deducted for tweeism, then! : -)

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Saturday, 5 April 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, I'll fess up: I've never heard the Free Design. I just love the Fifth D a whole freakin' lot, think they're one of the most underrated and unfairly disparaged groups ever, etc. They were also incredibly corny at times to go with their undeniably deep soulfulness.

And Marilyn McCoo, at least for a while, was the sexiest woman in the history of U.S. pop music; doubly so because she didn't seem to have any sense of that at all. Once she realized it, she was over...and Debbie Harry stepped in to fill the void.

Current title-holder: Daniela Mercury and/or Gigi.

Neudonym, Saturday, 5 April 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Marilyn McCoo gets posts for hosting the early eights SOLID GOLD! (The american version of Top of the Pops). (Meta: What happened to Adrian Zmed?)

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Saturday, 5 April 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

same thing that happened to Bob Zmuda!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 5 April 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

(Neud -- I'll make you a CD-R of Free Design stuff.)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 5 April 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Jody make sure you put KITES ARE FUN on it.

Another point for Fifth Dimension - their entire back catalogue can be obtained for a dollar. Rather than the freakishly expensive Free Design records.

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Saturday, 5 April 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

haha anyone's entire back catalogue can be obtained for free on SOULSEEK!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 5 April 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

(not that i endorse such a thing)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 5 April 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

JBR: I'll make you a boss cassette of 5D stuff you might not have. Are you in possession of the "Live" album? Or have you Soulseeked it all up already?

Neudonym, Saturday, 5 April 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The Free Design are fantastic, but I love The 5D very much also, especially the Jeff Comanor stuff on the Stoned Soul Picnic LP.Also love their version of 'Flashback' from '73.I'd add The Association,The Groop & Roger Nichols & The Small Circle of Friends to fight it out for top harmony group.Just been watching the videos on www.theassociation.net,total pop heaven.

Paul R (paul R), Saturday, 5 April 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you in possession of the "Live" album?

Nope. Make you a trade -- my FD for your 5D.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 5 April 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

PS Check out the 'Birthday Morning'video on The Association site-wonderful song, fantastic visuals.A mention also for The Cowsills & The Love Generation.

Paul R (paul R), Saturday, 5 April 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Jody can you make me a copy too? I am soulseekless.

Amateurist (amateurist), Saturday, 5 April 2003 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

dimension no. 5 - IT'S THE FIFTH DIMENSION!

classic maN!

michael wells (michael w.), Saturday, 5 April 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Amateurist:

Sure. Send me yr address. It might take a while... I just ran out of blank CDs so I have to buy more, plus I owe stuff to people, plus I'm lazy and scatterbrained. Shit, I should just start a thread saying "If I owe you something, raise your hand."

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 5 April 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i think 5D would be the winners for this one. however 'age of aquarius' makes me wanna puke. in my book, it's just one of those godawful songs. but songs like 'marry me bill' are very groovy. 5D all the way.

JP Albin (John Paul Albin), Saturday, 5 April 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Destroy: the 5D and the FD

Search: The Bugaloos

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 5 April 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

They're in the air and everywhere!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 5 April 2003 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

(ha, 's really great to imagine that p'haps this image did inspire that "...ballerinas" cartoon - wot was its name again? - in the 90s)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Saturday, 5 April 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow!I'd love to hear The Bugaloos, was it a tv show?

Paul R (paul R), Saturday, 5 April 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, a Sid & Marty Kroft kids TV show with a bunch of sort of MOR-glam New Seeker-type British insect people. I like them fine and I like the Free Design but the 5th Dimension are so so so so much better than either of them. Plus The Age of Aquarius is my first album. Also, none of the other bands really make me want to dance. Search: "Puppet Man", "Carpet Man".

Free Design are a lot creepier, though. I'll give them that. "Make the Madness Stop"!

Arthur (Arthur), Saturday, 5 April 2003 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I had a crush on all the Bugaloos.

And yeah, JBR, I owe you like two or three cassettes now, so don't sweat it.

Neudonym, Sunday, 6 April 2003 06:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Fritz to thread! Or not, I don't want him to get creeped out.

Sean (Sean), Sunday, 6 April 2003 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i've only ever heard Kites are fun...but its so wonderous i'll vote for FD (and, er Jody, er, would you, i mean, um, i'd quite like if, er, you'd do me a FD too, maybe, um...)

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 6 April 2003 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

OK.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 6 April 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Astrology vs. pop music - war of the pseudosciences!

is the answer in the stars?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 6 April 2003 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

four months pass...
Today is the absolutely perfectest day to listen to the Free Design. I'm so happy there actually was a thread about them!

cybele (cybele), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I would go with the Free Design, but I really haven't heard much of the 5D other than "Age of Aquarius".

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

jbr never sent me the free design mix. but then, i still haven't finished her mix tape.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll send it! i just got more cd-rs and they're burning a hole on my bookcase.
