I only have the laboratoire mix, just got it this week. I know some of his other stuff. I fucking love that mix though, especially the part where beyond the dance comes in.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 5 April 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

the laboratoire mix is just about the best mix you can get: (hidden trak ) "amazon", the felix da housecat track, "you got to believe".
but as a producer, he's not great. "acid eiffel" (on the lab mix) and "the man with the red face" are outstanding but there's not much else. as a dj he *was* brilliant but i'm not sure now.

(he's playing the next bugged out! i think)

michael wells (michael w.), Saturday, 5 April 2003 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

f communications and fnac are, by the way, dead average labels.

michael wells (michael w.), Saturday, 5 April 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

do you like sound of the big baboo or whatever?

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 5 April 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

that album is a good album. the guy doesn't excite me though.

michael wells (michael w.), Saturday, 5 April 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

he's meant to be here again soon, I missed him about two weeks ago.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 5 April 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i've heard him play out a few times at cream, bugged out! and voodoo and he was brilliant but i think his star has set.

michael wells (michael w.), Saturday, 5 April 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

have you seen anyone good lately?

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 5 April 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

This is like a perfume thread, right?

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 5 April 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

last time we went out was to bugged out. i went to see erol alkan again but my mate is a bit of a lightweight and we left early. we heard most of tayo and he was nowt special. the bit we heard of e.a was pretty good. you shd come over to liverpool sometime, i'm serious.

michael wells (michael w.), Saturday, 5 April 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I like him more than Michael does. Red Face is a really great tune (there's an outstanding Funk D'Void remix too), but so was Crispy Bacon. I know it's all about tunes for Ronan, but I think Unreasonable Behaviour is a tremendous album (The Warning is another highlight). The only other album of his I have is Shot In The Dark, which is very good too, though not really in the same league.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 5 April 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I might do in the summer, I'd be well up for it.

Martin I am totally open to the idea of albums, despite my rallying on the other thread suggesting otherwise!

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 5 April 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

just let me know and there's somwhere here to get your head down.

michael wells (michael w.), Saturday, 5 April 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

cool, it would be good to have a night out alright, definitely!

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 5 April 2003 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't think you were against albums, just that highlighting individual tunes might be a more persuasive angle. I grew up in rockist times, and buy far more albums than singles, but I am aware that this isn't necessarily how The Kids think.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 5 April 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

"it's only 40 quid on easyjet".

"i know"

michael wells (michael w.), Saturday, 5 April 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

seriously, let me know when you're up for it and we're right.

michael wells (michael w.), Saturday, 5 April 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i think Unreasonable Behaviour was a good album - at least i enjoyed it, it grew on me - a few of the tracks are quite samey to be honest and there are only a few full on stormers like '..Big Babou' - the downtempo stuff is quite dreamy and in the vein of the recent Ulrich Schnauss stuff...you may also be quite amused by the track at the end 'Last Tribute To The 20th Century' which is just a woman going on about how cities like Chicago and Detroit are so great for yielding house and techno.

also try 'Astral Dreams', 'Moonbeam', 'Flashback' (for novelty aspect) tracks as well as the stuff already mentioned

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 5 April 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

It will happen, I promise!

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 5 April 2003 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

cool.

michael wells (michael w.), Saturday, 5 April 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Flashback is like one of my favourite tracks ever

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Sunday, 6 April 2003 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Garnier's mix of 'silver screen shower scene' was a tad disappointing i thought, his mix of Jazz Juice's 'Detroit' is nice though, but not full on like he can be.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 17 September 2004 10:34 (twenty years ago)

i listened to Unreasonable Behaviour for the first time in ages last weekend (at that dreamspace bubble thing in dulwich park) and it sounded fantastic. The Sound of the Big Babou/Vitalic connection is unmistakeable obv.

pete b. (pete b.), Friday, 17 September 2004 10:35 (twenty years ago)

Did see Millsy & Garnier last week in Amsterdam and they were lots of fun. Mills even played Pet Shop Boys! :) (besides loads of cool old house records, you know those Steve Pointdexeresque workthatbodyworkthatbody kinda tracks)

anyway, do any of you know if they are going to translate Garnier's Electrochoc book? It looks pretty good (sort of a Energy Flash without the ideological pipedreams, Big Beat and a more friendly attitude towards Mills ;) but my french is a bit rusty these days.

Ronan, you also should check out his X-Mix (it's part 2 IIRC).

CRISPY BACON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 23 March 2006 05:45 (nineteen years ago)

is this electrohouse?????

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 23 March 2006 05:45 (nineteen years ago)

garnier is the father of electrohouse. saw him last year and he was playing "mandarine girl", so right!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 23 March 2006 07:44 (nineteen years ago)

The Speaker mix of "Astral Dreams" is totes a techno classic.

It's true, Garnier's production often has a "flat-footed", heavy and rectilinear quality with loud acidy modulations that both predates and resembles a lot of electrohouse. Destroy most of it anyway, search the book and the mixes (X-Mix in particular).

blunt (blunt), Thursday, 23 March 2006 13:00 (nineteen years ago)

i ws unreasonably harsh abt him up there.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 23 March 2006 19:54 (nineteen years ago)

I am the geek posting to this thread asking if anyone has a ysi of 'astral dreams', I was jonesing for this track just three days ago

I'll go find myself a copy of his 'X-Mix'

milton parker (Jon L), Thursday, 23 March 2006 20:09 (nineteen years ago)

can we keep all the ysi requests to the thread that's dedicated to it? i mean it sucks to click on threads meant for discussion and (ha!) insightful commentary and just find people asking for tunes.

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 23 March 2006 20:11 (nineteen years ago)

that's cool -- you are correct

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000083YK/sr=8-1/qid=1143145203/ref=sr_1_1/104-6461741-8675115?%5Fencoding=UTF8

used and new, $30, will have to look harder than amazon

milton parker (Jon L), Thursday, 23 March 2006 20:21 (nineteen years ago)

Half of the comp = Detroit classics.
Back in 94 J3ff M1lls happily picked up a copy at the shop when we had him play in Geneva, he was looking for K3nny L4rkin's Track that came out on Warp, at the time it was probably difficult to get in Detroit where it was made.
