Here's a short list of some of the '80s songs that make me feel absolutely wonderful when I listen to them:

Peter Godwin, "Baby's in the Mountains"
Siouxsie and the Banshees, "Peek-a-Boo"
Blancmange, "Don't Tell Me"
The Bongos, "Numbers with Wings"
Cyndi Lauper, "Money Changes Everything"
Icehouse, "Hey Little Girl"
The Bolshoi, "Sunday Morning"
Human League, "The Things that Dreams Are Made Of"
The Church, "Myrrh"
Spandau Ballet, "Communication"
Romeo Void, "Never Say Never"
Lene Lovich, "Lucky Number" (is that really '70s, though?)
Comsat Angels, "Independence Day"
Classix Nouveaux, "Is it a Dream"

Happy listening. :)

p.s.: Siegbran -- I LOVE "The Great Commandment" by Camoflauge! That's a great '80s song.

p.p.s.: Many of the above mentioned are also on my "'80s favorites" list, e.g. Falco's "Der Kommissar", Peter Schilling, Trans-X, BELFEGORE (heh -- though my favorite song of theirs is "Into the Dungeon", followed closely with "Comic With Rats Now" and "All That I Wanted").

p.p.p.s.: I totally forgot to mention:

"Open Your Eyes", The Lords of the New Church
"This is the Day", The The
"The Headmaster Ritual", The Smiths
"Other Voices", The Cure
"Hypnotize", Scritti Politti
"The Mercy Seat", Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
"House of Fun", Madness
"Talking to a Stranger [UK Album Version]", Hunters & Collectors
"Don't Talk to Me About Love", Altered Images

and about 10,000 other '80s songs I adore. And I haven't even hit on my top three favorite musical artists' songs!

Yes, I *heart* the '80s, all right.

There are too many choices, if, when, why, what...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 April 2003 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

OH! Don't forget "Your Love" by Outfield.
I like to listen to that song obsessively sometimes. As in, like 8 times in a row or so.

Emily M. (stolenbus), Monday, 7 April 2003 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Der Kommisar is possibly the greatest song ever, but only the original. The cover is crap and saddening. You should really just go and buy the whole Falco's Greatest Hits, I used to have it. I think one of my exes stole it, because it's just that good.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 7 April 2003 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I like listening to Falco because a lot of times I can't tell if he's speaking in German or English so I start piecing together phrases that may not be there, something like "einschter gutten Mr. Whipple ach mein Slap Me Now I'm Hungry."

I should get Greatest Hits. All I've got is a really dirty cassette of Falco 3.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 7 April 2003 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Needed to be asked:
TS: "Der Kommisar" vs "Du Hast!"

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 7 April 2003 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

That's actually the chorus to Vienna Calling, you know.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 7 April 2003 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

So a Schmarrn. De Leit hier kan kan Weanerisch.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Monday, 7 April 2003 08:51 (twenty-two years ago)

You should really just go and buy the whole Falco's Greatest Hits

When in Germany, just look in any big record store - I found massive stacks of the Helden von Heute best-of everywhere for 5 euro a year ago, and a friend of mine recently returned with the best-of DVD.

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 7 April 2003 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a really horrible remake of Der Kommisar with new lyrics called "Thieves In The Night" on Laura Branigan's second album. But I can't hold that against her when she keeps rising out of her bed in a long buttondown shirt and screaming "SOLITAIRE!" at me (grrr...). She, Joan Jett and Stevie Nicks are the vixens of VH1 Classic.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 14 April 2003 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

no mention of After The Fire yet?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 14 April 2003 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

five years pass...

I'm thinking of After The Fire, and After The Fire only. Falco can suck it.

Good lord, people, when this song was popular I never even SAW the video. It wasn't easy to see videos, then, anyway. Not in a small town...
