All I remember is their awesome single "the bushes scream while my daddy prunes". I saw 2 CDs in a bargain bin, but they weren't that cheap. What's their other stuff like. My mate Keith23 claims that their singer is the same person as tim smith from the cardiacs (gulp) is this true? Fire away, ye obscurists.....

xoxo

Can't say i can remember there music much but search if you can an interview they did with NME around '86 in which all the questions asked were the same questions reporters asked Elvis Presley when he joined the army (I think). Very funny.

No doubt someone even sadder than me has a copy.

Classic for the singles "Motortown" and "Let's Go Out" in 1987. Haven't heard them fora while, but IIRC they were actually pretty commercial - thumping beat, driving surf-a-billy guitars and surreal lyrics. Not true about the singer - The VTs singer was The Shend (Chris Harz) formerly of Crass Associates The Cravats and DCL (Dada Cravat Locomotive) and last seen acting in East Enders amongst other things.

a few years ago i was in a similar position to yourself. i knew nothing else by the band, but remembered "prunes", largely because of the outrageous video.

in order to prove that the whole thing wasn't just a half remembered nightmare i purchased a very things compilation, possibly one of the ones you've seen, though i forget the name. on the whole it was lo- fi sub-cramps rockabilly, which left my boat unfloated.

even the wonderfully bizarre "prunes" is really just a gothic novelty record, not unlike "bela lugosi's dead", and loses its appeal fairly quickly.

The Very Things have flipped my lid. Does anyone know what video they might have had on Snub TV? How can I get ahold of the Motortown album for crying out loud?

It came out on CD with a pile of extra remixes, etc. on Fire records maybe try Action records in the UK? I think they might have it,and they're a pretty decent place. "Let's Go Out" is a great song, though that Motortown album (mini-album, I guess) is my least favourite of their records. I don't have any of them on CD, as they're not that easy to find (good luck!), but I'd really love to have their second, unreleased-on-LP, album. "Mummy, You're a Wreck" was from around that time and might appear on it; I don't know.

I could have punctuated that, I guess.

Good to see there are still some people who still like VT.
I'm from the netherlands and know them from my punk days, especialy "The bushes scream...." and the later babymen "one little indian for king willy"
Is there anyone who made mp3's of these, as the org. are unavailable in the netherlands

I have those three reissues that came out on CD, picked them up on clearance a while back -- but me being me, I still have yet to actually LISTEN to the darn things.

'The Bushes Scream' Very Things LP and the Cravats 'Colossal Tunes Out' LP are classic out-of-time garage-punk-psyche LPs which I played to death in the eighties. Records to get lost in, huge slabs of weirdness. Really, really, wish I'd seen 'em live. Deserve to be a cult, though humour and SF references may be offputting for some. Got strong flashbacks recently, watching Ubu do a live soundtrack to 'It came from outer space' in 3d, from whence the vocal excerpt in 'Information' off 'Bushes. .' is culled.

It's a real shame none of them seem to be involved in music anymore, although Shend used to crop up regularly as a heavy on UK TV drama, and had (or has) a column in Bizarre magazine.

i recall seeing the vid. this was at the sasme time i had a brief desire to purchase records by the Dave Howard Singers. something in my head connected the 2 bands, i guess the connection was mr john peel.
