Now I'm torn! I have advocated more threads outside ILM's core interests (such as in country, soul, blues, etc.), but I have always been against these OP/PO things. Also, Dave's is such an excellent list that I wouldn't make many changes at all.

I'm growing to dislike lists, too. But, damn, Haggard's got lots of good tunes. There's a tribute album to him that alerted me to a lot of his better songs called Tulare Dust. Big City, I Can't Be Myself, and You Don't Have Very Far To Go, in particular, all done by women on this album, are real standouts, and surprised me a lot. But ya also gotta love Swingin' Doors and Sing Me Back Home.

I've only got the Greatest Hits (but I've got a couple of his albums on order) so I'd struggle to name a 10 that differs much from Dave's. I would definitely add 'Mama Tried' though.

I'd sub "I never picked cotton" for "I take a lot of pride" but otherwise q's list is otm and his first 2 picks would top my list too

i'd add "tulare dust," "go home," and "mama tried" (and prob. drop "the fightin' side of me" -- "when i strike" is a better kinda-political merle song anyway -- though i'd keep "okie" 'cause it's catchy).

but otherwise dave q's list is OTM.

don't ignore his new
duet with Marty Stuart:
it's called "Farmer's Blues"

Haikunym, Wednesday, 30 July 2003 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Absolutely must include Mama Tried. I would add "workin man's blues" just 'cause I like it.

Don't have enough to pick 10 but there's this song on his record "Ramblin Fever" called "Ghost Story" that's really wonderful. "I Can't Stand Me" and "The Longer You Wait" are both bitchin too, those and "Swinging Doors" and "The Bottle Let me Down" are all off his first or so album "SWINGING DOORS AND THE BOTTLE LET ME DOWN" which is one of the best country recs I've heard, tho that's not saying a huge amount. I really like the Fall.
