I say Kill the Klan unless Alvarius B counts - then it's Cooking with Satan.

I'll take the easy way out...
Torch Of The Mystics

brg30 (brg30), Sunday, 6 April 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

"The Venerable Song (The Meaning Of Which Is No Longer Known)" (from Bright Surroundings, Dark Beginnings)

Yeah, it's 22 minutes. but it's ONE 22 minute song and therefore qualifies. ha... HA... MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 6 April 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

roger adultery, feelin' the comedy. when i lived in florida i had a metalhead friend who bought "horse cock phepner" solely because it was called that and he loved to play it for people as 'the most fucked up thing you'll ever hear.' dunno if that's true.

since i'm way more into their faux-psych moments (and really dislike the vocals, generally), i'll choose 'cineria blue' from "330,003 crossdressers from beyond the RIG veda." the swirling, the swirling!

"torch of the mystics" - am i the only one who finds this album substandard and irritating? "libyan dream" actually seems like a much better example of that period of their development. selling my copy soon anyway.

"My Painted Tomb"

Famous Athlete, Monday, 7 April 2003 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Gotta go with "Napoleon and Josephine" here (yes it's split into two parts but it's one "song"...).

runner-ups: "The Fine-Tuned Machines of Lemuria" and "A Secret Revealed Unwittingly," which still gives me the heebie-jeebies.

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 7 April 2003 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Null, I also prefer Libyan Dream to Torch, but I don't think Torch is overrated by any means

and the Salvador Kali record, of course, slays everything

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 7 April 2003 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"My Friend Rain" from one of the more recent Carnival Folklore discs is definitely one of the greatest songs they've recorded, so beautiful. Dante's Disneyland Inferno def. = scariest SCG record!

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Monday, 7 April 2003 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

...and of course the version of the "Batman" theme that they played on your show, Brian...

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 7 April 2003 03:59 (twenty-two years ago)

salvador kali = insane. but "torch of the mystics" ain't all that, says i.

that CFR disc with "my friend rain" (sumatran electric chair) is really pretty amazing.

your null fame (yournullfame), Monday, 7 April 2003 04:00 (twenty-two years ago)

"X+Y = Fuck You"

(runner up, "Space Prophet Dogon"; ynf you're nuts)

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 7 April 2003 05:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i know, man, i know.

your null fame (yournullfame), Monday, 7 April 2003 11:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i am a huge SCG fan but i don't think 'torch of the mystics' is even in the upper half of their material.
'apna desh' from '300,003 crossdressers' is pretty amazing, perhaps that would be my pick....tho napoleon and josephine does tend to weave together the most disparate aspects of their personalities.
'black tent' anyone? 'plaster cupids falling from the ceiling'?

j fail (cenotaph), Monday, 7 April 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

your full name, are you selling a vinyl copy of Torch? If so, get in touch, I'll make you a nice offer.

Been curious about SSG for a long time. Can anybody recommend a couple of good introductory CDs?

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Monday, 7 April 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

It's pretty hard to pick just one because they're such a multi-faceted band. Well that, and the fact that they have so many gosh-darn releases that they can be pretty inconsistent. Despite some of the naysaying upthread, I really think Torch of the Mystics is their best - regardless of whether or not that's conventional wisdom. The two double cd sets that were released simultaneously, 300,003 Crossdressers and Dante's Disneyland Inferno are also high points. Unfortunately those and many, many other releases remain frustratingly out of print. Drop me an email and I'll burn you some stuff.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 7 April 2003 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

if only it was a vinyl copy, i could sell it, buy a house and retire.

CIVET'S TANGO!!!

Or "C.C.C."

Man, 330003 Crossdressers is an amazing record.

jon dale, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

330,003 crossdressers blows 'torch of the mystics' right out of the water, in my opinion. it's not as much a 'rock records' as 'torch,' of course.

your null fame (yournullfame), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

can anyone burn me / dub me a copy of Jack's Creek? By my calculation, it's the only official SCG release i've never heard. Will trade

totally predictable answer: Space Prophet Dogon from Torch of the Mystics.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 8 January 2006 17:13 (nineteen years ago)

so many faves but i'll second dan on the predictable answer - space prophet dogon rools.

for an album - 330,003 crossdressers.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Sunday, 8 January 2006 17:59 (nineteen years ago)

I knew I would have do this some day. So many good choices, but I pick "Cooking With Satan" as well (there is an actual SCG version on Box Of Chameleons).

sleeve (sleeve), Sunday, 8 January 2006 19:02 (nineteen years ago)

my 2nd fave classic may be the first track from khaliflower...I think it's called x+y=fuck you?

I sold Crossdressers and Dante's Infernoland...there's good stuff in there but I needed the cash. Ripped to iTunes, of course.

My SCG completist coworker just picked up a Brothers Unconnected 2lp of a gig from Europe.

Trip Maker, Friday, 7 December 2012 22:03 (twelve years ago)

I still have to pick up Singles vol. 2. If for no other reason than to encourage Vol. 3 to happen (which presumably will have Eye Mohini and Borungku on it)

Tomb Of Spatula (Jon Lewis), Friday, 7 December 2012 22:09 (twelve years ago)

I was gonna revive a SCG thread to mention that Brothers Unconnected 2LP, it should be showing up in my mailbox any day now.

Singles 2 is, um... not as strong as Vol. 1. A couple of nice unreleased tracks though. STILL missing some of the "Three Fake Female Orgasms" 2x7", part of it was on Vol. 1.

sleeve, Friday, 7 December 2012 23:52 (twelve years ago)

three months pass...

Got Singles Vol. 3 yesterday-- the volume we've all been waiting for.

The material from the Eye Mohini and Borungku Si Derita singles is mastered from vinyl, which I guess isn't super surprising. And it's fine for the most part, except that the high lonesome singing on both of those title tracks fries up some serious sizzlin' bacon as a result. Which was also true of the vinyl rips I pulled off the web years ago but I was hoping not to hear it here. Mohini's B-side (an astonishing take of all-timer "Kal el Lazi Kad Ham") sounds great. There were three songs squeezed on the A-Side, maybe that's why it sounds so sizzly.

The original version of "Kickin' the Dragon" sounds FANTASTIC and not sourced from vinyl. The bonus live take of "The Flower" is amazing.

Jeff "Skink" Baxter (Jon Lewis), Monday, 1 April 2013 19:11 (twelve years ago)

I've been listening to vol.1. Real corker.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 1 April 2013 19:15 (twelve years ago)

If you can put up with certain idiosyncrasies, non-fans

xyzzzz__, Monday, 1 April 2013 19:16 (twelve years ago)

yeah both v1 and v3 are essential purchases. v3 as much so as Torch of the Mystics or 330,003 Crossdressers.

Jeff "Skink" Baxter (Jon Lewis), Monday, 1 April 2013 19:20 (twelve years ago)

I finally bit the bullet on the Brothers Unconnected 2 LP and boy was it worth it. If you attended any of these shows it's an amazing document and I consider it "essential" within the sprawling SCG canon as a snapshot of the very special atmosphere Rick & Alan brought to those shows. I've been playing it non-stop and I think it would even make a good intro to SCG.

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Tuesday, 2 April 2013 05:21 (twelve years ago)

It was an amazing show to be at, pretty goddamn emotional. I have the CD version they were selling at those dates: is the 2LP longer than that?

Jeff "Skink" Baxter (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 2 April 2013 15:30 (twelve years ago)

It is a recording of a show from the tour, I believe.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 15:42 (twelve years ago)

it's from a later tour (2011?) in Germany, and yeah it rules.

alvarius b version of "cooking with satan" FTW

flopson, Sunday, 30 June 2013 16:22 (eleven years ago)

Buy low, sell high
A centipede between the eyes
Looking hungry at the flock
Spill the blood, improve the stock

White trash riverboat Tom Sawyer
He tried to sue my voodoo lawyer
I held him up bringin' home his bacon
and I cooked it lean in the kitchen with Satan

And him and me with our brackish frowns
Dressin' down, sleaze broker town
We moved 'em out, we took 'em down
We're dressin' down with a cell phone
Answerin' calls, this cookin' pays
Gimme a call, 1-800-FUCKIN-A

I'll put you in a cardboard box
Slip you out into the rocks
Sit back and watch your momma pray
'Cause fuckin' maggot you're in the way

Buy low, sell high.....

flopson, Sunday, 30 June 2013 16:24 (eleven years ago)

most badass lyrics but the performance on the alvarius b version is so raw

flopson, Sunday, 30 June 2013 16:37 (eleven years ago)

Been listening to that singles vol 3 compi for the last week. Hadn't really heard how good the guitar was before. Maybe it's just more warped/sloppy on Torch of the Mystics?

Stevolende, Sunday, 30 June 2013 19:31 (eleven years ago)
