It's easy enough to remember the first few pop songs you loved, but how about instrumentals? Which records sans voice first carried you away?

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 7 April 2003 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

The first instrumental I loved was probably "Popcorn" by Hot Butter, probably around 1975. Still pretty funky. Imagine my joy when I came accros the original vinyl a few years ago.

Also, a few years later, "Bron Y Aur."

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 7 April 2003 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess "Wipeout" doesn't count?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 7 April 2003 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

"Axel F"?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 7 April 2003 02:00 (twenty-two years ago)

That would be "Nothing To Fear" by Depeche Mode. Possibly the best track on "A Broken Frame".

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 7 April 2003 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

ah i've got it. "Oxygene"!!!

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 7 April 2003 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Spike Jones "William Tell Overture"

(well, it DOES have the race track announcer on it but come on, it's an instrumental)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 7 April 2003 02:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Herb Albert's "Rise."

chrisbrei, Monday, 7 April 2003 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Herb is a good one. Used to come on the AM station my parents listened to all the time. Also: Chuck Mangione's "Feel So Good"

Hot Butter seconded
Frank Mills' "Music Box Dancer"
Tornadoes' "Telstar" (another one I'd hear through my parents' listening to oldies radio; it always made me feel weird, unsettled)
"Axel F" seconded
Jan Hammer "Miami Vice Theme" (LOVED this)

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 7 April 2003 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"Slaughter on Tenth Avenue," by the Ventures.

Krome & Time: "This is the Sound for the Underground"

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 7 April 2003 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

To be honest, I'd probably have to go back to Rush's "La Villa Stangiato" or "YYZ".

earlnash, Monday, 7 April 2003 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

"Wipe Out" is a likely candidate, but I'd never thought of it if Jody hadn't mentioned it.

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 7 April 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

They used to play that Santo & Johnny song at the end of the radio show that my mom would listen to when I was a wee lad, so that one.
