I'm a bit pissed off about this war shit. Like, what is the Canadian gov't doing, making sure that I'll never get a fucking US work visa again just so they can play politics for the benefit of some subsidised academic-CBC mafia or whoever? Is that their motivation? Cuz I can't figure out what else it could be. (Why would I want one anyway? Bigger variety of vacation spots! Warmer! Can indulge in DUI'ing while shooting holes in road signs! Stuff!) Also why is there SUCH a shitstorm over those '4' count-em FOUR friendly-fire casualties? Every single Canwebsite, [solemn voice] "We lost FOUR sons of the lickspittle Brit-empire loyalists, I mean potential SNL stars of the future" etc etc. More ppl than that get killed every day in BC getting drunk and going skiing! Since the dawn of everything it's been pretty much the same ratio of 1 death per person, die having an adventure defending democracy and oil & stuff as opposed to having your brain impaled via the eyeball by a gearstick or have somebody cough on you in Toronto, but even in war I suppose Americans and their scaredier Canadian cousins think they're immune from death and if it happens call a fuckin' lawyer.
The rest of the world doesn't think like this, you know. What would happen if the US Marines showed beaten Iraqi hostages on AL-Jazeera? Nothing, cuz life sucks over there anyway, like it does in the vast majority of Earth that's getting sick and tired of our shit. (It is also going to be very interesting when the vets come back. This war is starting to look like a John Zorn versh of Vietnam. Like, seriously ugly. I think everyone who knows ppl who are currently intimately involved in this thing should be keeping this in mind w/ view to sensitivity etc) Now everybody's gonna take their shot at the City on the Hill cuz the last one seemed to work, ie revealed to all the world that N. Americans have some mystical beliefs in the sanctity of their own existences. Like a CSNY song will be adapted for the nu-Canadian anthem. "Four dead - in a war too! - in Tora Bora". As national tragedies go that's hardly up there with fuckin' Hiroshima or the destruction of the peace-loving Aztecs or making it difficult for dave q to go wherever the fuck I want with a wrap of crystal meth glued to my nutsack which hasn't seen any soap in ages in order to throw off sniffer dogs and also cuz I'm a lazy filth pig.
Also, did I ever mention that Mike Reno comes from the same town as me? It's all true! And while I'm sure that generational-divide-aside he shared some formative experiences w/ myself I'm fairly certain it wasn't his ambition to be a fifth-rate Louis-Ferdinand Celine imitator. Who fuckin' knows tho, maybe it was

"Prissy Prissy" over "DOA"???

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 7 April 2003 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Same town as Reno? I pity thee Dave. Wonder if he is related to that Janet character.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 7 April 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm with your top three, Dave q, and I don't have anything but the first two albums but these guys are hard for me TOO excited about (or listen to ten songs in a row). I mean, it's not like I trashed them in my college newspaper and then changed my tastes, realized they had some decent songs, WENT FUCKING INSANE and declared it one of the best albums of all time. Like some people have.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 7 April 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

They were a case study in making a lot of seemingly-imperceptible decisions that later on their career (round about alb 3) turned out to be all the wrong ones, like making five hundred left turns only to find oneself in the only cul-de-sac on the whole route. (Ex. 1: kybd sounds adding a neat kinda new-wave feel? OK push the volume up just the tiniest notch, now it's unbearable and sounds like bad Genesis. Ex 2 - vocal attractively quavery? Push it just a LEETLE more, now it's whiny and obnoxious. Etc)

Prissy Prissy over Working For The Weekend? AIEEEE!!!!!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

SUNDAR MAKES THE FUNNIEST ILM POST EVER. Probably wouldn't translate well to the "Laugh..." thread on ILE, though. Oh well.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 02:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes Sean I saw what you did but I still think "It's Your Life" is 'kinda fun'!

nine years pass...

I just realized they're saying LIVE BAIT in "Notorious". I don't know why I always thought it was LIVE AID, because that made no sense.

three years pass...

The other day I was struck by how well arranged and performed Working for the Weekend is, so I listened to some other Loverboy hits. And they suck. Especially that Olympics theme and the duet with Ann Wilson. Every song seems like either the soundtrack to a lame fight scene in an 80's movie, or something that would roll over the final credits of an equally terrible 80s movie. They make Foreigner seem like Steely Dan.
