Velvet Underground covers S/D

The velvet undergroudn may/may not be the "most influential" (duck) band EVAH . . . but is it all in the delivery and the playing? WHat re the best and worst covers of Velvet Underground songs?

Johnney B (Johnney B), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I posted this on another thread last night:

(My fave Velvets cover ever is the version of "Femme Fatale" on Big Star's Third -- with whoever's drugged-out girlfriend on backing vox, singing off-key in French.)

(That song is a distillation of/metaphor for everything that's great about the album.)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

S: "Foggy Notion" Modern Lovers from Precise Modern Lovers Order, "The Lines You Amend" Sloan (not actually a cover, but sounds like I shoulda been on Loaded)
D: "White Light/White Heat" David Bowie

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Nirvana's cover of "Here She Comes Now" is so amazing it's ridiculous...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

nirvana´s cover of "here she comes now" is one of the worst...

arc-de-ciel, Monday, 7 April 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

The Dandy Warhols - (Tony This Song Is Called) Lou Weed.

Oh, what do you mean, it's not a cover?

kate, Monday, 7 April 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

S - Emiliani Torrini "Stephanie Says", she gets the lyrics wrong in a very cute Icelandic way.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I second Horace's nomination of The Modern Lovers' "Foggy Notion".

Search also...

"She's My Best Friend" by the Wedding Present
"There She Goes Again" by R.E.M
"Waiting for the Man" by Bauhaus with Nico -- live, shambolic performance punctuated by Nico sounding as if she's about to have a cerebral hemorhage.

Destroy....
"White Light White Heat" as bucthered by otherwise respectable NYC proto-hardcore band, Kraut.
....and didn't Billy Idol cover "Heroin"?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

d: "rock and roll" Jane's Addiction

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Nothing will ever beat Phish doing the entire "loaded" album on Halloween a few years ago. Incredible, even if you hate phish

Ben Silver (Ben Silver), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Search: Bowie's "Waiting for the Man," Cowboy Junkies' "Sweet Jane," REM's "Pale Blue Eyes," Apoptygma Berserk's "All Tomorrow's Parties."

I've always wanted Leonard Cohen to do a Velvets cover, but alas.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

As I recall, Lou Reed endorsed Cowboy Junkies' "Sweet Jane" as the best VU cover ever -- but maybe he was just trying to get a date with Margo Timmins, I don't know. I'm partial to the version of "I'll Be Your Mirror" that John Doe and Jennifer Jason Leigh did in "Georgia."

Jesse Fox (Jesse Fox), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

And Billy Idol did cover "Heroin," according to The Covers Project (I haven't heard it).

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I wanna say it's on the CyberPunk album, but I could be mistaken.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Mott the Hoople's version of "Sweet Jane" is fantastic.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Speaking of Lou, I got tix to see him on the 22nd at Bowery Ballroom. Woo-hoo! (although I have this suspicion he won't be as good as Moe Tucker was when I saw her last year -- she ended with a fucking amazing 10-minute rip through "Bo Diddley")

Jesse Fox Mayshark (Jesse Fox), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

S: Rainy Day "I'll Be Your Mirror," 800 Cherries "Here She Comes Now,"
Joy Division "Sister Ray"

D: Billy Idol, "Heroin" (as bad as you can imagine)

mike a (mike a), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

there is a morning becomes eclectic show (kcrw, you can check out the online archives) where pavement do "what goes on." it's really awesome.

marcg (marcg), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Also S: The Feelies, "What Goes On."

mike a (mike a), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Jonathan Richman has a track/loving ode to the Velvets on I, Jonathan called "Velvet Underground," wherein he suddenly breaks into "Sister Ray" halfway in. It's brilliant. Go fetch.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Also S: The Feelies, "What Goes On."

yes

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

s - Marisa Monte "Pale Blue Eyes"
d - R.E.M. "Pale Blue Eyes"

Moe Tucker's Bo Diddley covers are fantastic

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

The Covers Project only lists one cover of "The Gift," by Beatle Hans, which is a shame. If I had any musical ability and/or a band, I think that's the first thing I'd jump on.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

when I was 14 and 15 (92-93), living in Saskatoon, it seemed like every local band did a Velvets cover at all-ages shows.
Needlebridge did a wicked "What Goes On"
the Drowned did a few, "Heroin" "Here She Comes Now" and probably others
and this weirdo band called I Am Joe's Lung did "Sweet Jane" I think.

local bands today don't do this, partly because there's not as much of a "shared heritage" which has its own set of pros and cons.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

surprise surprise, I second Alex's Jojo Velvets, on a similar tip check out his amazing "Monologue About Bermuda" on Having A Party with Jonathan Richman.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

motorcycle boy - run run run. i love the sexy velvety voice of the singer.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah... SEARCH: Cabaret Voltiare's "Here She Comes Now"

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the covers project page is a little flawed, though. I typed in Robert Johnson, and apparently he covered Paradise City by Guns 'n' Roses!

Shocking.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

S: Pulnoc - "All Tomorrow's Parties," Swervedriver - "Jesus," Jackie Leven - "Pale Blue Eyes", Galaxie 500 - "Here She Comes Now," Psychic TV - "Candy Says," The Soft Boys - "Train Round the Bend"

D: Rainy Day's twee "I'll Be Your Mirror," Fatima Mansions' ill-advised "Lady Godiva's Operation"

summerslastsound (summerslastsound), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Undecided: Alejandro Escovedo's "Pale Blue Eyes"

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 7 April 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

But I LIKE the "twee" version of "I'll Be Your Mirror!" I actually heard the Rainy Day version before the VU version. (This would have been in the mid-80s, when VU records were still near-mythical and every two-bit group from Athens, Mpls and LA was covering their songs.)

In the same vein: Tracey Thorn's "Femme Fatale" from _A Distant Shore_.

mike a (mike a), Monday, 7 April 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I love Yo La Tengo's "I'm Set Free" (found on Genius + Love)

I have to second (*or third*) Big Star

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Monday, 7 April 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

S: Detroit featuring Mitch Ryder - "Rock and Roll" (can't believe no one mentioned this; guess you had to grow up in Michigan).
Patti Smith - "We're Gonna Have a Real Good Time Together"
The whole Rock and Roll Animal lp

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 7 April 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Was it my imagination or did Patti Smith do a version of "Pale Blue Eyes" as well? Cause I think that may have been the first version of the song that I ever heard...

kate, Monday, 7 April 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes she did! It's on a bunch of live boots (along with "We're Gonna Have a Real Good Time Together").

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 7 April 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Search: R.E.M.'s 45 of "There She Goes Again," which feature their best production ever; and Jonathan Richman's "Sister Ray" interpolation.

Destroy: everything on Lou's Rock 'n' Roll Animal.

Burr (Burr), Monday, 7 April 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Nig-Heist, "If She Ever Comes" (sic)

Sam J. (samjeff), Monday, 7 April 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

"Fireball" by Ducks Deluxe. I shit you not. It's like "Sweet Jane" set free.

Also no Bettie Serveet mentions at all!? The covers album is pretty fantastic for about four of the tracks at least. Not to mention Cat Power's K-brill cover of "I Found A Reason"

The joy division cover of Sister Ray bites though -- sound quality makes it virtually unlistenable.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 7 April 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

there is a morning becomes eclectic show (kcrw, you can check out the online archives) where pavement do "what goes on." it's really awesome. -- marcg

Thanks for tipping me off to that - what a great show! See, I wish they had been like that the few times I saw them live - playing made-up songs about sports teams, VU covers, b-sides, joking around... Instead, I just heard "Shady Lane."

I like how they play an impromptu song they say is called "neil hagerty meets jon spencer in a non-alcoholic bar blowout" or something, and Tricia Halloran is like, "Now, what was that called again? 'Neil Hagerty Meets...'? Is that something you've been playing for a while, or...?"

Of course, she's also so nervous she says "Spiral Stars."

Sam J. (samjeff), Monday, 7 April 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, they also play Faust's "It's a Rainy Day, Sunshine Girl."

Sam J. (samjeff), Monday, 7 April 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

search:
telescopes version of 'candy says'
vanessa paradis'(!) version of 'i'm waiting for the man' (she also does 'walk on the wild side' on the same single, 'sunday mondays' from 1992, her kravitz phase)

(jonathan richman's 'velvet undergound' is great too - 'they played less notes and left more space' is a great line)

Spiritualized "Why Don't You Smile Now"

I can't believe Kate hasn't piped in about this one already...

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 7 April 2003 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

destroy all versions of "pale blue eyes"

search: rowland s howard's version of "i'm set free" (he also did a fantastic version of l. reed's "oh jim")

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 7 April 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

also destroy all versions of "femme fatale"

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 7 April 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Uncle Kraker's "In A Little While" blatantly rips off Sweet Jane's chords and even has a "some people...other people..." verse. Though the chorus confuses me (but you're thinking about her now, Uncle!) I think it's a damn fine song and a hell of a lot better than "Follow Me."

But, Jim, the big star version?!?!?!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 7 April 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

ugh that's one of the ones i had in mind! the stupid female backing vocals! urrrrrgh

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 7 April 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

there could be a whole separate thread on Sweet Jane soundalikes.
dig "felonious" on the new Howe Gelb solo disc where "the piano is stealing lou reed licks, licks he probably stole"

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

don lennon's 'john cale' is v. good.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

you know what! I never got that those were FEMALE back-up vocals. I just thought Chilton had double tracked his voice.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Drop City's cover of "Why Don't You Smile Now?"
Nick Cave's overly dramatic cover of "All Tomorrow's Parties"

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

D. Joy Division Sister Ray
S. New Order Sister Ray (not the one on the BBC Radio live album, but the completely different sounding one recorded live in Rio, 1988 - featuring some of the best Bernard Sumner guitar ever (which is saying a whole lot).

scott b, Thursday, 22 April 2010 13:30 (fifteen years ago)

Bryan Ferry, What Goes On

... which incorporated bits of "Beginning to See the Light", it was a single and he performed it on Top of the Pops!

Is that your Ayrshire bacon? (Tom D.), Thursday, 22 April 2010 13:39 (fifteen years ago)

One of those "Knew that one before I knew the VU", that Ferry cover.

The other one being the "Sister Ray" Joy Division.

Mark G, Thursday, 22 April 2010 13:51 (fifteen years ago)

Pretty sure some 50s/ early 60s rocker type, making a comeback in the 70s, did a cover version of "Rock 'n' Roll" - could it be Gary US Bonds?

Is that your Ayrshire bacon? (Tom D.), Thursday, 22 April 2010 13:53 (fifteen years ago)

Paul Haig & Edwyn Collins' "Pale Blue Eyes" was pretty fabulous

bham, Thursday, 22 April 2010 14:12 (fifteen years ago)

No mention of Subway Sect's "Head Held High" yet!??!?! One of the best!

Is that your Ayrshire bacon? (Tom D.), Thursday, 22 April 2010 14:17 (fifteen years ago)

never heard the new order version -- is this Rio 1988 "Sister Ray" you speak of on bootleg? Or ...?

tylerw, Thursday, 22 April 2010 14:35 (fifteen years ago)

no, it was officially released on this album: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Like-Girl-Want-Keep-Coming/dp/B0000083J6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1271950247&sr=1-1

(excellent sound quality, and a faster version than on the Radio 1 album.)

scott b, Thursday, 22 April 2010 15:33 (fifteen years ago)

First Moe Tucker album has an amazing version of "Heroin".

Adam Bruneau, Thursday, 22 April 2010 15:44 (fifteen years ago)

Moderately fond of Half Japanese's cover of "I Heard Her Call My Name."

Kind of curious if anyone has ever covered anything from Squeeze?

dlp9001, Thursday, 22 April 2010 17:40 (fifteen years ago)

Pretty sure some 50s/ early 60s rocker type, making a comeback in the 70s, did a cover version of "Rock 'n' Roll"

Mitch Ryder, already mentioned upthread.

Spikey, Tuesday, 19 October 2010 04:58 (fourteen years ago)

Lots of mentions of various REM covers but my favorite is their version of "After Hours," with which they used to close every show.

Refrigerator's "Lonesome Surprise" is more or less a cover of "Oh! Sweet Nuthin" and is great.

D: "Femme Fatale," Duran Duran.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 19 October 2010 05:47 (fourteen years ago)

This is great. Used to be on the Largo website, but can't find it anymore.

This cover album is kind of knocking me out on a number of levels. Interesting song choices (stuff from Squeeze, Chelsea Girls, etc.) and an approach that's neither schtick nor reverent. The fact that it's female sung with a foreign but non-German accent puts a neat spin on things. It walks a really fine line, and I'd be surprised if there's another single-artist album like this that's better...

http://open.spotify.com/album/4HpQ89feMK2mwfAKOcyGax

Oh, and this Canadian band's cover of WL/WH I may like more than the original, at least for the moment. Sounds a bit like 18th Dye with a French accent:

I don't know why I remember it - they were written up in some issue of SPIN as a hot, up and coming thing in some issue circa '90 or '91. part of the Black Rock Coalition. I bought the album and it was terrible. The Venus in Furs cover was its big selling point.

There appears to be next to no information about this band on the web, after a little googling.

Waiting for something I ordered online called The Warrior Heart of the Velvet Underground, a double-CD of Japanese covers. That will bring me up to 21 tribute albums--20 more or less legitimate, plus a bootleg of the Feelies at Maxwell's in 1983--and I assumed that was the end of the road. But yesterday I found this really cheap downtown:

http://i1.sndcdn.com/artworks-000005468343-kcj0d5-crop.jpg?3eddc42

Didn't know this existed--live covers recorded between '77-'81 by a Toronto quasi-punk band. (I have their one album that turns up everywhere, but don't remember what it's like--more new wave than punk, I think.) So maybe there's still more out there, it's hard to know.
