Band art/logos/insignia that would be worthy of having as tattoos.

I'm far too old and practical (read: wussy) to ever get a tattoo (not that they're really anything especially radical or different anymore...but I digree), but if I did....and I was ill-advised enough to select some band iconography to permanently scar myself with, I think the following would make for some truly boffo tattoos.

I know 5 people with this tattoo'd on themselves (and, if I ever get a tattoo, it'll prob'ly be this):

I always dug Rollins' "Der Tanzen Mensch" logo.

They have a special charity where I live that does nothing but remove Black Flag and WAR tatoos from young adults so they can get jobs

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Monday, 7 April 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i like the HIM logo (the heartagram) but would never tattoo it on myself, not being a big fan of HIM, Bam Margera, or Satan. But it is a cool logo.

Seriously, there was a time in my life where I contemplated getting this (er, without the text of course). But that time has passed. Still, even if I wouldn't get it now, I think if I had gotten it I wouldn't necessarily be sitting here regretting the decision.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 7 April 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

A band here in Vancouver changed their name from Jar to Brundlefly, For the first album release with the new name, they hired a tattoo artist who would, for free, change people's 'Jar' tattoos to read 'Brundlefly'. A clever promotion, though I heard no word on whether anyone took up the offer.

derrick (derrick), Monday, 7 April 2003 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Getting tattooed when yr old and practical: classic! I already have too many, not that it stops me, but I almost got a peppermint candy tattooed on my foot, so I was almost the world's biggest White Stripes fan by accident.

Erm, just so no one thinks that I'm totally weak, I've been forever trying to find something that will work to cover a freckle right in the middle of my left foot, because it really pisses me off, it looks like the goddamned stigmata. Who the hell has a freckle right in the middle of their foot? But the peppermint idea was extrodinarily short lived, cos I hate that candy.

So suggestions for small things I can put on top of my foot can be sent to my email.

I've always thought this

would be a cool tat, but it sounds kind of elaborate for what you're looking for.

"Down" has a tough font, a fluer-de-leis and "Nola" in a stylish font. Plus "Nola" is a pretty sexy name too.

The Misfits reaper, though not uncommon on punks, is tough as hell and artful. Danzig-related tatoos= DO NOT FUCK WITH.

http://www.dustygroove.com/images/products/skullsnaps~_skullsnap_101b.jpg

It takes a true head/hipster to get this ink. That is the legendary funk outfit Skull Snaps on their rare LP. Very ill name, very ill artwork.

Cub, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 05:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Skulls are awesome. If I was a combat paratrooper in the French Foreign Legion, no doubt I would have tatoos of skulls, daggers, demon's talons, wildcats, and nekkid ladies.

Someday I will actually get this... honest...

kate, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 08:01 (twenty-two years ago)

(Except just to be contrary I'd probably replace the "3" with a "22")

kate, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 08:11 (twenty-two years ago)

wow! that's the very design i've been meaning to get for the last eight years...

wanna get married?

marquis de suave, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 08:17 (twenty-two years ago)

At one point, I seriously considered getting the Dead Kennedys DK logo.

Joel, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 08:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Only if hstencil believes in polygamy... ;-)

kate, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 08:21 (twenty-two years ago)

and from this side too!

marquis de suave, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 08:26 (twenty-two years ago)

That Sugarcubes image looks decidedly very metal. Kind of odd considering the band it seeks to pay tribute to.

I ALMOST had this tattooed on my ankle in college. Yes, I was THAT big of a stupid asshole. (cue rest of ILM: "What do you mean 'was'?)

Also toyed with the icon in the middle of this....

I have a band art/logo/insignia tattoo. I can't find it online anywhere, and I'm kinda afraid to admit what it is...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Lemme guess, is it the digital wolf from the cover of Jefferson Starship's Winds of Change album?

That'd be RAD!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Here in Norway it was really popular for a while to get this little tribalthingy that Motorpsycho used on some of their artwork.
You can see it on the top-leftof this picture:
http://motorpsycho.fix.no/mpsycho/thisis/pictures/knoot/rutcovera.jpg
It seemed like every second Norwegian student that got a tattoo in the mid90s, got that one.

Personally, I guess the one I'd like to get is the Magma-thingy, as, like the Motorpsycho one, it's something recognizable, yet with more to it than being pure fanboy crap. IE it's something that I can still gladly wear, even if I'd get sick of the band and Vander were to kick me in the balls or something.

Putting a band's name on just seems like a terrible idea to me.

Oh yeah, the Magma thing:

The banana w/ Andy Warhol signature.

matt riedl (veal), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Yanc3y, I didn't know you had a tattoo. WHY DO YOU NOT SHARE WITH ME? I am upset and my mood is darkened.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Cuz it's dorky and I'm embarrassed about it (it's Gang of Four related).

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Really? That sounds good!.....unless it's that pyramid from the cover of the Mall album. That would be bad.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

It's the symbol for Infinite Zero. I thought the label was only related to GoF (I didn't realize it was a Rollins thing), but it isn't. So now I'm walking around with Henry's mark on my back.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

(when my stepmother, who was once a huge Gang of Four fan, saw it, she screamed, "YOU LITTLE SHIT!")

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

HAHA Yanc3y, why be embarassed, it's a great tattoo. I almost got the fucking Useless Generation tattoo done up one night, taking faux-socialist sides, GoF versus the Manics.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno. I kinda regret it. Two of my best friends were going to get tattoos (one of them a fucking Jawbreaker symbol -- thank God I'm not him!), and I agreed to go along. I said I wasn't gonna get one, but just in case I decided to bring $200 and a copy of the symbol. I'm lame.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha "just in case." Please don't ever go with me anywhere otherwise you'll be covered in 40 tattoos. "Right, well, I was just going with JD to see her get her tongue pierced, and it just seemed fair that I got a huge celtic knot put on my neck, it was definitely apropos of nothing, I swear, mom."

I don't think so many musicfans would want that, but I can imagine lots of us nerds eventually getting tattoos of stuff like "REMOTE LINKING FORBIDDEN", "Syntax Error", "404" etc.
I'm sure there must be people out there who have the Linux penguin somewhere on their body.

Ohh, I thought of one more. A Residents-style eyeball with a tophat! Yay!

None of my 5 are band related, nor will any I get in the future. Stupid thing to do.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Stupid thing to do.

OF COURSE it's a stupid thing to do. Who was debating that?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

If it wasn't stupid, it wouldn't be funny.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

My body is a cruel joke!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)
