The Junos, or the sickly-sweet stench of panicky Canadian self-affirmation

Anyone watch these? I couldn't bear it, even after 8 months of heavy promotion, or whatever it was.

Apparently Chad Kroeger boasted about how he likes to "break the rules." I will never get over missing that wonderful moment.

slutsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Also the Genies suck.

And how 'bout those Gemini Awards? Every Canadian TV show on the air seems to have won about 754 of those.

slutsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

VCR came in very handy. Watched the whole thing in about 15 minutes--seriously! Only 2 comments: It seemed like they gave away about six or seven awards tops (am I wrong?); Shania looks better in a Ramones t-shirt.

s woods, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

the Junos are always a good way to find what was cool three years ago. like Swollen Members winning best rap recording over K-OS, fucking bullshit.
that's actually the only category that I was rooting for someone in. all the rest, fuck 'em, but K-OS is amazing and this is just one more reason why I want to burn the mall down.

I didn't watch it, but in the paper today they had a photo of Shania in some tricked out Habs outfit with her grody thong straps showing. It's really disgusting. I was glad I was sitting down.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Seriously, Horace, K-OS is hardly "amazing"--he's okay, though sure, still a thousand times better than Swollen Members.

s woods, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

okay, 50% of EXIT is really amazing, maybe 45%. there is some crap on there, but the stuff that works is really, uh, not mind-blowing, but the best rap out of Canada. And from what I've seen, if he does a second album he's probably going to move away from the stuff that I like.
But man, Swollen Members are plaaaaaaayed out.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Next year this mutha will be dominated by I MOTHER EARTH. I mean, how can they not storm the planet with an album titled The Quicksilver Meat Dream????

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

that reminds me of a letter I wrote to Penthouse Forum one time...

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, just looking at that title now makes me wanna line up at the store right now so I can get it tomorrow morning! WITH A TITLE LIKE THAT IT'S GOTTA BE GOOD!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

The Quicksilver Meat Dream

!!!!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Midnight tonight, baby. (I assume all the stores are staying open late to sell this, no?)

s woods, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 01:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh, Jody, that wasn't in response to you! (Just to be clear about that...)

s woods, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 01:00 (twenty-two years ago)

understood.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Who in their right mind would stay open late to sell THAT?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Er, maybe the band's official website? Maybe one of their parents owns a Mac's Milk? Surely someone out there cares....

s woods, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyhoo,
I didn't even bother watching the Junos.
Complete lack of interest for the bulk of the televised categories and the collective nominees.
That being said, I was glad Broken Social Scene picked up an award.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Me too--my best friend produced that sucker!

s woods, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I wouldn't have been disappointed to see Royal City win either. I think my ex-roommate recorded that one.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

s woods - your best friend is mr newfeld? wow wow. give him mad props to me... i only managed to fit him into my review twice, but he deserved even more credit. that record's production was 50% of its awesomeness. really, really, really well done.

Sean@tangmonkey (Sean M), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

What award did BSS win? I just saw them in Victoria, BC, and I wrote a review of their last album for Flak [link is to the mag, not the review, which should go live this week.]

Sean, there are some eerie similarities surrounding our superficially very different reviews: we both bemoan how wilfully obscure the record is (for different reasons).

Plus, now I feel guilty for not giving Dave Newfeld the props he deserves.

David A. (Davant), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

BSS won for best alternative album, beating Royal City, Buck 65, Hot Hot Heat and some band I can't remember.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

and The New Deal, which I thought was released in 2001.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Junos to there credit have nailed the Best Alternative Album several years in a row at one point. Hell even CMJ in its commercial glory of now days stopped in its tracks to congratulate Julie Dorion and The Wooden Stars when they beat Len and the rest of the Sonic Unyon crowd.

Royal City and Broken Social Scene? Must be Alternative Album of the year. And hurrah for Dave's production work.

And yup Bruce confirmed it, if Hot Hot Heat had won I would have fucking sued my country. All those other albums are indeed excellent. I believe New Deal might have gotten an early 2002 reissue by Zomba, but I can't remeber, I was studing computers back then.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I would have picked the Constantines over Rufus Wainwright last year, but I have a bias.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Royal City's Alone at the Microphone was a late 2001 release.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, and it's way cool. way cooler than BSS.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

So that makes two 2001 albums up for this year's alternative album Juno.
Banner year, that 2001

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the Juno year cycle is not Jan 1 to Dec 31.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

y'know, the metric system and all

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I was glad Bramwell Tovey's Requiem For a Charred Skull won for classical composition.

Avril Lavigne was so cool in her performance.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Alone at the Microphone I think would be December then. I'd ask the wonderful folks at Three Gut Records but Im scared they'd dump more red wine on me.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Noodles, do you anything about Cuff The Duke?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Leslie “POLLS” Hartley (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 25 March 2018 22:20 (seven years ago)

One of the Stampeders? Gino Vanelli?

clemenza, Sunday, 25 March 2018 22:29 (seven years ago)

This felt similar to a hockey game - all the ad breaks with announcements telling you to have a good time etc. And a similar crowd endlessly milling around, just wearing different clothes. Geddy Lee was nice even though he had to praise the BNLs. I saw an epic Rush gig at this venue about 20 years ago. But it's hard to not be cynical about the rest. It's so square. And what's with Michael Buble? Does he have "issues"? He was barely there but maybe they were trying to keep him off the stage since he sucked the energy like a fuckin black hole everytime the mic was near his mouth.

Grimes did a pretty poor talky bit and should've come back out to join Jann Arden etc in the "If I Had A Million Dollars" singalong at the end imo.

what a disaster when the host said "is he here?" when grimes won the award

tinnitus the night (Ross), Monday, 26 March 2018 23:20 (seven years ago)

the pathos of the juno awards - imagine if the grammys were worse because canadian -is quite significant

Louis Jägermeister (jim in vancouver), Monday, 26 March 2018 23:29 (seven years ago)

I think on some intellectual level I like the idea of the Junos more than the idea of the Grammys. They seem so classically Canadian: named after an anglicization of a high-ranking French Canadian public servant, with equity provisions for selecting judges, and several major categories decided strictly by the objective measure of sales figures. I don't watch either, though.
