Hi, My band sucks but I scored a lucrative recording contract because my big brother's band is successful.

recent examples of this:
Adema - John Davis from Korn's step brother
Audiovent - Incubus' Mikey and Brandon's little brothers

are there any others? does the nepatism ever produce bands BETTER then their kin? (this does not extend just to little brothers)

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

bands with siblings in them suck.
the only good musicians ever have either been only childses or their sibs died at birth.

ofcoursei'mlying

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Unbelievable Truth (who I actually rather like)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesse Garon and the Desperadoes were pretty good.

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

was that the band with Steve Stamos?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaron Carter.

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

rollerskate skinny (who also don't suck, oh well)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

TELL ME WHO THESE BANDS ARE RELATED TO PLEASE

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

unbelievable truth = thom yorke's brother
rollerskate skinny = kevin shields' brother (only up to their first album)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

rollerskate skinny = kevin shields' brother (only up to their first album)

Then what? Did he become Kevin Shields' sister?

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Powerman 5000 is rob zombie's bro, no?

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

the only reason CKY have a deal is because of Bam Margera and Jackass. And Bam is his LITTLE brother.

Sister Vanilla (the sister Reid) was pretty ok.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 01:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, Teeny. Nu metal ownz this thread so far.

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

does the nepatism ever produce bands BETTER then their kin?

Look out for The Red Sun Band, a boy-girl two-hander featuring, uh, Patrick from The Vines' little brother and his girlfriend. They're fucking amazing shoegazefeedbackamazingfemalevoxcocteausinhellcatharticmadness.

Honestly.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Kelley Deal's band, the Breeders, only got a record deal because of her sister Kim, who's in the Breeders.

Nick Mirov (nick), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

same with Liam Gallagher

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, oasis is the perfect answer.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought the Lennon clan would own this thread (nepotism in general, not the brother thing). And take Mike McGear and Simon Townsend while you're at it, though I've never heard them.

nickn (nickn), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Horace Mann, shame on you, aren't you a NoMeansNo fan?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Uuuuhhhh... does anyone remember the name of Russell Kilbey's (brother of Steve Kilbey from The Church) band? I want to say the Crystal Set but I might be confusing them with the Crystal Method.

Well, they were quite good!

kate, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 07:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Danii Minogue, though I'm using the word 'brother' in the loosest sense here!!

Kim Tortoise, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 09:11 (twenty-two years ago)

.......and the word 'band' come to think of it.

Kim Tortoise, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Good thing Chris Jagger was a "photographer" not a rock star. ;-)

kate, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The Sugarplastic had Josh Laner on drums, the brother of Brad Laner (Medicine, Electric Company). Both bands released two good albums before things went sour.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Do the Wallflowers fit into this scenario?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

If Brassy sucked, I'd mention them. They don't, but I am nonetheless. BTW...

Brassy = Muffin Spencer, little sister of...
JSBX = Jon Spencer

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

One of the rock bands that formed at my university was fronted by a brother of one of the blues travelers, so they were sort of blues cousins I guess, and got all this intense hand-me-down equipment and technically could have blown anyone of the stage with their PA and Mesa/Boogies and Trace/Eliots and whatnot but they just sort of mellowly funk/punked along, like a better-looking Anthony Keidis fronting the Dave Matthews band. Awful. I saw the guy again and he says he's getting into acting.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and they did get a recording contract or two but I doubt any of it was very lucrative for anyone involved.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

The Van Zant family of Jacksonville, FL owns this thread.

TMFTML (TMFTML), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I was just gonna bring up Brassy. They are good. I don't think they trade on the Spencer that much though (certainly not as much as bro jon does, y'know naming the band after himself)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

++Kelley Deal's band, the Breeders, only got a record deal because of her sister Kim, who's in the Breeders.

wrong. the breeders were started by kim deal and tanya d .(of throwing muses fame)
maybe you are thinking of the amps?

kephm, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone remember Frank Stallone?

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

tanya d. only got a record deal becuz of chuck d.

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Jermaine, Janet, LaToya...

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

anyone NOT remember Frank Stallone?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Jermaine probably scored his deal fairly legit - he wasn't as big a factor in the Jackson Five as Michael, but he was a definite factor. He had a few solo hits also. Janet and LaToya clearly got their deals because of Thriller though - A&M were lucky as hell Janet hooked up with Jam & Lewis.

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

So who's that little fucker that got a rekkid contract 'cause his brother is a Backstreet Boy? What's his name?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Marky Mark

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Joey Ramone's brother's band were never much cop.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Don Swayze!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Don Swayze is Joey Ramone's brother?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

roger adultery, CKY has some good songs though... easy to make a point about the connection but CKY (band/video project) existed prior to Jackass.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

oh and to adress the question: stella parton

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

but she's actually not bad...

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

bands with siblings in them suck.

Horace, you hate Cowboy Junkies as well then? Had three Timmins at the start. Even if they're not, Matt Murhpy (Superfriendz, Flashing Lights) and Chris Murphy (sloan) should be brothers.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

but she's actually not bad...
I read this as but she's actually not BALD...
which sort of mystified and aroused me simultaneously

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

crowded house. well, they don't hardly suck.
and little finn is probably better than big finn, even if he did hijack the band.

aaron carter's brother is in bsb.
marky mark's brother was a new kid. and after donnie helped marky score a record deal, marky helped donnie score an acting career, or so it seems....

bucky wunderlick (bucky), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

talentless nepotism in action, ladies and gentlemen.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

What was the name of the 'horrorcore' group that Russel Simmon's brother was in?

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Run DMC?

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah. Maybe it was his cousin.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Janet Jackson?

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

_The Many Moods of Murry Wilson_ is an example of this principle working backwards (although I guess Murry sold a song or two before his kids became stars).

mike a (mike a), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

you're thinking of the gravediggaz, no?

bucky wunderlick (bucky), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Del Tha Funkee Homosapien (Ice Cube's cuz)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

nope, not gravediggaz. From what I've heard, they were a Gravediggaz knock-off.

Del seems to be the only one mentioned who is as good as, if not better than, their 'connection'

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

So who's that little fucker that got a rekkid contract 'cause his brother is a Backstreet Boy? What's his name?

Aaron Carter. I mentioned him waaaay upthread.

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Del, as opposed to his cousin Ice Cube, actually still makes rekkids.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

cuz he loves da kids

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it Warren G who's Dr. Dre's cousin? Or am I thinking of someone else?

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Dre is Warren's stepbrother

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

B*withched!

chris (chris), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

North Mississippi Allstars

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate, you're right that The Crystal Set was a Kilbey brother. They were a bit of a laughing stock in Australia for a while. But they didn't fare as badly as another Kilbey brother and his rubbish combo the Bhagavad Guitars, who really do suck.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

the Bhagavad Guitars

They deserve to die for the shit name alone. They sound like they should come from Canada < / stereotype >.
