Hi, My name is Lisa Marie Presley, and i dont realize these things...

I can't sing.
The production on my album is really bad.
Putting refrences to Scientology in my songs probably won't help me sell any records.
My album is going to tank.

Who green lights these things?

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

you have to admit, just from a label perspective, you gotta figure it's worth a shot. instant publicity and bankable name (and big tell-all interview potential). and if it tanks, it tanks spectacularly at least.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

musical equivalent of Battlefield Earth

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Al thats what im trying to figure out. its obviously going to be a financial failure and its not like LMP is the most stable of people. i find the whole thing mildly cruel.

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i thingk its funnny.

funny weird not funny ha ha.

"Im not sexy when they dress me up like Avril and i look at the camera like im half asleep.

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

All that instant publicity and a bankable name didn't help Kelly Osborne or Sean Lennon much did it?

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe not, but I quite enjoy Kelly's album.

paul cox (paul cox), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Plus, maybe those millions of Elvis fanatics will pick up the album as so not to offend The King's restless spirit.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

AMG gave it four stars.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Got Sean a place on the Core CMJ at least didnt it? Thats gotta mean at least 5000 copies in the states right???

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I think she sings just fine on that single. Of course, she sounds like Cher, so I would say that.

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, it keeps seguing into "The Night the Lights Went out in Georgia" in my head, and I like that, too.

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

'Putting refrences to Scientology in my songs probably won't help me sell any records'

Well-uh well-uh well-uh HUH!

dave q, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Heard Lisa Marie's single yesterday. It's pretty wierd actually; enough so that I can see it potentially growing on me. Neat Ballard production and far less annoying than the stuff he did with Alanis Morrisette. Towards the end of the track Lisa Marie starts growling.

theodore fogelsanger, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

The video is weird, she adopts this crouching position and then the camera spins around and around while she sort of bounces up and down gradually regaining an upright posture.

Take it away Dan.

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel so dirty that even knowing full well that she fucked Michael Jackson I still find her totally babe-o-riffic.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, she's totally hot.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Why should she worry whether the record tanks? Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. had approx. $34 MN in profit last year.

hstencil, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel so dirty that even knowing full well that she fucked Michael Jackson I still find her totally babe-o-riffic.
Where's the evidence that THAT ever happened, though?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

She obviously feels she needs to prove something to somebody though. I mean, three horribly failed marriages and a grotesquely huge shadow over her.(by which I mean, y'know, those Naked Gun movies her mom was in)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I retract the previous statement because it is soooo wrong on so many levels.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

How, indeed, CAN something so wrong turn out to be so right?

Yeah, they won't help old ladies across the street without sneakily connecting those personality tester machines to the old ladies wig.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 01:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, god...it just dawned on me! If they (Lisa-Marie and Michael) had kids, these kids would've been raised as both Scientologists and Jehovahs Witnesses.
"Hello, Neighbor...would you like an E-Meter test? How about a copy of the Watchtower."

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Doesn't it seem rather LATE for her to be launching a music career now?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

LMP doesn't realize that Toronto isn't Asia.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

It will be a camp-classic in 15 years. Still waiting for Eddie Murphy's record to get its second wind. (tick tock - any day now.)

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Hasn't that one gone through the "critical reappraisal phase" already...and was still found to be lacking.
Actually, the albums I'm expecting to gain massive cult classic status in retrospect are:
"No More Mister Nice Guy" by Pat Boone
"In the Life of Chris Gaines" by Garth Brooks

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Sunday, 1 June 2003 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, she is hawt. it would probably be bad form to discuss the doppelganger issue.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 1 June 2003 04:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't find her attractive in the slightest. There was a decent review of her album in the back of The Oxford American this month. The reviewer said basically, she vamps it up too much, to the point where there's not enough variation in tone.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 9 April 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

who buys these kind of things?

the kind of people that buy the last william shatner record, but aren't too bothered about whether its wackyness is signposted enough for their friends to be in on it.

or, confident self-assured people?

charltonlido (gareth), Saturday, 9 April 2005 12:29 (twenty years ago)

You know a song is pretty bad when I get outraged at how badly she mangled it compared to Don Henley!

Leon WK (Ex Leon), Saturday, 9 April 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

I'm waiting for all those solo singles to get covers after the Ataris and now this. Who does "Sunset Grill" and "All She Wants To Do Is Dance"?

Rushed to hospital after suffering cardiac arrest, apparently. Does not look well in the recent photos.

A friend on Facebook said that, while there are lots of famous people known only by their first name, she might have been the only child of a famous person who was known by her first name. Don't know if that's true, but Lisa-Marie only brings one person to mind for me.

Vexatious litigant (morrisp), Friday, 13 January 2023 02:57 (two years ago)

She and her band did a solid, seemingly unbroken hour under the lights on Soundstage long ago, commanding my attention all the way through. Seems like all the studio tracks I've heard, prob including some feasted on by Old Ilx above, were pretty good too---

Letterman's YouTube channel uploaded her interview on his show. It's really striking how much of her father can be seen in her - not only the physical details in her face, but even in the mannerisms and the smile. She mentions needing to keep certain memories of her father to herself, and in light of her death, it brings to mind one of the most poignant aspects of Elaine May's Mikey and Nicky.

Can relate to the keeping some memories to/for yourself. Also always think about that one Emmylou Harris quote about Gram Parsons.

Yeah, absolutely. FWIW, when Loretta Lynn died recently, Jack White said something similar in his remembrance.

Bought Storm & Grace, her third and last album, at a garage sale yesterday for a dollar. I'd never heard her before--the copy was unopened, and I saw the T-Bone Burnett producer's credit, so why not. Not quite through the whole thing, but some of it is surprisingly good.

clemenza, Sunday, 15 June 2025 17:56 (five months ago)

Favourite song on the album--love this!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_DBknS6RZ4

clemenza, Monday, 16 June 2025 16:00 (five months ago)

All of her tracks that I've heard seemed good---except maybe a very early guest duet w Malcolm McLaren, can't quite remember---and was very impressed by her and band on Chicago Public TV's Soundstage: 50-odd minutes of seemingly non-stop music, no show of effort or mastery, just doing it.

dow, Monday, 16 June 2025 19:33 (five months ago)

I reviewed Storm & Grace favorably upon its release; it's her best album overall, though I did like a couple of her Hot AC singles well enough. There was an interesting duet with Pink on her second album that nodded toward her break from Scientology; their voices sounded fantastic together.

TBB has gotten increasingly boring over the years, but I did like his production on this, and it's a shame she never issued a proper follow-up. Her music was certainly better than she was credited for at the time.
