have to say that while i'm a fan of the earlier albums (been a smog fan since... 1996 i think), i don't know that many of the songs from those are my favorites. i tend to think he's been getting better and better.

I agree with amateurist and iatee.

I never got the love for smog, especially certain tracks (dress sexy at my funeral makes me roll my eyes so hard)

I can't make a top ten, but "eid ma clack shaw" and "jim cain" are really inspired songs.

imo not putting both "cold blooded old times" and "dress sexy" on any smog opx is fronting, those are completely unassailable

I'm at least glad we have a small ilm opinion bloc when it comes to his new material! 'old stuff was better' would be such an easy and obvious music geek take. but his songwriting has gotten so sharp and so ambitious...I mean 'eid ma' feels like a novel to me.

! you are kinda the last guy I'd have expected to set up heartfelt/genuine vs. vaudeville as a binary - "Dress Sexy" has it both ways (which just considering Callahan as an author is to me a huge strength): it's a dumb joke (like the album's title) but behind it there's genuine yearning, petty pain, nursed resentments (the freaking amazing "for the first time in your life"). Vaudeville is often heartfelt and genuinely funny!

Almost impossible to pin it down to 10. Callahan has such a rich and consistently excellent discography now that he is surely a candidate for a full blooded (cold-blooded?) poll?

Tried to make myself a Smog/Bill Callahan "best of". Narrowed it down to 2 CDR70s before I gave up. This is a good thing.

(Having scrolled backwards through this thread) "Bathysphere" and "Our Anniversary" would definitely be on Disc 1.

Ta, nostormo. It was a bit of an odd un' in that it was just meant as a quick compilation for the car then I got sucked in and it became ... something else. There were a couple more tracks from "A River" but they lost out to some tracks I thought some friends might enjoy as "entry points" to the world of Callahan.

It did prompt me to go out and buy "Dream River", too.

Haven't bought anything by him since "Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest" (which I barely played) though possibly due to not being in the mood for him rather than suggesting a drop in quality.

I've kept on with him and at this point the only bad thing about BC is his consistency. You know what you're getting with a new Callahan album, kinda like a new Guy Clark CD.

The recent live album would be an excellent time to check in with him again if you haven't recently, it's so good.
