clearly defined "types of song" on an album.

you know, where an album can clearly be divided into "the ones that sound like x" and "the ones played in x style" if you get me. with little mixing and matching of the styles employed. just a few of this, a few of this and a few of this.

this hit me about aphex twin's "drukqs" a bit. there's the oriental music-box numbers. there's the short piano doodles. there's the manic drum'n'bassy numbers. ok, a few of the songs deviate from the formula, and some bridge the gap a bit. but most of the tracks can be allotted to one of the above categories.

What albums sound like this to you?

'Diverse' mid-90s intelligent dance music albums which you could pretty much guarantee would have one or more of the following:
- 'we can do drum 'n' bass too' number
- spy soundtrack number
- drifting ambient number
- heavy breakbeat number

Foremost examples include: Headstates by Slam; the first Death in Vegas album, Propellerheads, etc.

excellent idea. mid-90s major-label alt-rock:
- obscuro noisenik number w/nonsense lyrics, usually put near end, for that "Pere Ubu and/or Pavement were too formative influences on us" flavor
- ballad w/cello (power optional)
- "punk" "raver" w/screaming
- big hit single(s)

Mid 80s thrash metal album:
- at least one song with a misleadingly pretty/ sensitive acoustic intro that surprisingly turns into a raging thrash number#
- song about nuclear warfare
- song about televangelists
- post-fade to black/ remember tomorrow power ballad about being suicidal
- remainder: out and out thrash!

DMB only have 2.5 songs. (sweet sad ballad, happy rocker/mad rocker)

That's more than AC/DC. (absolutely no criticism intended though, mind).
