Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs Say 'YES New York'

New York's finest new rock acts will be anthologized on "YES New York," a 15-track collection due June 3 from Wolfgang Morden, the soundtrack imprint of Vice Records. The album kicks off with a previously unreleased live version of the Strokes' "New York City Cops" recorded in Iceland, and concludes with an acoustic version of "Our Time" performed by Unitard, a side project of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

"As transplants to New York, we had spent a decade watching the New York rock scene kinda suck with too many Heartbreaker wannabes and noisy sound-alikes," executive producers Chris White and Brian Long said in a statement. "In the spring of [2002] the 'scene' seemed to crystallize. Suddenly there were a lot of really interesting rock bands happening RIGHT NOW -- and they didn't all sound the same."

A number of the acts included on "YES New York" have released acclaimed albums in the past year, notably Interpol's Matador debut "Turn on the Bright Lights" and Ted Leo/Pharmacists' "Hearts of Oak" (Lookout!). Longwave just released its RCA debut, "The Strangest Things," while the Yeah Yeah Yeahs will unleash their Interscope debut, "Fever To Tell," on April 29.

The compilation's name pays homage to the seminal 1978 album "No New York," which was produced by Brian Eno and featured songs by local underground acts such as the Contortions, DNA, Mars, and Teenage Jesus and the Jerks.

Some proceeds from "YES No New York" will benefit Musicians on Call, which utilizes music as part of healing therapy in healthcare facilities.

Here is the tracklist for "YES New York":

"New York City Cops" (live), the Strokes
"Save Your City," Radio 4
"Zero Point," the Rogers Sisters
"The Ballad of the Sin Eater," Ted Leo/Pharmacists
"Ladyfingers," the Fever
"Next Plateau," Longwave
"Strangler," Calla
"Olio," the Rapture
"Rue the Day," the Walkmen
"NYC," Interpol
"The Right Hand," the Natural History
"Tired," LCD Soundsystem
"Decepticon" (DFA remix), Le Tigre
"What Used To Be French," Secret Machines
"Our Time" (acoustic), Unitard

i am vomiting with rage.

your null fame (yournullfame), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Sounds okay to me.

What don't you like about it?

Evan (Evan), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

vice magazine in self-consciously clever marketing bait SHOCKAH

they got priced out of dizzee rascal, OH WELL, back to mama nu-rock i guess

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

wasn't there already a "Yes L.A." comp? There should be a "Maybe Chicago" one.

hstencil, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, get over it. 'no new york' doesn't deserve it's acclaim. it's a good document of an interesting movement in rock music but it's not the be-all-end-all like so many people seem to think it is. is this name any more offensive than, say, carpark records putting out a comp called 'wanna buy a craprak'? (a reference to the rough trade comp 'wanna buy a bridge' that's deserves every bit, if not more, of the acclaim that 'no new york' gets)

j fail (cenotaph), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

everybody on this thread is OTM

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe people were vomiting over the blandness of the including track list

(can you vomit over blandness?)

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

no

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

(Actually I think the track list is fine, it's just that it looks a little too early-2002 for an edgy style mag to be putting out)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

what if you ate a whole loaf of wonder bread?

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

(do they even still make wonder bread anymore or has it ventured into the valhalla of the cheap metaphor?)

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

yes

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Shoot me. Shoot me now.

KATE, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

sure. when do you wanna schedule a time?

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

haha and momus to thread

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

and the title just suxxx

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm also peeved they included the "edgy" track from the ted leo album, the one that sounds like "sympathy for the devil" played by people who can't play very well.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

"edgy" is a nonissue as always. the tracklist looks better than nearly all of the albums from the artists in question.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

haha this whole project is "edgy"

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i am vomiting with rage.

DAMN that's good. I wish I'd written that.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

if it were bands from say Columbus, OH, no one would think it "edgy" in the slightest.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

well yes, but that's the point now innit? since whend did you become an apologist for the forces of international haircut rock?

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

for some reason I misread "Zero Point," the Rogers Sisters as "The Pointer Sisters" and thought "now that's cool"

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

"international haircut rock" = Guns N' Roses

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

The Pointer Sisters' inclusion on this compilation would be a masterstroke.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

haha. anyway, you know I'm really an apologist for standard-issue complaining about obvious targets

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Some proceeds from "YES No New York" will benefit Musicians on Call, which utilizes music as part of healing therapy in healthcare
facilities.

Not to be a dick (oops, too late) but of all the shitty charities to benifit! If they wanted to be rawk they shoulda given the proceeds to the Iraqui hunger fund or something. Or hell, I don't know, starving children in central america.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

So _how_ many times has the "Decepticon" remix been anthologized now...?

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

coming soon on cenotaph: "Perhaps Pittsburgh"

j fail (cenotaph), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

especially since the original is better!

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

"Definitely Des Moines"

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

can you vomit over blandness?

Coconut is pretty bland, and it makes me vomit.

hstencil, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

"Possibly Poughkeepsie!"

hstencil, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

"Sorta St. Louis"
"Kinda Kansas City"
"Maybe Madison"

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

"Undoubtedly Upper Darby"

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

"Definitely Dallas"
"Absolutely Austin"
Mostly Milwaukee"
"Was Walla Walla"

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Tipping Chipping Norton

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

That Ted Leo song is the best one on "Hearts of Oak".

But that comp sounds really lame--partly because of the bands involved and partly because of the title. Sure, No New York isn't as untouchable as people say, but why is Vice referencing it? You'd think from that article on 10 bands people never listen to & 10 bands people never talk about listening to that they'd think any kind of reference to No New York is bullshit--even if they're 'correcting' the title.

die9o (dhadis), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

"Please be consitent, Vice."

die9o (dhadis), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Mayhaps Mayberry

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

And this scene has already had its No New York-type anthology with This Is Next Year, which is really good and amazingly OTM in that the majority of bands that the Arena Rock folx picked have gone on to do something worthwhile...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah I was thinking of that one too Yanc3y

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

but but but but what about the Troubleman Mixtape?!

die9o (dhadis), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The Troubleman Mixtape isn't NYCentric, is it Diego? I own it, but I can't remember who's on it anymore.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, get over it. 'no new york' doesn't deserve it's acclaim. it's a good document of an interesting movement in rock music but it's not the be-all-end-all like so many people seem to think it is.

a) i was kidding - i think it's dippy to name such a bland, boring compilation after THE GREATEST COMPILATION OF ALL TIME, but that's their business i suppose.

b) it does deserve it's acclaim; it's an outstanding album and includes what is essentially the best material by all four of the bands.

c) saying "get over it" doesn't win an argument or make your point any more valid, it just makes you seem kind of like an ass. "yeah, bush is going to overturn roe v. wade - GET OVER IT!"

your null fame (yournullfame), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Yanc3y--

I was kidding--there are some great NY area bands on there (Pixeltan, the Bad Form, Black Dice), as well as some great non-NY bands, but as a comp it's pretty crappy.

die9o (dhadis), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I've nwever heard No New York. Is it any good?

Evan (Evan), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

"Yes New York" is just screaming for Used Compact Disc Veneration.. alongside all of those vital North Carolina, San Diego, Seattle, Manchester, etc. compilations that we all remember, right? "Pyloric Fuck" or something or other...

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Secret Machines rule live. Drummer.

Sasha Frere-Jones (Sasha Frere-Jones), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

(the Walkmen album's really good)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Their drummer is amazing! He hits the snare so fucking loud it *hurts*. If they wanna get big (and they easily could if they'd stop shooting themselves in the feet) they should be pushing "It's a Bad Wind...," not that boring-ass Flaming Lips rip listed above.

(I like about 25% of the Walkmen record)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

(I like 78% of it.)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

That Wlkmn song "Wake Up" is great but I only liked 45.7% of the rest. Mostly, I'm, like, dizzy with...something...that someone thinks a record celebrating New York, right now, would be all white rock bands and THAT WOULD BE OK. Hardly the bands' fault, as they are what they are, and a few are good, but what an opportunity lost for a compiler! What a fucking statement!

Sasha Frere-Jones (Sasha Frere-Jones), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

(Jody 53% off the mark!)

Knowing Gavin's "tastes," I'm surprised Enon didn't make the cut!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

OMG LOL JBR OTM

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

They shoulda just let ARE Weapons cover all of those songs and put THAT out. That would be something.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

liking percentages of records = uberclassic

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I like .02% of Matos' last post

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Or fuck! Even better: Let ARE Weapons cover Fear of a Black Planet and put that out (Brain has nearly every PE lyric memorized and his delivery ain't half bad)!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

but what an opportunity lost for a compiler! What a fucking statement!

What *would* be on this ideal comp of great current New York bands? Obviously no outtakes, and more diverse groups--but who specifically?

die9o (dhadis), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

What *would* be on this ideal comp of great current New York bands? Obviously no outtakes, and more diverse groups--but who specifically?

I am loving HTML!

Trying to be realistic and not include New Yorkers an indie couldn't get (Jay-Z, Nas, errr): Beans, Cannibal Ox, El-P (i know, he's white), Antibalas, The Bad Plus, Jason Moran, DJ rekha, ohhhhhhhh, and about a zillion improvisers, but that might reduce song content and make it not profitable, which I assume is part of the idea.

Sasha Frere-Jones (Sasha Frere-Jones), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I see what you're saying but it's kinda like saying why wasn't trouble funk on "flex yr head" which yes, would've been cool but kinda phony too

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I bet this CD will get played at Urban Outfitters and Diesel stores.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Sasha Frere-Jones in endorsing white acts shockah!

hstencil, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Point taken, Fritz, but isn't any compilation inherently "phony"? All the bands on a comp never actually play together and many of them hate each other, so why not make a different move that would plant a rhetorical flag? I think including diff. styles would also, again, raise the number of potential sales, because indie hip-hop and electronic fans (add Avery Tare, or that guy who was in Windsor) buy EVERYTHING. I am thinking of those late 70s Warner Brothers loss leader $2 LPs like Troublemakers and how diverse they were, and how many bands (Tower of Power and Charles Wright) I discovered because I wanted the Sex Pistols cuts.

Did I endorse a white act? Must consult cyclotron to prevent recurrence.

schooled by hippies, hopelessly mired in outdated lefty ideals, S

Sasha Frere-Jones (Sasha Frere-Jones), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i hear you... k-tel was really good at those "diverse" comps too like Ohio Players next to Melanie and stuff.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Personal mantra: More K-Tel, Less K.

Sasha Frere-Jones (Sasha Frere-Jones), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

the new troubleman comp >>>> than the mixtape (no, i'm not just talking about sound quality)

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
I'm listening to this now and it's even more boring than the tracklisting would suggest. The "scene" dies here!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 28 April 2003 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

The Scene Is Dead. Long Live The Scene.

jm (jtm), Monday, 28 April 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Look Out Detroit!

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Monday, 28 April 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh man. And this fucking acoustic, power ballad Yeah Yeah Yeahs closer ("Our Time," tho strangely listed as "Year to Be Hated") is a helluva kicker. Basically it's an attempt to get us all sad and nostalgic and goosebumpy about something that's going on here now. But, come to think of it, the way this disc works maybe it's Vice's hellaclever promotional strategy: Release a ho-hum disc that will kill any remaining excitement over NY rock and then end it with a downer of a tune that's like a prom theme with it's wistfulness (this could replace Green Day's "Good Riddance" as the new Sad Song for sitcoms) so that when historians come back to chronicle the prodigal-like NYC scene they can declare Vice both the scene's spectator and eulogizer in one fell swoop! Congrats Gavin!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 28 April 2003 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

New York Dulls.

Sam J. (samjeff), Monday, 28 April 2003 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like to make "Don't Detroit."

If this is New York's scene (and it isn't, there isn't a scene, or at least, these aren't the bands in it), then New York needs some real help. It's part garage-rock revival revival (it's not even an original revival any more, it's more or less a revival of the Detroit scene) and the rest are just standard-issue indie rock.

David Allen, Monday, 28 April 2003 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm actually really surprised that Vice is putting this comp out. You can say a lot of things about Vice, but it is a smart magazine, with a fairly independant view of pretty much everything. I actually think the mag has improve in the last couple of issues,ie not just about how cool cocaine is anymore. But this comp is a watered down bummer. I think the name is actually offensive, because no new york was an album, not a comp. This crap should be called Now That's What I Call New York! That would be funny and a lot more homest.

ano ano (ano ano), Friday, 9 May 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

The other reason the name is offensive is because it could have been used for a good album about New York bands now.
So, new question, what four bands would your version of Yes New York include. For me

Animal Collective
Black Dice
Gang Gang Dance
The Double

ano ano (ano ano), Friday, 9 May 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, "Yippee Youngstown"

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 9 May 2003 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)
