Spits-S/T (their second self titled album) (Slovenly Records)

Art A:
Favorite Releases of 2002 (alphabetical order)
City of Caterpillar - s/t album (Level-Plane)
-Dramatic and atmospheric hardcore that sounds like Antioch Arrow in outer space.
Combatwoundedveteran - Duck Down For the Torso (No Idea)
-Florida metal/hardcore where every blast and scream means something. I bet they like their Florida death metal just as much as their Hot Water Music.
Hot Hot Heat - Knock Knock Knock EP (SubPop)
-Spazzo pop music, better than their full-length.
Hot Snakes - Suicide Invoice (Swami)
-I have to admit that there was close to no chance this wasn't going to make it on this list after all those years I spent dreaming about a third Drive like Jehu album. This lacks the perfect production and performance of AutomaticMidnight (maybe because they are a true band now instead of a superhuman John Reis studio creation) but the songs are just as good.
Don Howland - Land Beyond the Mountains (Birdman)
-Dark, "American" music from the former Basshole. Blues, country, and rock and roll from a distinctive musician.
Ikara Colt - Chat and Business (Epitaph)
-British band's debut has that perfect punk rock "catchy" which doesn't depend on melody so much as rhythm. Raw, intelligent, and pissed off.
The Rapture - House of Jealous Lovers 12" Single (DFA)
-Rock band with 21st century dance production. I was shocked when I learned that they were realeasing a 12" single but I guess I was short-sighted because this works really well.
Rye Coalition - On Top (Tiger Style)
-Their best release since those early 7" records. The fact that it even comes close to recreating their live show ensures its spot on this list. Still sounds like punk rock to me.
We Ragazzi - The Ache (Self-Starter Foundation)
-Great pop melodies and flamboyant vocals make those English prog rock riffs sound cool. Seriously impressive songs.
El-P - Fantastic Damage (Def Jux)
-Dense hip hop. Huge sound, great tracks.
Neko Case - Blacklisted (Bloodshot)
-This is AMAZING. Country-ish songs with sparse but precise instrumentation and incredible singing. Her singing is pretty but I bet she sings louder than lots of "rock" singers - it sounds like it's shaking her entire body.
Out Hud - S.T.R.E.E.T.D.A.D. (Kranky)
-Retro or Futuristic? Maybe the vision of the future presented in 80's movies. The soundtrack to something cool.
Reissues
Consumers - All My Friends Are Dead (In the Red)
-Early American punk rock is surprisingly fast and modern-sounding. I wonder how big they would have been if they hadn't been stuck in the punk rock desert of Arizona 1977.
Michael Hurley - Blueberry Wine (Locust, originally Folkways 1964)
-"Captain Kid done left the moon cause there wasn't any wine up there." Intense, but smiling.
Maximillian Colby - Discography (Lovitt, from various records 1994-1995)
-Further proof that hardcore punk moved from Washington D.C. to the suburbs of Virginia sometime in the early 90's.
Big Rock Picks
-or-
What I Got My Little Brother For Christmas
Sparta - Wiretap Scars (Dreamworks)
-Cool guitar riffs, HUGE choruses. I didn't like this until I heard it played in a car.
Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf (Interscope)
-Big crunchy rock. Exactly how something like this should sound.

6. Tom Waits - Alice & Blood Money

1. El-P - Fantastic Damage
Top 10 Singles of 2002 (now with "amusing" commentary!):
10. "I've Got So Much Love To Give" - Thomas Bangalter & DJ Falcon
- actually it kind of sucks, but i needed ten. i'll probably have come around to it by this time next year anyway.
9. "Fuck All Night" - Mocky
- this song is very very funny, and makes me want to buy a sub-woofer specifically so I can make my own head explode (by which i mean 'this song has tons of bass'). UK garage has never had such a wonderful sense of humor.
8. "Makin Out" - No Doubt
- i think it was Maria who hipped me to this one. a definite classic, especially for Gwen Stefani's pseudo-"I'm so bored" voice.
7. "Losing My Edge" - LCD Soundsystem
- it was great at the time, although i don't really listen to it anymore. but who am i going to put on the bottom half of this list, Fat Joe? bonus points for the use of the phrase 'unremembered 80s'.
6. "Witness The Pitness" - MC Pitman
- real british rap. and by real, i mean completely fake. and hysterical(coronation street references 4-EVA!!!).
5. "Jenny From The Block" - Jennifer Lopez
- when making up this list, all i could hear in my head was that old adam sandler sketch... they're all gonna laugh at you, they're all gonna laugh at you...
4. "Oops Oh My" - Tweet (feat. Fabolous)
- the most hypnotic and weird single to hit the charts in ages. timbaland holds out against the onslaught of Pharrell & co.
3. "Come Into My World" - Kylie Minogue (Fischerspooner mix)
- come on, aerobicize with Kylie! of course, this is dirty aerobics. i think it's kind of scary that electroclash only came up with about three memorable singles, and one of them has Kylie making little pseudo-orgasmic squeals.
2. "Grindin'" - The Clipse
- The Neptunes really ought to fucking own this list (though that would be deadly boring). still, that beat is already a legend.
...and the winner is *DRUMROLL*...
1. "House Of Jealous Lovers" - The Rapture (DFA mix)
-mmm excellent. this is the real indie dance, forget The Faint. or have we already?
