Escovedo's great with his big orchestra. I really am not big on his maudlin stuff, but his rockers are terrific, esp. live.

Smog is smog.

Smog shows are like Cat Power shows if she didn't flake out and wasn't a hot chick

?

Smog's current band is very good, fairly tight--and he enunciates! Sometimes his encores are a bit dodgy.

All Cat Power seems to do at recent shows is flake out, so that's not very descriptive really.

no but very quiet, not very dynamic. I like him alot but I've known people who've complained he doesn't 'put on a show' - what they were expecting I do not know.

Also a know some women who have been flattered by the attentions of Bill Callahan so perhaps he is closer to being Cat Power's analogue than you expect.

Smog puts on a good show, or at least he did last time he came through town. His voice carries very well live.

(Smog) is a variable. Playing solo at All Tomorrows Parties last year he made me want to shoot myself (which, no doubt, was the idea). But I've seen him before with a band and he's been absolutely magnetic.

DOES ANYBODY HAVE THE LIVE PERFORMANCE BOOTLEG FROM SMOG AT THE ALL TOMORROW'S PARTIES CURATED BY SONIC YOUTH ?

I've seen Smog many times; the only time he's been Cat Power-esque was a show where he played solo and played all his songs very slowly and without much rhythm or energy. Otherwise, he's generally been great. The Rain On Lens songs were much better live than they were on the record specifically because they had a greater dynamic range. He doesn't put on a show in the sense that he doesn't have any between-song patter (although I did see a show where he told a drawn-out joke!).
