"Harry made a bareback rider proud and free upon a horse
And a fine coalminer for the NCB that was
A fallen angel and Jesus on the cross
A skating ballerina you should have seen her do the skater's waltz
Some people have got to paint and draw
Harry had to work iin clay and stone
Like the waves coming to the shore
It was in his blood and in his bones
Ignored by all the trendy boys in London and in Leeds
He might as well have been making toys or strings of beads
He could not be in the gallery

And then you get an artist says he doesn't want to paint at all
He takes an empty canvas and sticks it on the wall
The birds of a feather all the phonies and all of the fakes
While the dealers they get together
And they decide who gets the breaks
And who's going to be in the gallery

No lies he wouldn't compromise
No junk no bits of string
And all the lies we subsidise
That just don't mean a thing
I've got to say he passed away in obscurity
And now all the vultures are coming down from the tree
So he's going to be in the gallery

Unfortunately (probably due to threads like this one! Who keeps doing this? Just stop!), most of the ILE massive have departed forever, which is a shame because I'd really interested in their opinions re a) this song b) the fact that a large amount of ppl would agree w/ the sentiments of this song c) the fact that a large amount of ppl no longer feel anything wrong w/ agreeing w/ sentiments of this song

Seriously M Knopfler's gtr playing is very inspirational to me, I think he's one of the greats, really! I would almost dare to say 'influential', on myself. I try and sort of attempt to do what he does except that I use a pick, and loads of distortion and effects, and humbucking pickups, and also being not as good

Gotta Serve Somebody

prefer the Devo version.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

'Money for Nothing' is the most under-rated riff of all time.

Genius.

Sultans of Swing is one of the most classic things ever. The guitar playing is unbelievable. I've never heard this In the Gallery song.

Love Over Gold
Brothers in Arms

Ride Across The River
Sultans of Swing
Money for Nothing(album version)
Single Handed Sailor

As for best album, it's between Communique(def. underrated) and Love Over Gold.

I can do it in three:
Romeo & Juliet
Skateaway
Sultans of Swing

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 01:42 (twenty years ago)

1. Romeo & Juliet
2. Brothers in Arms
3. Portobello Belle
4. Down to the Waterline
5. Why Worry
6. So Far Away
7. Money For Nothing
8. Sultans of Swing

I was tempted to leave off "Sultans of Swing" based on sheer overexposure. "Down to the Waterline" beats it for that reason alone, though they've got more or less the same rhythmic feel. I couldn't think of a 9 or 10, but I suppose you could give honorable mention to "Walk of Life" and "Lady Writer."

no one has mentioned wild west end?!??!?!?!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

four months pass...
How come none of these lists have "Hand In Hand" on them?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 22 May 2005 10:37 (twenty years ago)

It took me years to even notice it but, yeah, the guitar on "Sultans of Swing" is great, particularly the solo in the middle.
