Prince: Classic or Dud?

I'm surprised this hasn't been done, unless it's under some obscure name somewhere, so here we go.

For bonus points, Prince in the 90s: Search and Destroy.

John Davey, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I remember a S&D session..very clearly.

Omar, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Ooops, sorry.

John Davey, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

No worries, you can find it under Search & Destroy, Stephen started the topic.

Omar, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Fer feck's sake.

CLASSIC. Anyone who says otherwise will receive my Unholy Snicker.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Dud, because I want to hear the unholy snicker.

In all seriousness though, Prince in theory is a classic but I've found that in actuality he's got a lot more dud tracks than he has classic at this point. I mean, at his best, he's unstoppable - but what about Diamonds & Pearls for fuck's sake? His name changing? Argh.

Ally, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

As far as I recall, the pre-_Around the World..._ era is 90% search / 10% destroy. Post-_Around the World..._, flip the numbers. Damned if I know much about the post- world, but in the pre- era ... oh, damn.

If you're not sure, buy _The Hits_ (with the B-sides CD), and make sure you skip His version of "Nothing Compares 2 U". "Another Lonely Christmas"...oh, yeah. (Which album has "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man"?)

David Raposa, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

[Cue lightning and thunder. A demonic face bursts through a cloud of sulfur, eyes glinting evil yellow. The mouth cracks into a sinister leer. There is a short intake of breath, and then...]

*snicker*

[It's much more impressive in person. Honest.]

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I got The Hits/The B Sides in Australia for £8, which I was pretty pleased about - I would have paid £8 for How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore alone.

I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man is on Sign 'O' The Times. I've never much cared for that track, though; in fact, I remember the whole middle two sides of that album being pretty weak. I usually treat 1999 - Lovesexy as Prince's classic period but the more I think about Around The World In A Day being the turning point between classic and dud the more sense it's making. Parade's kind of dull except for a couple of standout tracks, same with SOTT (for me anyway) and I have a headache so Lovesexy probably wouldn't be much good either.

So post 1985, dud, if only to receive half an Unholy Snicker.

John Davey, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Damn, beat me to it. And all that time I could have been praising 1999 and Purple Rain...

John Davey, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

classic up through lovesexy - the turning point was the wretched batman album.

always too prolific for almost anyone to get behind everything. I gave up trying to hear his new stuff long ago.

fritz, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

For some reason he is always classic, like COca COla. I dont really even knwo why. He just has the midas touch. Maybe becasue he's mulatto. I sense Mulattos are better.

Mike Hanle y, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

The Hits package is irritating 'cause it uses some trimmed versions. Urgh.

I generally agree with Dave, but I would never think of leaving out Sign O' the Times as a great record. After that it's quite patchy.

Imagine what his rep would be if he had died or retired around '87. Since then, his furious release rate has slowly diluted the greatness of his best years.

Andy, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

The thing is, though, even albums that people universally accept as duds (_Emancipation_, _Come_, _Graffiti Bridge_, _Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic_) are slow-growing classics. The only albums of his that I think do not work are _Chaos and Disorder_ and _New Power Soul_ (or whatever it was called), and both of those have at least two good songs on them.

Prince's prolific nature does work against him, not because he releases stuff of wildly-varying quality, but because he has this tendency to oversaturate the market with whatever idea has struck him. I'm an insatiable fan, so I don't mind, but people who aren't as awestruck or committed aren't going to be as generous or as patient with the music.

That's my take on it, anyway. I honestly think he's the most brilliant artist to emerge on the popular music scene in the last 30 years.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Actually flipping Dan's point on slow growers around -- I loved _Come_ pretty much from the start, as it's his bizarre industrial album from the year of Nine Inch Nails going hugely big-time. _Graffiti Bridge_ was equally enjoyable but still severely needs editing. The title track = wank. And _Emanicipation_ would loom larger in my memory if, well, there weren't so much of it. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Well, I think that overprolificness (now take that, Scrabble!) is a huge problem for Prince. On one hand, it's impressive; on the other hand, when your apparently non-stop recording schedule means fans can expect an album full of Prince belching by the year 2003 because he just needs to record something it's not really going to do much for your reputation, is it? It's not really damaging his legacy, he's done enough absolutely brilliant stuff to make up for it, but it's certainly making him completely irrelevant to today's scene, and it helped make him a complete joke nowadays. That and the whole GOING COMPLETELY NUTS thing.

Ally, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Prince (AKA the symbol) (AKA Slave) (AKA The Most Beautiful Girl in the World With the Worst Asscheeks This Side of Howard Stern as Fartman) isn't mental, is he? Just slightly tweaked, in a quaint, Warhol-esque, rock star fashion, right?

David Raposa, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Pussy Control has the best bass line in history !!!
In fact if I could find versions of Prince w/o his Yorkie vocals i would so be there .

"when doves cry" is breathtaking genius. nothing else i`ve heard has ever made any connection and much has in fact struck me as off-putting. well, the batman theme was ok and "1999" was cool. around the world in a day ranks among the most tedious albums i`ve sat through. i have generally failed to notice the sonic genius people talk about. so what should i be checking out?

Why get so hung up on albums anyhow? Aren't we all kool singles0r fanatiX now? "Cream" (get on topp) - so good, "Gett Off" - GRATE. Was Parade from the 90s? I like it. "Snow in April" or whatever, the immortal strip-club anthem "Girls and Boys", "Kiss"... AND YES "Pussy Control" - so good, what album wuz that from? - "Good evening ladies and gentlemen, boys and motherfuckin girls; this is your captain with no name speaking and I'm here to rock your world..."

Any truth to rumor that Prince is re-recording ALL his old albums so that he has the rights to the masters??

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 11 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Listening to 'Dirty Mind' and 'Parade' on tha bus the other week - the elegant simplicity of the former has dated better than the latter, to my ears anyhoo. I liked the singles off 'Diamonds and Pearls' and that African guitar choon. The black album has left no lingering memories. Very tired, soz choombattas !

Georges deRaisseur, Wednesday, 11 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'm a bit shaky on this, but as far as I know Prince claims that he HAS rerecorded all of his old albums and is just waiting for the 'right opportunity' to release them. I might be wrong though.

Seems like a complete waste of time to me, just another way for Prince to make more money. If he was talking about improving them, then maybe fair enough, but he was apparently intending to rerecord note for note. Plus, 1999:The New Master didn't exactly rock the world, so whatever, it seems like a pointless project.

John Davey, Wednesday, 11 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Prince was my first pop love: boy, was I obsessed with him as a youngster. The Lovesexy tour at Wembley Arena was just unbelievable. I *was* a screaming girlie. 'Parade' and 'Sign O' The Times' are the best two, imo. Not really listened to anything after that crap 'Batman' album. His decline since then has been absolutely heartbreaking for yours truly... all that facial hair nonsense... nearly as bad as George Michael. Where did it all go wrong, my old mucker?

But, still, CLASSIC. At his best, the greatest pop star bar none.

Johnathan, Wednesday, 11 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

And no one has yet mentioned the utter dynamism and barely-contained orgasmic energy of his live writhings. Better than Elvis in terms of get-back-to-the-microphone-just-in-time moves, segueless medleys, total mastery of his environment. Plus he can actually play guitar. Just extraordinary.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 11 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Nevereverever listened to him, he completely passed me by apart from the odd tune at a Christmas party. Just bought the 3-CD Hits with B-sides and I'm enjoying it a lot. But I don't see how he's a prodigy and there's not a lot on here that showcases his so-called eclecticism. As fun R'n'B and Funk it works very well though.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 15:08 (eighteen years ago) link

seriously. Obviously I'm only going by his singles here but the format doesn't exactly veer about does it? It's all funky pop rock and R'n'B - I wouldn't call it eclectic. Entertaining, yes, but from track to track you're not going to get any huge surprises. Please explain!

wogan lenin (dog latin), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 15:13 (eighteen years ago) link

Where was it claimed that Prince was particularly eclectic? (I think he is for a pop star anyway)

He's a prodigy because he plays guitar, drums, sings, writes and dances so well. Not many people can do ALL of those things to such a generally high standard whilst creating this bizarre, inventive and intoxicating persona and mystique at the same time.

Jordan (and Mallory), this isn't just a swipe at you but I'm getting fed up with this increase in bullshit one word replies like "Seriously?" - how does it help me appreciate this more or add to the discussion if every time I give a self-expressed opinion about a band or style I'm not an authority on if I'm answered with an obtuse put-down?
I wouldn't be so mad only I've found that in the last few months, that's all people seem to be doing. This is a music forum for objective discussion, not some toy-comparing playground for who's got the snarkiest answer.

Okay, yeh I can see why he's talented Stevem, and as I say I do enjoy it so people like Mallory can go stick their heads back up their asses until they have something interesting to say. All I'm saying is on my first couple of listens is I don't see where the fanfare'd eclecticism comes from. Prince has a sound and he sticks to it fairly rigidly if you ask me... at least on these singles he does.

His vaunted eclecticism comes from the way he blended funk, R&B, new wave, and modern pop in a way that sounded completely original while still "functioning" within the context of each of those disparate genres.

Adam Beales (Pye Poudre), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 15:26 (eighteen years ago) link

were you expecting one piece would be jazz, one trip-hop, one classical, one nu-metal, one muzak, one power-pop, one electrohouse, one acid jazz, one etc?

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 15:26 (eighteen years ago) link

Sorry, I was getting a response together.

I guess if you put it all under the "pop/r&b" heading it sounds samey. It's not John Zorn or anything. Still, it's not like "When Doves Cry" and "Get Off" and "Adore" are all from the same bag.

That said, I'm sure the singles collection leaves off a lot of the weirder album tracks (like, I don't know, "3 Chains O' Gold" or "The Cross").

SO CLASSIC

steal compass, drive north, disappear (tissp), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 15:29 (eighteen years ago) link

but, doglatin, where did you read that he was considered 'eclectic'?

i think the idea is that he and The Revolution were considered eclectic at the time by weaving disco and funk elements with synths and big rock in a way that no-one else was doing at the time. since then other artists e.g. Basement Jaxx, Beck, Andre 3000 have been deemed to be sounding like Prince in some way, indicating he defines this established method of merging all these elements for a high-level kind of pop (three aformentioned artists all also hailed as 'eclectic' in the past).

Where was it claimed that Prince was particularly eclectic? (I think he is for a pop star anyway)

And why is eclecticism a virtue?

Look, he's great because he wrote and performed good three or four-minute pop/R&B songs, sang them better than anyone in his generation, and wrote and produced other good three-minute songs for other artists. That's the short version.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 15:36 (eighteen years ago) link

-- Adam Beales (prettymuchmyrealnam...), August 2nd, 2006.

Bingo.

Whatever "eclecticism" really "means" is unimportant - (hold on, pulling my ass out of my head) what matters with Prince is that he combined styles and formats, crossed genres willy-nilly and got on Pop, R&B and Dance playlists / charts because HE DOESNT SOUND LIKE ANYONE ELSE. He could straight rock it ("The Cross" "Rock N Roll Is Alive and Well and It Lives...") play jazz and jazz-inflected takes on his own "sound" (see neglected N.E.W.S. and gigs with Miles Davis, hit the R&B charts like a titan, get covered by Tom Jones / Art of Noise, and come back with a single that draws from modern hip-hop production without sounding like an old man playing a young man's game ("Black Sweat"). Name another artist that's as frequently-mentioned a touchstone amongst modern black music, white music, hipster bullshit, the avant-garde, etc. and I'll be mighty impressed.

Mallory L . O'Donnell (That Bitch Camille), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 15:48 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm completely aghast at how good that song sounds after all these years. I would have totally thought it would be played out...I don't get it. I haven't been able to get the "Another Lonely Christmas" lyrics out of my head for months, since I finally got the "I Would Die 4 U" 12". Let us read together this instance of pure genius (I copied these from a lyrics site so don't hate me if they're not totally correct):

Last night I spent another lonely Christmas
Darling, darling, U should've been there
Cuz all the ones I dream about
U are the one that makes my love shout
U see, U are the only one I care 4

Remember the time we swam naked in your father's pool
Boy, he was upset that night
But boy, was that ever cool
Remember that night we played pokeno 4 money
And U robbed me blind
Remember how U used 2 scream so loud cuz U...
U hated that number 9
Hey, I saw your sister skatin' on the lake this afternoon
Good heaven, how she's grown
She swoons the boy skaters cuz she's so tall
But of all your father's children
All your father's children, baby
U know U are the finest of them all
U are brighter than the northern star and I...

Last night I spent another lonely Christmas
Darling, darling, U, U should've been there
Cuz U see, of all the ones I dream about
U are the one that makes my love shout
U see, U are the only one I care 4, listen

Do U still like banana daiquiris
boy we used 2 get so touched
U use 2 get so horny
U'd make me leave the lights on
I'd pay money just 2 C
your happy dancin silouette upon the pier
Sometimes I think I hear U smilin
Sometimes I think your here
I find myself holding every pillow
N the bed U and I used 2 share
Last night I spent another lonely Christmas
Darling U shouldn't B
U shouldn't B there, cuz U C

Last night I spent another lonely Christmas
Darling, darling, U, U should've been there
Cuz U see, of all the ones I dream about
U are the one that makes my love shout
U see, U are the only one I care 4, yeah

My mama used 2 say always trust your lover
But now I guess that only applies 2 her
Cuz baby, U promised me
Baby, U promised me U'd never leave
Then U died on the 25th day of December

Oh baby, last night, oh, I spent another lonely, lonely Christmas
Darling, baby, U, U should've been there
Cuz all the ones I dream about
U are the one that makes my love shout
U see, U are the only one I care 4, yeah

Your father said it was pneumonia
Your mother said it was stress
But the doctor said U were dead and I...
I say it's senseless
Every Christmas night 4 7 years now
I drink banana daiquiris till I'm blind
As long as I can hear U smiling, baby
U won't hear my tears
Another lonely Christmas is mine, yeah, mine, yeah
Another lonely Christmas is mine

Last night, yeah, I spent another lonely, lonely Christmas
Darling, darling, U should've been there, yeah
Cuz all the ones I dream about
U are the one that make my love shout
U see, U are the only one I care 4

This part in particular, it don't get no better. Half absurd, half heartfelt:

Every Christmas night 4 7 years now
I drink banana daiquiris till I'm blind
As long as I can hear U smiling, baby
U won't hear my tears
Another lonely Christmas is mine, yeah, mine, yeah
Another lonely Christmas is mine"

four weeks pass...

Does anyone else here find Soulseek strangely bereft of Prince? Why would nothing come up for Dirty Mind or Controversy? Thanks in advance for any ideas (and I only download things I've already bought on LP and feel entitled to)

two months pass...

Can someone more in the know than I am tell me if there's an extended version of "1999"? Maybe a 12" version?

As far as I know there is no extended version of "1999" in existence. The 12" single version is the same as the one on the album. The only official remixes of "1999" are the ones on 1999: The New Master, but they aren't particularly good (though not bad either). It's weird considering how remix-friendly 1999 (the album) sounds, that there seem to be only a handful of remixes from it. Someone should do a proper house mix of "Automatic" or "Let's Pretend We're Married".

a friend of mine had a great bootleg which was all the 12" mixes from 1978 up to the early 90s or so. if warners had some brains (and well if prince was less idiotic) theyd release it officially. i should try and find a torrent of it.

I've compiled a collection of 320kbps quality MP3 files of all Prince 12" mixes and B-sides? Should I maybe share them here?

Tuomas, Thursday, 22 January 2009 21:01 (sixteen years ago) link

Please do not share them here. Prince is very litigious when it comes to online copies of his music.

Ok.

Tuomas, Thursday, 22 January 2009 21:03 (sixteen years ago) link

Most of it is available on Soulseek anyway, you just have to search a bit.

Okay, anyone who wants this stuff, email me at lixnixn at yahoo dot co dot uk.

Lixnixn (at) yahoo.co.uk that is. Or just send me a webmail via ILX. (Remember to put your email address to the message though, since the ILX mail robot doesn't automatically reveal it.)

there was a fan mix called "12 Inches To The Yard" that was like this, but it was all at 160kbps.
