Sugarmen 3, Sharon Jones, Lee Fields & other funk-soul revivalists?

whattaya think? I'm dubious but I think the dap records thing might be hitting it about as well as could be imagined so far.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, I dig that Sugarman 3.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

that sharon jones record is HAWWWTT

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

it is good. I hear the live show is nice too

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

the records are good not great but have lots of fun stuff on them. live's the thing, or so I hear, v. v. typical of funk bands generally

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

some of those guys are alright but I would much rather see the real deal like Melvin Sparks do it like it should be done

Ben Silver (Ben Silver), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i keep passing up a sharron jones used cd. i'm afraid it's just going to be another james brown band rippoff funk cd. (please correct me if i'm wrong)

i love Poets of Rhythm. "Discern/ Define" is more stoned out funk than just straight 45 funk sound. they rereleased a comp of old stuff from 93-95 that's good, but isn't as great. falls too much into that jb's sound.

their side project Whitfield Brothers is kinda cool. some amazing songs, but some of the stuff just wanders aimlessly.

JasonD (JasonD), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

another james brown band rippoff funk

it is, for sure, but done really well... sounds like one of the old live at the apollo records. still kinda limiting though

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

The Poets comp of early stuff was not released by them at all, and in fact they haven't gotten a dime for it. Basically, they licensed those tracks to a shady German label ten years ago, who then licensed them to a shady American label, who put out that comp without even speaking to the band once. This is all detailed in the third issue of Wax Poetics, by the way.

The Daktaris' album is AWESOME.

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
Hatahs need to step off.
I just got back from the Sharon Jones show at the Knitting Factory and she dragged my ass on stage and made me dance with her and then solo until she was satisfied.
I'm dead fucking serious.
I have never shook my ass so hard.
This is NOT faux funk. It's for real and then some.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 28 August 2004 05:23 (twenty years ago)

Those who are interested can swing by the Tofu Hut: I've got both sides of her new 45 release up for DL... one of them is a soul remake of "this land is your land" that might qualify as the official NYC Trojan Elephant protest song as far as I'm concerned.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 28 August 2004 05:25 (twenty years ago)

The thing that gets me about Sharon Jones is how uttterly authentic her stuff sounds. I was playing the "What Have You Done For Me Lately" remake for someone, and they asked me "So, is this an old group that Janet Jackson covered??!!" That just made me like it even more.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 28 August 2004 15:17 (twenty years ago)

Sharon Jones and Dap-Kings are a blatant James Brown rip, but they're really good at it. They played Nashville and it was a gas, totally. The sound isn't antiseptic at all. Good stuff.

eddie hurt (ddduncan), Saturday, 28 August 2004 15:48 (twenty years ago)

rip or what, when it's live, saturday night, who cares? Great bar band!

sexyDancer, Saturday, 28 August 2004 16:03 (twenty years ago)

exactly. they were incredible live. their horns are horny too.

A rough week or two for these guys- office is burglarized, former guitar player dies in plane crash.

lemmy tristano (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 20 February 2009 16:15 (sixteen years ago)

Didn't they have lots of old-school analog equipment and stuff in their space? Where in Brooklyn are they? That's sad about the guitarist.

curmudgeon, Friday, 20 February 2009 16:41 (sixteen years ago)

My understanding was that it was office not studio that was burglarized, but I could be wrong. Guitar player was the Chuck Mangione guy, the one who grew up in the DC area.

lemmy tristano (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 20 February 2009 17:01 (sixteen years ago)

Hm, I guess that was not right. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/18/arts/music/18arts-DAPTONERECOR_BRF.html

though it hoped to reopen by Friday for a planned recording session for Rod Stewart.

really enjoying much of this new sharon jones and the dap-kings album, and i'm not a big fan of the soul revivalists (and i haven't been a huge fan of SJATD-K's, either).

Just saw SJADK in Boston and have to echo the above - not normally my thing but they are totally convincing. The horn section is rock solid and hypnotic to look at. They took more than a few pages from James Brown's playbook but who cares? It's a damn good playbook and he's dead! They even did a bit of the classic JB's "Tighten Up".

so has anyone seen lee fields on his current tour?

i'll probably go see him regardless, but was just curious...

his latest album is fucking great.

Missed him. Still want to see him. He's on Facebook and commented on an obit I wrote for DC soul musician Al Johnson

curmudgeon, Monday, 4 November 2013 16:44 (eleven years ago)

From Chitlin Circuit Soul thread

I missed Lee Fields at the 930 Club last night (I was seeing Bale Folclorico de Bahia). He gets to play there because he has done things with Daptone. Thus, he has indie-rock cred with certain booking agents and fans, while Mel Waiters does not.

Still haven't listened to this Atlanta guitar-slinging retro soulster on Burger Records (who used to back Cee-lo). Just read about him in NY Times and elsewhere. He's in DC tonight

Curtis Harding track was used for the season closer of Falcon and Winter Soldier, which I'm sure is going to blow his profile up. I certainly hadn't heard him until then, and then I checked out "Face the Fear" last night and I love this album.
