Utterly wonderful. And I say this having done the liner notes for a Raunchy Young Lepers release.

I hate it. Cuz bands are so (non-musically at least) inarticulate, and I never what they want...do they want something serious, something wild and goofy, something dark and effed up.
I hate commission work. But it's like, either they pay well or they're your friends. But like, you wouldn't ask them to write a song for you, or would you?

I'd love to write the liner notes for a proper reissue of all of the Tower Recordings stuff, having seen most of it go down firsthand, and believing them to still be the most underrated NYC band of all time.

Also, Archie Shepp's Coral Rock, Arthur Russell's World of Echo, a best of Jandek CD, and a proper issue of Neil's On The Beach would all be quite fun.

But, hey, I've got enough work here

LINER NOTES ARE STONER ROCK HEAVEN.

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

oh and obviously I really like the idea of liner notes (especially on reissues). Anyone who's ever read any by Eugene Chadbourne, Byron Coley or Thurston know they are usually insightful and worth the price of admission alone.

yadda yadda yadda !!! I'm fucking hyped. It's going to be dark, wild, crazy, stoned and fucked up. I have 100 percent leeway on what to contribute. HOORAY. And no interview - just soundbites. Liner notes stand the test of time. Not wrapped in tomorrow's fish and chips.

okay, it's not always a hassle. here's some I did for a band that wound up not putting out there alb, changing their name (because it was seen in the Hives' video) and then breaking up. total meltz-tosches ripoff, but a blast to write:

the Negatives life, duh, is no rose garden. no blissful trip down a lazy river. nope, life, as the sages say, is a shit sandwich. one bite at a time. but that's all right. that's, of course, the point. i mean, where would we be-as a species-if we didn't get out teeth kicked in every once in a while? if we weren't on a first name basis with at least one of the following: collections agent, parole officers, vice cop, emergency ward nurse, or priest? how could we possibly hope to draw any MEANING out of life if we never got fired, dumped, laid-off, evicted, chased out of town, cut off at the bar, repossessed, foreclosed, cheated, back-stabbed, or punched in the gut for no good reason? i don't know about you, but i don't trust anybody who says they've never held a grudge for at least a year or felt the satisfaction in someone else's misery. life is petty, cruel, savage, and arbitrary. and so too, thank God, are the NEGATIVES.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

cool.

this band is a classic 80s band from the british psychedelic/independant as fuck scene. fairly well known and currently going through a revival. maybe i will see a classic or dud - the liner notes to: ______________?

answer.

D0DEX THAT GUY IS ALL GUY AND THAT.

I was asked to write the liner notes for the CD reissue of John Fahey's Dances of Death and Other Plantation Favorites--apparently because I wrote a big feature story about him for my (not very widely distributed) paper and the Fantasy folks liked it. It wasn't even a complimentary piece, necessarily (let's just say I like City of Refuge a lot more now than I did back then).

Anyway, the gig didn't pay very well, but it certainly was one of the more interesting and satisfying journalistic experiences of my career. Once I got all the material from Fantasy, I realized there were a lot of discrepancies between accounts, not to mention missing or fishy info. So rather than gloss over all that and pontificate about Fahey's intent all on my own (something I would never presume to do on one of his own CDs), I called him up and spent a lot of time over the course of about two weeks pestering him with questions. Fantasy didn't seem to care what I wrote either way, so I spent a lot of time on it, and I really learned a lot about him, his music, and, frankly, about the process of doing this kind of research project. And it turns out that a lot of the accepted wisdom surrounding the album and that period of his life was just plain wrong. I still see the disc in stores all the time, which is better reward than the check they sent me.

So, yeah, classic.

They wrap things in fish and chips now??
