Which Punk Band Ruined Your Town and Why?

Congruent with that other thread, no matter what punk rock mecca you were from, there had to be at least one punk rock band, maybe more, in the "scene" who completely sucked and everyone made fun of. Tell us who they were, and why they sucked.

hstencil, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

There's this band called the Strokes...

die9o (dhadis), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

punk band, die90, the key phrase is punk band. Not band of punks (in the prison sense of the word).

hstencil, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

What if the Strokes played a little faster and louder, would they count then? Cos they're really very irritating.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Do they all wear the same Misfits t-shirt?

But yeah, the Strokes aren't punk, they're New Wave.

die9o (dhadis), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

New wave hooker girls.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

(Sorry to derail the thread so quickly, HS.)

die9o (dhadis), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

di390, I know where you live. Er...

hstencil, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

heh heh.

So what punk band ruined your town, st3ncil?

die9o (dhadis), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

The Strokes.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

where do I start? Personally, it was Erchint, but there were plenty of other lousy punk bands in Louisville besides them.

hstencil, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

OH GOD! start with the big boys...

Hot Water Music!

ha!
m.

msp, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Avail is from Richmond. So every single band in Richmond sounds like Avail. Fuck you, Avail.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Young Pioneers didn't sound like Avail.

hstencil, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Avril Lagivne

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm talkin' about nowadays, not yesterdays, dude.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I think of Avail as yesterdays since I saw them over 10 years ago!

hstencil, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought every Richmond 'punk' band now sounded like a cross between Orchid and and Godspeed You Black Emperor. But I can really only think of two: City of Caterpillar and Pg. 99. And that description's kind of off for the latter band.

Anyway, I think Avail counts.

Even Action Patrol (who were sometimes great) had that melodic punk thing going in some of their songs.

die9o (dhadis), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Rape Kit. Actually I just made that up.

Aaron A., Tuesday, 8 April 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I live in Richmond, and I haven't heard of either of the two bands you mentioned, but I'll keep an eye out as yr description sounds interesting. Most of what I hear sounds like standard hardcore, which is what I think of Avail as.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Does Loincloth ever play in Richmond? It's Pen from Honor Role/Breadwinner, and their demo sounded *awesome*. The Rah Bras rule, too. Neither of those bands are explicitly punk, though...

die9o (dhadis), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Still Life is amazing but they sort of invented screamo so thanks alot Still Life (from the same town as i) also i deliver pizzas with a member of Strung Out (when i have a car)

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

In my village we only had a Status Quo rip-off band.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Many, many bands have ruined hardcore/punk for Providence.

Daughters (good enough band, awful fans and mostly awful people)
A Trillion Barnicle Lapse
And I Can't Wait
Bi-Anal Ham Sandwich
XFilesX

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

D Generation (for being so far ahead of the sleazepunk revivalism curve and so influential to that whole goddamn scene)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Bi-Anal Ham Sandwich wins the Best Godawful Name award for the week.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

The Datsuns aren't actually from anywhere near my town, but I'm willing to bet they've fucked it over in some way.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

XFilesX

damn that's worse than Dallas' own Dot Commies

Aaron A., Tuesday, 8 April 2003 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Richmond -- DEFINITELY AVAIL. Action Patrol, holy crap -- I used to love those guys.

Williamsburg -- The Buddy System. (Love ya, Nick! ;-) )

Clarke B. (stolenbus), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Ruined in the sense of making all the other bands sound like crap of course. ;-) Actually, Seven Mary Three were from 'round here weren't they?

Clarke B. (stolenbus), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

The White Stripes

Mike Taylor (mjt), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

beat happening

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

(i win, btw)

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

did you read the pitchfork news today... sprechen Sie schadenfreude?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

what are you implying? that I had something to do with it? *cackles*

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

:-D

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, i'd think that dashboard confessional, insane clown posse, and phish in equal amounts have more to do with olympia these days than beat happening.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i spit on your gravy

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Not punk per se, but Sugar Ray. Of course, they WANTED to be punk at some point sort of, it gives them 'cred.'

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Fugazi! Mainly because I blame them for the fact that people my age go to all these balls-out shows in DC and just stand there hands-in-pockets fist-around-beer the entire time.

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like to say Blink-182, but they're not punk, and they didn't ruin it. So I'll say Unwritten Law but not mean it.

Famous Athlete, Wednesday, 9 April 2003 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

the ataris have made my hometown virginia beach more of a shithole than it was to begin with.

Brock K. (Brock K.), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The Briefs

(grrr)

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

because now every big punk band here is trying to be this bland, processed aggregate of the Vibrators, the Buzzcocks, the Adverts, and the Undertones... but only succeed in the fashion more than the actual music (otherwise, the influencers here I have no problems with at all)

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

(if only the rest of the band were like the drummer.. sigh)

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Moss Icon.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Pleased Youth. Only because they were the only band that literally tried to beat me up over a bad review.

mike a (mike a), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha Clarke, just saw this now. < sarcasm> Yeah, Williamsburg was so fucking awesome before we came along, and look at it now. < /sarcasm>

Nick A. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

definitely Anti-Flag. they took punk down to a saleable level for high-schoolers and their parents' money in no time flat, then encouraged kids to steal books from libraries. that and somebody i know abused his power as a sysadmin at a Pittsburgh university and got some emails from Justin Sane thanking some fan for 'awesome handjob action'.

god they are the worst thing ever.

mosurock (mosurock), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

(i win, btw)

actually jess, you do. because the Dead Milkmen were indefensible!

(... not that Philly had much of punk scene to wreck in the first place but still)

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 10 April 2003 02:45 (twenty-two years ago)

three years pass...
i've seen that buy anal ham sandwich guy that some dude talked about and it's this one dude who sings some weird shit. he is not very punk

Josh Mcgee, Thursday, 20 April 2006 04:10 (nineteen years ago)

In my hometown there was only one punk band, the Sick Society. At their first and last show, their power got cut and they were ordered offstage midway through the second song. This was in 1984.

dave q (listerine), Thursday, 20 April 2006 07:13 (nineteen years ago)

too many to count

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 20 April 2006 08:42 (nineteen years ago)

I would have to say New Bomb Turks only because they're the best-known band to come out of Columbus (certainly within punk circles) and their career is still a litany of amazing recordings that barely missed the rawk explosion. With them as a role model, every other punk band has a hard time being as good, but also has an equally hard time thinking they can ever go anywhere since the Turks were so fucking good and didn't (not as far as they could/should have at any rate).

Brian O'Neill (NYCNative), Thursday, 20 April 2006 10:20 (nineteen years ago)

This little outfit called The Sex Pistols...
