This Is A Thread For Honouring Neko Case's Fire

I bet honor the fire's a specific Killing Joke reference which I've just been dead offensive about for no apparent reason. Fuck it.

Had yet another panic attack today. I've had a lot of them since October, developed the whole kind of attraction/repulsion to sharp objects which I think I'm over with, took to opening the window as wide as I could and just wondering, wondering what if...

Never went that far. Neko Case held me back. Specifically, Runnin' Out Of Fools held me back. Weirdly, it's the one song off Blacklisted she didn't write (weird? dunno). And it's the one where she really, really lets go. No-one, no-one at all, howls like Neko howls, and nothing compares to Runnin' Out Of Fools for it. She gets freaky on quite a lot of other tracks, gets very, very close to it, but Runnin' Out Of Fools is when she opens wide and she fucking HOWLS. "WhhhhAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH GUESS YOU Must be... RUNNIN' out of foo, hoo, hools..." It's so utterly, utterly intense. And when I lost it, I would fucking RUN to this song, I would put it on, and I'd lie on the bed trembling, whispering the verses under my breath "Are you sure you got the right number... is it me you wanna talk to... tonight..." then wait, wait for the chorus, then stand on the chair and HOWL out onto Dawlish Road, "even FOOLS like meee... eee... eee (backing, listed as 'sexy backing vocals' in the sleeve: "Fools. Like. Me.")". Dear, sweet, Jesus, H, Christ. Neko Case is The Voice. She cannot sing a single syllable without it sounding like it's from the very bottom of the very bottom of THE VERY BOTTOM of her soul. She's doomed and vengeful, and she'll beeeeeeeee around...

Yeah. And then you look at the back of Blacklisted, cos the reviews didn't mention Runnin' Out Of Fools, and as you see the song titles it's like the adverts for those fucking horrid covers albums of old standards by Robson Greene or Daniel O'Donnell or someone, where the titles flash along the bottom of the screen and whichever odious turd's advert it is will appear and sing the title AND ONLY THE TITLE of the song. Blacklisted's back cover triggers off those very same impulses, but Neko is The Voice, she sure as fuck ain't Daniel O'Donnell (what exactly does his voice sound like anyway?). The refrain of "don't let 'em tell you're nothing, don't let 'em break your hearts too" in Pretty Girls ("won't say that I told you so"). Deep Red Bells. "It's better my sweet that we hover like geese, cos there's no sure footing, no love I believe" off Outro With Bees. Then there's Furnace Room Lullaby, with Twist The Knife, and "I just can't shake this feelin', that I'm nothing in your eyes" on Set Out Running...

Cunt next door reckoned my taste in music was shit. He listened to Hero by Enrique Iglesias at full volume. He was a cunt.

Neko Case is gorgeous. Neko is The Voice.

And Maow were pretty sweet too.

Hero is a great song!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I like NEKO wafers! so props to ya!

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

"Kiss me, infidel" is just about the greatest thing ever said on ILM.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Neko a lot but her cover of "Runnin' Out of Fools" not at all. It seemed like a unwise choice for a cover.

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Shit, I sounded like Geir. I'll listen to it again and try to be more specific.

Neko Case really is The Voice, and her songwriting is sublime as well. As far as I'm concerned she's a big star. I saw her live and was amazed that she just belted out all those songs unembelished; what a natural. The album covers and press shots let me to expect more of a glamour-girl though. She's pretty but much more down to earth than I imagined. And William if you're really going through all that, it's great you found comfort in music, especially such lovely music. I forgot that I haven't put any Neko on my iPod yet; I must correct that this evening!

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Also - The Virginian - is it as good?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

It's great, but objectively I rank it lesser to the next two LPs. It's generally more upbeat. She does a great cover of Scott Walker's "Dutchess". If you love her, and it's clear you do, just get it.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I would gladly start a new fire and Honour it in her name.
Siddown, Alex, I have another fire on the back burner for Jaz Coleman. But you must acknowledge and accept that Jaz Coleman is NOT NOT NOT sexier than Neko Case. No! Accept it! (*begins to struggle to hold Alex down*) ACCEPT IT, GODDAMMNIT! YOU KNOW IT'S TRUE!

Neko Case is fucking amazing and I adore Blacklisted like it's a member of my family.

I was quite disquieted by those pictures of her playing pool with all her bits out, that someone posted elsethread tho - doesn't seem like the sort of thing she'd do...

Still...incredible voice. Incredible songs. Thanks, The New Pornographers, for introducing me!

Best. Pictures. Ever.

Post. Hyper. Link?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I knew this'd happen. Thing is, while I find it a smidge odd that Neko'd do something as outre as "arty" nekkid shots, that doesn't mean she doesn't look amazing. And thinking about it, I've never even read a single interview with her so I've not clue what she's like as a person - maybe she's all about "oops my clothes fell off" all the time for all I know...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 02:42 (twenty-two years ago)

One more reason to love her.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Well she's a photo girl (the best kind of art school chicks...) so this sort of thing is really probably Freshman-year-4-in-the-morning-day-before-it's-due passe for her... though I'd like to think she's smarter than that...

jm (jtm), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow she looks great in those photos!

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Especially that last one -- smokily, curvily, drapily, head-cockedily gorgeous.

Still trying to get into "Careless Whispers" Will?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 08:45 (twenty-two years ago)

No. Gave up on that ages ago. It's really irritating that I can only ever write when I'm going mental.

j.a.e, Wednesday, 9 April 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Eric Stoltz is in that, hard to believe...

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"Your ghost is a light show
on the Grand Coulee Dam
the river is watching you
at the drive in tonight"

It's great. That said, it's more like space-country than alt-country, in the same way the Czars last album is. And there's another good voice.

Hunter (Hunter), Thursday, 10 April 2003 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Most of those pics hardly look like her. I mean she is "too much the sexy," but not in that modelish, air brushed way. Her voice is a bit pinched, and her lyrics a bit goth, but yeah, she sings like a motherfucker live.

Normal Neko, w/ Nice Scarf.

jm (jtm), Thursday, 10 April 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that really her in the shootin' pool with no pants on shoot? I thought she was a bit classier than that (not that the pics are exactly smutty, but...). Didn't think she was the sort to pose nude (it being a more desperate career move).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in NYC does not know a good thing when he sees it. Move aside, son, you're blocking my view of the eye candy.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 10 April 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes it's really her:

http://www.kutie.com/html/fotos/neko.html

The snapper, Victoria Renard, seems to specialise in hypertechnicolour grotesquerie inna Jon Waters stylee...class.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 11 April 2003 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

"I'd like to fuck her on the tennis court, if you catch my drift."

I think the line is, "if you know what I'm saying." Which sets up the comeback, "No, I have no idea what you're saying."

Nitpicking.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 11 April 2003 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

three months pass...
Revive. Golly she sings like the dickens live...

JimmyMod (No really, etc), Sunday, 27 July 2003 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

great pics. can some mod throw an NSFW tag on this, tho? some of us _don't_ want to get fired.

also, neko does have the ability to go from frumpy cornfed chick to hot glamour gal in the span of 10 minutes, which is usually the amount of time it takes her to get up on stage & get warmed up.
