...Is it any good?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Why do I expect jess to come on here any minute and give me shit for liking Deerhoof? No, no, that won't happen...

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 10:19 (twenty-two years ago)

...Either that, or Everett True or Stevie Chick will tell me it's great.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh Deerhoof! I could say a lot of great things about Deerhoof. Apple O' is great, but Reveille is really outstanding! Really, just absurd, and catchy. Ihear they're great live, but haven't seen them yet (next week).

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

They are great live, saw 'em last November in Oregon with jack cole. I haven't heard the new record yet.

hstencil, Wednesday, 9 April 2003 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

They've never played the UK :(

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

It's great.

Jerry (Jerry), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought they were in Europe last month. I'm surprised they didn't play in the UK.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

It's great.

Boom Boom

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

They were in France -they invited me to the Paris show, but I couldn't make it :(

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Apple O' is good, not as great as Reveille, but good. It's a lot more straightforward, more...defined(?) maybe. It's totally worth picking up. I'm not so sure about the new guitarist though. He's the one that makes the album less exciting than Reveille, or at least I assume it's his fault.

Andrew Beckerman, Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

panda panda panda panda pan--- bye bye

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I still haven't spent enough time with Apple O', but I've found it really dull during the four or so spins I've given it. I'm totally prepared to change my mind, though.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a little wary of the new one from what I've heard about it so far... suppose I'll have to see for myself though. I sure love Reveille.

slutsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax, is that actually supposed to make any sense?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

if you are listening to track #10 on the CD i hope so!

they have been playing lots of this album live for the last 5 bananas so it was great to hear it in recorded form.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

So are they paying "homage" to Mark E Smith?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I ahven't got Apple O yet, so I can only hypothesise.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah they played that panda song in Portland last year.

hstencil, Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

more than likely they are paying homage to a panda

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

It's that simple, huh? Really...that simple?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I meant this, maybe? =

c/d--Mark E Smith "Pander Panda Panzer"

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i think it rules. "Panda Panda Panda" is probably the best song.

Sasha Frere-Jones (Sasha Frere-Jones), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

man i saw them live and it was really awful. there were only like 20 people in the room and most of em left.

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

It's mastered really hot.

john allen, Wednesday, 9 April 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Gotta agree with Yancey, Apple O' feels kinda weak compared with Reveille. The production is pretty lackluster, and I miss the contrast between the twee keyboard lines and hulking guitars. I'll keep listening though.

Nick Mirov (nick), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Deerhoof make me all sweaty.

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

If it has more of that almost-Led-Zep stomp to it as Reveille, it has to be good.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Just saw them at Bottom of the Hill in SF last weekend. The new guitarist was in the band along time ago and recently rejoined. The drummer is the clear band leader though. There was a fine article about them in the Guardian (that's the San Francisco Bay Guardian) at http://www.sfbg.com/noise/27-03/happy_hunting.html where the drummer atrributes the new sound to an epiphany he had in relation to Kim Deal.

JBerryBrown, Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

deerhoof?

SFBG: WE REVIEW OUR FRIEND'S BANDS SO THAT OBJECTIVE PEOPLE DON'T HAVE TO.

ugh

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

the drummer is definitely not the band leader. no one is. even their new guy has fundamentally mixed up things. in fact, old material has mutated. when you see them live, you can see how different members sometimes play director.

the new one is great. totally good to have a good copy of their recent live performances. (i've seen them about 5 times in the last 6 or 7 months.) reveille was tremendous, but the problem is that a lot of those songs really couldn't be faithfully produced live... the feeling and intent would be there, but not the sound.

apple o represents more of their current live feel....(although "l'amour stories" is definitely proof that what i'm going on and on about is wrong... total studio magick.)

ultimately, i'm biased because for the last few years, deerhoof has easily been one of my favorite bands.

i need to shut up else i won't have any material for me own review.

msp, Wednesday, 9 April 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, I'm sold. I'll get it tomorrow. Reveille was definitely one of my discoveries of the last year.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

msp is otm btw.

i think that my leanings toward apple o have been wrought by the live performances (some of the same that msp is referencing) which have left deep impressions...

in fact, when i first starting playing apple o i immediately recognized most of the songs...

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

What can you folks tell me about pre-Revielle releases? I got Halfbird and was somewhat disappointed by the lack of tunes and general muddyness...

sammm, Thursday, 10 April 2003 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

seven months pass...
revive, because i've been listening to 'Apple O' a lot and it is one of my favourite albums of the year, and because they are going to be touring in the UK in early december with The Ex. yey!
