Andy Bell and Alison Moyet? And what proof do we have that they are both two seperate people?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Russel Mael and Nina Hagen? Admittedly the latter could be scarily girly too, to the point of sounding a like a nauseating cartoonchild.

Ah screw it, I guess the death metal chicks would win the latter category. I'll nominate the girl who growled all over the last Sinister album, even if she did wimp out and cup the mic.

Øystein Holm-Olsen (Øystein H-O), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah Vaughan had the deepest voice i've heard for a female singer, it took a good couple of minutes of listening to 'The Mystery Of Man' for the first time before i realise the song was by a woman!

with the men, surely its a case of who does the winciest falsetto, but i was confused by Jack White's spot on 'Danger! High Voltage!' too because in the video his parts are sung by a woman

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Jimmy Scott for males.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

"Itchy Woo" ;-)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I always thought that Carla Bozulich of the Geraldine Fibbers had a voice that could pass for a man's. Especially on that "San Pedro" song she sang on that Mike Watt album.

boldbury, Wednesday, 9 April 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Boldbury = OTM

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Huh? What's OTM?

boldbury, Wednesday, 9 April 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Michael Quercio - male vocals don't get much more effeminate.

mike a (mike a), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Not exactly on topic, but I remember being so confused by Mr. Big and whether the lead singer was a dude or not a dude. I couldn't tell by looks and the voice was also ambiguous. The only that gave it away was my brothers explaining the adams apple logic to me.

Carey (Carey), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

marla glenn sounds very masculine

i've never seen nina simone and terry callier in the same room together

JasonD (JasonD), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Russel Mael is deeply unsettling. Lesley Woods from the Au-Pairs has a pretty deep voice.

When I was about thirteen I heard Placebo for the first time and thought it was Alanis Morisette, but er, nah.

Ferg (Ferg), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I always thought "Hello It's Me" was Carol King, so I'll say Rundgren is a little percy-pants in the vocal dept. That freak from Simply Red is a lady-man too. And Robert Plant is a Viking girl.

andy, Wednesday, 9 April 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry, boldbury. it's "on the mark" -- meaning i agree with you about carla bozulich.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I always thought it was "on the money"..

steve, Wednesday, 9 April 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Maxwell's cover of "This Woman's Work" is convincing role-playing.

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Andy Bell

Who funnily enough I've been listening to this morning. COINCEDENCE?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I gotcha, jaymc. I think that was the first time anybody has ever responded to one of my posts here. Not that I post here very much, mind you.

boldbury, Wednesday, 9 April 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

That guy from Sunny Day RE sounds pretty effeminate.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

is it on the mark or what you bastards$#!%$#@%^

gore, Wednesday, 9 April 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going with "Obese Terror Monkey".

boldbury, Wednesday, 9 April 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Harry Chapin's bearish bass player, the one who sings the weird bridge in "Taxi".

Arthur (Arthur), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

"Fairground" by Simply Red I honestly thought was sung by a woman when I first heard it.

Nick H, Wednesday, 9 April 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I was absolutely certain that Gotta Get Through This was sung by a woman for months. Then I saw him on TOTP. Oh.

And Don't Leave Me This Way by The Communards surely pretty much owns this thread, no?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The Bee Gees and Modern Talking in their worst moments...

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

What about "Going Up The Country" by Canned Heat sounding like Kermit The Frog? Or is it just me?

Erick H (Erick H), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

examples can be found on the following tracks:

"pain is so close to pleasure" - queen
"automatic" - the pointer sisters.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Most effeminate non-falsetto male vocals are easily Green Gartside's.

Less sure about the other side of the coin, but Cher is surely a contender -- I like in the duet she did with Peter Cetera back in the day how he always takes the higher part when they sing together. (Hastily adding: this is the only thing about that song that I like or even remember clearly...)

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Thursday, 10 April 2003 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Kermit the Frog is, so far as I can remember, male?

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 10 April 2003 04:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Lindsey Buckinghaam

The Archbishop (Archbishop), Thursday, 10 April 2003 06:36 (twenty-two years ago)

annie lennox - most masculine voice. i remember clearly as a kid asking my brother -whos the man singing on this album?...

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 10 April 2003 07:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm surprised no-one's mentioned Horace Andy yet - not that I find his voice effeminate just very high and odd and lovely.

Dadaismus, Thursday, 10 April 2003 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Jimmy Scott <-- Gordon Sharpe --> Nina Simone

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 10 April 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

mark greaney of jj72. he sounds like a girly girl.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 10 April 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Masculine female vocals: Helen Shapiro and Grace Jones. I'll second Jennifer Herrema & Cher, though. When I first heard Royal Trux, I thought she was singing Neil's parts and vice versa. Same goes with Sonny & Cher.

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 10 April 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow! No-one's mentioned Chet Baker! (I think)

Also-Devendra Banhart sounds like a laydee.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 10 April 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

brian molko effeminate, sometimes

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 10 April 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd never really thought of Alison Moyet as sounding masculine. Husky, maybe? And mentioning her in the same sentence as Andy Bell? Eeeew.... sacrilege.

russ t, Thursday, 10 April 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I was going to saw that Gowan was undoubtedly the most effeminate male, but maybe he's more asexual.

I'd nominate Tracy Chapman as most masculine female. My mother actually though she was a man for a long time, due to her name and the indeterminate cover of her first album.

derrick (derrick), Friday, 11 April 2003 04:51 (twenty-two years ago)

John White of Mestar.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 11 April 2003 07:04 (twenty-two years ago)

What is wrong with you people? Have none of you heard David Surkamp, of '70s proggish band Pavlov's Dog? (ILM: "no, thank god") He made Yes's Jon Anderson sound like Barry White. Well, he didn't, but y'know. No man has ever got more of that "That's a man?!?" reaction.

Koko Taylor deserves a mention, though I don't know if you'd mistake her voice for a man's. It's got that raw, roaring thing like Howlin' Wolf or someone that is very rare in women.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I've thought Brian Molko was a woman three times in my life now. The first time, it was partly the voice. The third time he was on my block and I was sort of checking him out. Does anyone have any soap?

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 11 April 2003 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd never really thought of Alison Moyet as sounding masculine. Husky, maybe? And mentioning her in the same sentence as Andy Bell? Eeeew.... sacrilege.

Uh, wasn't there a lot of talk about Bell being selected for Erasure precisely because he sounded so much like Moyet?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 11 April 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Notwithstanding his ability to sound like Alison Moyet (thankfully he abandoned trying a long time ago), I don't agree that Andy Bell has a particularly feminine voice. I think his light tenor would fit quite comfortably into a Broadway musical. I can almost hear him sing 'Maria' in my head.

The male singer that actually sounds the most like a woman singer that I've heard is the Australian singer Paul Capsis. He does a drag show without drag. He's an amazingly androgynous person (he plays a cross-dressing character Johnny in the film Head On if you want confirmation). Apart from impersonating the usual suspects (Marlene, Judy and Dusty), he also sings as himself. I'm convinced that if you heard his voice on the radio you'd think it was a woman singing.

Amarga (Amarga), Friday, 18 April 2003 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Northern Soul then:

When I first heard Timi Yuro's 'It'll never be over for me' I believed she was some huge black chap bellowing away but no, she's a tiny white girl.

And Carl Carlton's 'So What', he sounds like a plump lady but he's this little kid (and singing about all these ladies who're after his arse, tut).

Could say the same for Frankie Lymon too, he sings a bit like a chubby ageing lady.
