Stereo Total: are, it's official, the best band in the world. I'm not putting it out on my label, so I can tell you unhypefully that their new album is Musique Automatique. The first single will be Liebe Zu Dritt ("Love With The 3 Of Us"). What do you call stereo when it's three way, anyway?

Momus, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Didn't Oasis devour the lamentable Heavy Stereo?

tarden, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

ah yes Nick, I'd forgotten about Stereo Total... look forward to this. Three way stereo? Impossible, I mean was quadraphonic 4 way stereo? no. Or double stereo? I think not. So three channel sound with the potential to be able to position sound (pan) between channels (and how would this work) is Tripliphonic, perhaps. (but we digress...)

the Apples in Stereo are quite pleasant.

Stereo in three way is called "menage et musique". Stereo total is nice indeed, very threatening . I notice they sound a bit like The Raincoats. Whats really nice about S total is they sound kind of new and unrepated despite their overused format choice of drums bass and guitars(oh and occaisionaly organ). They also at times remind me of Kurt Weil if he was in a band in Blade Runner. IN addition, I think there shoudl be a band called Stereofux.

Adventures in Stereo: Cool sound, uncool songs. er...

Stereo = classic, Adventures = dud

Can't think of any 'Stereo' band I like overmuch.

Back to Mono?

the pinefox, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Local bayarea band called Stereovisual, pretty good. Play power pop with some innovative post-rockish song structures. Lyrics range from twee to indecipherable, however.

Stereo doesn't necessarily mean two-channel, Nick. It comes from the Latin stereos, meaning 'solid' - translating, I suppose (for audio purposes), to 'three-dimensional sound'. Early stereo was three-channel and some folks still lament the passing of the 'real' centre channel (as opposed to the 'phantom' centre achieved by L-R phase jiggery-pokery) - I presume these people invest in home theatre systems and then dump the rear speakers in the garage.

Is there a worse band than the Stereophonics, I wonder?

DG, Wednesday, 11 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Stereo Total r00lz - I saw them 3 years ago at Other Music - Francoise Cactus brought in a snare drum, Bretzel (?) brought in his keys, and this strange chick who worked the door at Luna Lounge for awhile played guitar or something - with Real Songs that's all you need. They sent us all into ecstasies. "Let's.. GO.. to a Hol-i-day INN... And.. I.. will show you someTHIN!" The next night we caught them at Luna and they'd gotten friends of theirs to do a go-go strip show afterwards. ACE!

Anyone looking for 'Worst Band Ever' / 'Even Worse Than' nominations, I'll send you my ATP2001 programme and you can stick a pin in it.

Despite him being mean to me on ILE the other day, I agree with pinefox, for once.

"Movie star, oh, movie star ..."

Has never left me, and I've never heard it apart from one live performance, one of the nights of my life.
