What is the deal with Hip Hop?

Is the real hip hop dead or is it just a new era? As a culture we have come a long way from the bottom. Now we have new artist like the Ja Rule's and the Nelly's who want to sing and put the real old school flavor to hell. Now I love the Neptunes but their beats are a like to "sing alongish," they create good beats but people who sing should stick to R&B. Now as an artist and who has been following Hip Hop for the past 8-10 years, I am starting to be ashamed to even love this thing we call hip hop. Real Hip Hop lovers please stand up with me and take a stand against this R&B style of hip hop and bring it back to the essence.

Hip Hop's in Danger
Gotti

Gotti, Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

is that like when he was "the" batman for a brief period in the 40s?

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

it took me three readthroughs to figure out what the hell you were talking about jess.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

honestly i think that "real hip-hop" in gotti's terms is better off being out of the spotlight. there are people all over the world still making it, just not on MTV.

ron (ron), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

"fuck fashion, give me LOUD DRUMS": except, some of the loudest drums i've ever heard have been in the last four-six years

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i sing along to "Grindin" in the shower. KSH, KSH-KSH!
what do real hip hop fans even consider real hip hop anymore? i dont know but i think "Belly Dancer" is a great track.

Honda (Honda), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

All this talk of "real hip-hop"...would someone point me towards examples of fake hip-hop, so that I might possibly understand wtf?

(and I still don't know what jess is talking about)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Batman used to be THE Batman, just like Wile E. Coyote has from time to time employed use of Acme's wonderful Bat-Man outfit.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

haha i like the band name "The Nelly's"

james (james), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Ron summed it up perfectly - Hip Hops not in danger, its not even close. Hip hop and its close cousin R&B are doing what they wanna do, making cash for all and sundry. If this hurts people like Gotti then so be it, dont get hurt by simply switching off and like "why dont you" go find something less boring instead. As with everything there is a surface level and an underground (or Da underground if you are "down") put in the effort and discover that. Dont just fuckin whinge because the ja rule's playing Wembley.

Hip hop still rocks, still has plenty to offer and will thrive on many levels from here on.

james (james), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah the state of hiphop is pretty bad. The bling blingers with diva's crap has to go. There is some good hiphop still coming out like J-Live, 7L and Esoteric, Eyedea, Atmosphere, Blackalicious, J5, etc. but this is the minority

Ben Silver (Ben Silver), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I do miss the days of MC Hammer and Kris Kross

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

"Real hip hop" is apparently bigger than all these fake ass rekkids. Or so I hear.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Jody Seinfeld (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

On a sidenote, whatever happened to the massed invasion of gay rappers Hip Hop Connection was promising us around two years ago? Did they just get bored or something?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I love how people bitch about rappers doing singalong hooks and then invoke "the old school"--you know, when every rapper around did singalong hooks

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh baby pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase, you got what I need!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

My nigga my nigga my nigga!

nigga, Thursday, 10 April 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

There is no sense in this at all. The kind of stuff the questioner is denouncing includes some of the best music of recent years, and anyway there is loads and loads of tremendous hip hop of the kind he wants.
