Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

does this even make sense?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

hahahahaha!!!!

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

It's sort of like when Darth Vader cuts off Luke's hand at the end of the Empire Strikes Back.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

you mean indies will replaced by gloved animatronics?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

If Clearchannel is for real with this cutting off working with independent promoters, it could reasonably lead to a return to more diverse airplay. It prob'ly won't, but it could.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

this looks really, really cosmetic to me

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

It looks like they are cutting out the middleman, basically.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, if indies got replaced by animatronics, that'd be great. Robot Apples in Stereo!

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's a pretty big deal, on a certain level... the dominance of "indie" promoters has been a big criticism from all sides, including the labels, who complain that their hands are tied somehow (since they're forced to pay the promoters). Under the "indie" system, labels that can't afford to pay the promoters presumably have even less chance of getting songs on the radio than they would otherwise, etc...

I doubt radio will sound much better, though.

Sam J. (samjeff), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

The business of the independent promoter existed as a means of legal payola...record companies weren't allowed to pay radio stations to play their records, but they were allowed to pay independent promoters to "promote" their acts, and in turn these promoters were legally allowed to pay the radio stations as independent contractors, thus the old payola practice continued on legally. I'm hoping this means Clear Channel is ackowledging-and-leaving-behind their legal-only-thanks-to-loopholes $$$-for-airplay tactic. I'm also hoping this means, without them receiving, fr'instance, $100K a week for playing Creed 10 times a day (just a made-up statistic, btw), that maybe this decision, if not entirely cosmetic as Michaelangelo so elequently put it, might just be the doorway to much more thoroughly diversified playlists. But I'm a bloody horrid optimist.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Robot Apples in Stereo!

They'd be more dynamic on stage than the real thing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Next Clear Channel dictates what bands record albums directly to labels.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking, Noodles.
A more "hands-on" approach.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Less 'on,' more 'up'...something.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Horace is OTM but Ned's robbing him of the money so Horace is on OT and Ned just Money.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Noodles thinks Horace is OTM for agreeing w/ Noodles. Classic.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I just wanted to say Ned is Money really.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

He does sort of look like a trim Ben Franklin

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I bet CC winds up in court over this. If I remember correctly (and I admit I'm hazy on this) broadcasters tried to shut out the indies twenty-some years ago, and got nailed for collusion. Expect independent promoters to start bitching about restraint of trade, which will bring up those nasty accusations of Clear Channel monopoly again.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

They still got the farm leagues, I mean campus radio to hit up labels for cash.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

NEW YORK (Geuters) - Clear Channel Communications Inc. on Wednesday said it would cut out the middleman, and demand money directly from the record labels, saying the long-standing practice of hiding payola gives the appearance that they're trying to hide the fact that everyone knows it happens anyway.

Clear Channel, the top U.S. radio monopoly, has been a lightening rod for limiting listeners' musical choices, and for raking in the ca$hola as part of the deal.

In a statement, Clear Channel President and Chief Operating Officer Bark Bays said the company recognizes that "we could earn a whole lot more money shaking down the industry directly."

"Fuck all y'all," he said.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

He later added "Were my bitches at?!?" when questioned about his sudden break from the English language.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

(Geuters) - LOL!!!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's a pair of heretical ideas:
1) Do away with program directors. Hire competent DJ's who actually have taste and let them choose what to play.
2) Call in the 82 Airborne, the 1st Infantry, the Armored Cav and the rest and do a friggin Regime Change, overthrowing both ClearChannel, the RIAA and possibly a few of the crappier record labels as well.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

My record label can beat up your record label.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

There goes the last DJ that plays what he wants to play and says what he wants to say hey hey hey. < /surprisingly good tom petty>

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

The system worked a lot better when the cash went straight to the DJs.

Sean's fake wire report is OTM.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Seriously, we aren't going to see a resurgence of quality music on Clear Channel stations because of this.

CC are just trying to rid themselves of any semblance of impropriety. As it becomes more and more obvious that they are reaching monopoly status and continue to gain the attention of congressmen and major newspaper writers they will try to present themselves as squeaky clean.

Nobody in Clear Channel's programming department will spend much (if any) time actually listening to the songs they play, other than to stamp them as objectionable when the political climate demands it.

Focus-groups and demographics rule!

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey nick, you haven't seen my Voice piece, have you?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

He does sort of look like a trim Ben Franklin

One tries.
