From V2 Records. FYI.

Sasha Frere-Jones (Sasha Frere-Jones), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that good?

Andrew L (Andrew L), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Its probably good for V2, don't know about anyone else...

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 9 April 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

It's good for the rock, dude.

Adam A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

125,873 copies sold, only 3,000 more than the new Cher best-of. Still, impressive.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

that cd is incredible

in the cold cold night

Ben Silver (Ben Silver), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Can you really judge the Stripes by their record sales? If we could track downloads and burned copies, I would guess that their "market penetration" is stronger than that. Some of my students were talking about how much they like the disc, but only a couple actually purchased it.

Erick H (Erick H), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Meg gives good market penetration.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 9 April 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

>Some of my students were talking about how much they like the disc, but only a couple actually purchased it.

still, i think this is yet another trouncing of the RIAA's arguments against filesharing. just wait til "hail to the thief" comes out...

heywood jablomi, Wednesday, 9 April 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

But if you could track downloads and burned copies, you'd find that any act with an under-thirty fan base would have greater "market penetration" than shows up in Soundscan. Do you think there are more pirated White Stripes discs than 50 Cent or Eminem discs?

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't help but cheer these developments, but really,
why doesn't Jack White get a real band and do something?
He's released 4 interesting demos, and now I wanna hear
the real thing.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Keith, I agree with you completely...I was just reacting to some pent-up frustration at an article I read a few months ago discussing how The White Stripes/Strokes/Vines/etc. "movement" wasn't real due to the lack of album sales and platinum records. Under the circumstances, I think gold sales for "White Blood Cells" was quite an accomplishment.

Erick H (Erick H), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you think there are more pirated White Stripes discs than 50 Cent or Eminem discs?

Not a chance! Hip-hop gets pirated WAY more than rock.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Shame on you, Shakey Mo. Shame.

boldbury, Wednesday, 9 April 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

What Yanc3y said...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Just for the record, "Do you think there are more pirated White Stripes discs than 50 Cent or Eminem discs?" was meant to draw the answer "Of course not." I shoulda asked "Do you really think there are more pirated White Stripes discs...?" Or just said, "There sure aren't more pirated White Stripes discs than..."

There had to be a more succinct way to put that.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha 313phant.

I'm probably the last one to catch that.

Don't mind me.

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

you are not the only one andy k.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

How do we know hip hop is pirated more than rock?

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Jazzbo's got a point. I mean, I stole both.

Adam A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

oddly enough, I have had three white stripes albums dl'ed from me on soulseek in the last 4 hours. nobody is touching my hip-hop folders.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Thursday, 10 April 2003 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, the way you test it out is you go down to Chinatown, right. You walk up to them and say, "Yo, White Stripes?" and they'll be like, what? Then you go, "Yo, Jay-Z?" and they'll be like, "That will be $5." Then you do it again in Times Square. Then you have a scientific survey of who gets pirated more. Plus, two $5 CDs.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 10 April 2003 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

do you need a white lab coat to pull this off?

Mike Taylor (mjt), Thursday, 10 April 2003 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

That's EXACTLY what I was thinking of, Ally, when I wrote that.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 10 April 2003 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

You definitely need a lab coat. And goggles. Otherwise it's not scientific, yo.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 10 April 2003 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

word.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Thursday, 10 April 2003 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally is an extra from a Beastie Boys video = I worry.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 April 2003 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Please let it be Fight For Your Right.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 10 April 2003 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

By all means.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 April 2003 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

The Beasties were so much cooler when they dressed like Ethan and hit themselves in the head with bottles.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 10 April 2003 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

HOW DID EVERYTHING GO SO HORRIBLY WRONG?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 10 April 2003 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, this is a vision of the gods, thank ya Fritz. :-) Supergroup of ALL TIME.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 April 2003 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

my favourite detail in that photo is that diamond dave is wearing suspenders

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 10 April 2003 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

God, why did the Beastie Boys have to turn so weak and Tibetan and shit?

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 10 April 2003 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Because Kathleen Hanna made fun of them. And then they felt bad.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 10 April 2003 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck Kathleen Hanna, I'm making fun of them right here right now, they should feel horrible over this. Everyone knows internet message boards are the next Le Tigre.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 10 April 2003 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

when is you record coming out, Ally?

Mike Taylor (mjt), Thursday, 10 April 2003 03:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's slated for May 13th. Hydrahead's doing the vinyl. Rockin'.
