SONG PLACEMENT

Am I imagining things but is song #2 on a CD/LP/whatever, almost always better than the lead off song. And, is song 5 almost always one of the better songs on an album though the rest might be mediocre and that very few collections (even best of's) can make it past #7 at best?

I routinely put CDs in and skip directly to Track 2 without even thinking about what CD it is. Listening to horrible intro skits on Hip-Hop CDs probably put me in this habit as much as anything.

Track 2s are usually great. Track 5s too. When albums are too long, song 7 is the one during which that particular realization occurs. There are a million exceptions, but I've found this to be true.

The song 5 thing is the only one I have an explanation for (assuming it's a ten song album we're talking about) - some bands (like mine) still think in terms of side one and side two - you gotta end with a strong song at the end of side one so the listener feels compelled to turn the shit over!! everyone knows that

The best albums follow John Cusack's mix tape rules in High Fidelity. You start out with a real corker. Then you bring it up a notch. But you don't want to blow your wad all at once, so then you bring it down a notch. Et cetera.

There are many rules.

I love track seven man! I noticed this while making mixes, since I was taking track seven from so many different albums... and then completely out of the blue, a friend of mine told me how he usually loves track seven on his albums as well! Track seven 4evah, track five is weak and for squares.

the odd numbered tracks >1 are the winners. #3, 5 and 7 are where the action is at.

since we're already far past the point of banal here - any thoughts on the last song?

yea i was thinking the same thing, roger. what about the last song ?? i have some shitty albums with maybe two good songs and the last song is always one of those two.

I thought about the Side 2 thing... but does it really come into consideration when making "straight to CD" music? I guess it may.
The thought had come to me when I was walking back from work theother day. I had JD's Unknown Pleasures on the CD player. After the short lull, She's Lost COntrol came on.... what a great song... I remember (I hope correctly) that it opened side two of the LP.

Sometimes, but not often I have found these days, that the last track can be a winner. Like I said in my opening statement, as you get down the line on many CDs these days... at least the ones I have been listenintg to, the songs have been getting weaker and weaker...
Are bands just putting too many songs on their albums or what?

and sometimes the first track is the only song worth listening to ? i'm sure we all own many of those. i have noticed several times when I a buy a CD for one song, that song is, more often than not, the leadoff track.
