Does Fame Really Come from these sorts of things?

Alright, answer me this little riddle. I'm an avid DJ, mix decks, record shop connoisseur, and groupies (well not yet anyway) and so last week I'm reading about one of the few remaining music magazines that's actually good (M8 Magazine) and read about this new Search for a DJ competition which Kiss FM and Tunes are running. In layman's terms, me and a mate would get to win a week's holiday in Ibizia and I would get to play a two hour set at Eden. If anyone's been to Eden you would know it's not the Hippodrome of Ibiza, more like C.R.E.A.M or Homelands when they're playing London-but anyway, getting back to the point. Play with Brandon Block, Boy George, and Alex P from Kiss. I want to know whether these sorts of things actually work, or whether they're just little teasers from music makers to basically tell wannabees like me of the life that we could be living, does anyone know of any DJ's that actually got their big break through one of these competitions, is it worth me sending in one of my many mix tapes? http://www.kissonline.co.uk

Send in a tape. If it isnt your big break its a week in ibizia mixing with the famous.

Send in a tape, what have you got to lose except a blank tape and a stamp?

More sucessful though seem to be smaller scale dj comps. I have friends in sheffield into the Hard House/House/Trance Club thing who have gone into smalle competitions and have got regular gigs on the back of them even got to play back rooms at Gatecrasher and Bed. Also do lots of houseparties if only for practice at mixing under pressure.

This is of course not how I got into Djing. Different styles of music but this is how it happened... Bloke taps me on the shoulder in a club and says, 'I see you at all of the nights round here, wanna come play some tunes' I'd never really djed up to then so I just said tyeah and kind of learnt on the job, I had the tunes just not the skills at the beginning, I still don't really have the skills, but people seem to like me and I've got to open for all sorts of amazing people, or play in back rooms opposite amazing people. And after this year's break (studying abroad) i hope to go back and spin some more.

I'm always suspiscious when people try to make musicians rich and famous because all they really want is for you to be their whore as they get fat.
