maria b (maria b), Thursday, 10 April 2003 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Black Dice rules, fool.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 10 April 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I saw them live, they suck ass

Millar (Millar), Friday, 11 April 2003 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

especially opening for Godspeed You! Black Emperor. They really did look like a joke (and not a funny one)

Millar (Millar), Friday, 11 April 2003 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

No, but dude, I saw them live too, and they're awesome.

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 11 April 2003 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

YES BUT YOU'RE A FAT WEEZER FAGGOT WITH NO TASTE

RESPECT IS DUE

Jon Williams (ex machina), Friday, 11 April 2003 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, um, Black Dice suck some serious ass.

maria b (maria b), Friday, 11 April 2003 06:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course, I mean that in the most un-ALL CAPS way possible.

maria b (maria b), Friday, 11 April 2003 06:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Godspeed made me giggle once, so they win

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 11 April 2003 06:49 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i heard the black dice album it was pretty awful. although i wouldnt mind seeing them anyway ??!

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 11 April 2003 06:57 (twenty-two years ago)

NONE OF YOU UNDERSTAND. GO WANK OVER YOUR BLOGS

schnellschnell, Friday, 11 April 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

DEAR LIVEJOURNAL,

I AM UNHAPPY.

CURRENT MOOD: SAD
CURRENT MUSIC: DASHBOARD CONFESSIONALS

Jon Williams (ex machina), Friday, 11 April 2003 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, except that Black Dice suck ass.

you said that so smugly that your face contorted and now you look like ruby wax

snake assassin, Friday, 11 April 2003 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't get Black Dice at all.
*he said while listening to "glory hole" by Nurse With Wound*

Arab on Radar are by far more fun, too bad dem calling it a day and ol dat.

rex jr., Friday, 11 April 2003 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh dear. Well, I'm sitting on the fence, but I'd be VERY interested to see them live (hence the title of this thread!).

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 11 April 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh, I'm just an American, but isn't the UK in Europe? (per thread title)

Nick A. (Nick A.), Friday, 11 April 2003 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Black Dice and AOR don't sound very much alike.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Friday, 11 April 2003 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh, I'm just an American, but isn't the UK in Europe? (per thread title)

Depends on your perspective, Nick A.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 11 April 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, well from someone who's perspective is that the UK isn't in Europe, what is their perspective on where it is?

Nick A. (Nick A.), Friday, 11 April 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure they were making a point of saying they'll be playing the mainland and the UK....

Also, a lot of UK kids I met seemed to not really consider themselves part of "europe" as a whole.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Friday, 11 April 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I think this is probably for a whole other thread. But...maybe it's just me- being in the UK, when I say "Europe" I am referring to mainland Europe or "the continent". I realise that this doesn't, in fact, make much sense. But there you go. It also has a lot to do with politics, and the EU, and a joint European currency, etc.

But essentially you're right, yes. Let's hope Black Dice realise this, too.

Oh, Jon just crossposted sumthin similar.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 11 April 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Might I add that the Deerhoof "European" tour did not touch down on these shores?

And did you know that, wherever you are in the UK, you are never more than an hour's drive to the sea?

Except that's not true. We have traffic issues.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 11 April 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I know, I'm just being silly. Sorry to derail the thread. I want to see Black Dice, but I live in the US. Oh well.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Friday, 11 April 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

so will black dice just recreate the whole of beaces & canyons live (which would be heart fuckingly amazing) or can we expect any surprises?

schnellschnell, Friday, 11 April 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I know, I'm just being silly. Sorry to derail the thread. I want to see Black Dice, but I live in the US. Oh well.

I'd say you could stay with me Nick, but the London show's on a Friday night, and my girlfriend just wouldn't stand for it.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 11 April 2003 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

schnellschnell, I'd prefer some surprises.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 11 April 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

what would be a REAL surprise would be if they owned up to being a moonlighting screamo band and played some shit off of their VERMIN SCUM and GRAVITY 7"s.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 11 April 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread reminds me of the Black Dice thread that I created last month... asking everyone what the big deal was... can't say that anyone's convinced me yet that Beaches and Canyons is anything but another meander-fest lacking resolution. It's not that I hate them, it's just that I don't see how they stand far enough apart from anyone else to merit the recent cult hype. And for the Arab On Radar recommendation... I second that - much more interesting band. Deerhoof as well.

maria b (maria b), Friday, 11 April 2003 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Black Dice were so pathetic that I called up my old pal, who now teaches 5th grade in DC, on my cell phone, standing in the middle of the concert, and I told him 'listen to this' and held the phone up for a little while. Then I put it back to my ear and asked him 'WHY THE FUCK DON'T WE HAVE A BAND YET' and he's all 'I DON'T KNOW, REHEARSAL SPACE MAYBE' and I think I might have conceded on that point, but a better answer given the circumstances would have been 'WHAT REHEARSAL'. My pal and I were in a improv-noise trio back in college (which became a duo very quickly). Shit, if we had half the presumption and ego these Black Dice types have, we'd be touring fucking Europe, apparently. No, really, I have an analog delay and everything. I mean it's not like anything they do even requires a smidgen of experimentalism anymore, you just plug shit in and beat on it and twist the delay knob. Fuck off, right? But they're going to Europe and I work for the Man.

I guess that's what we get for being so devoted to short-sighted pragmatism.

Millar (Millar), Friday, 11 April 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

that's really great millar, i've never heard that story before

zemko (bob), Friday, 11 April 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I could tell it again on another thread, as long as it's about the black dice

Millar (Millar), Friday, 11 April 2003 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha boy do I have sour grapes or what? I'm not even drunk.

Millar (Millar), Friday, 11 April 2003 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I was a bit surprised at what they sounded like when they opened for Godspeed in Detroit. Started out like the noodle-y parts of BEACHES & CANYONS (or a Dead "Dark Star" performance) and ended up morphing into a proto-acid house jam. I liked it quite a bit.

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Friday, 11 April 2003 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

fuck them

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 11 April 2003 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

the single-handedly made the dfa mix not absolutely perfect.

I am glad I am not the only one who thinks the guys suck a tremendous amount of ass.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Saturday, 12 April 2003 01:28 (twenty-two years ago)

HEY A KELLY OSBOURNE THREAD CALLED AND IT WANTS YOU GUYS THERE

Jon Williams (ex machina), Saturday, 12 April 2003 07:20 (twenty-two years ago)

aww... wanna cry about it?

maria b (maria b), Saturday, 12 April 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Shit, if we had half the presumption and ego these Black Dice types have, we'd be touring fucking Europe, apparently.

You also need the Williamsburg hypemachine to back you up.

j.lu (j.lu), Saturday, 12 April 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish I never started this thread. *sob*

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Saturday, 12 April 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

CAN SOMEONE GIVE A BETTER REASON FOR DISLIKING BLACK DICE OTHER THAN "UM THEY'RE FROM A HIP PART OF NEW YORK UM"

schnellschnell, Saturday, 12 April 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i really can't wait, and no po faced, sour grape munching 'critics' will spoil my fun

schnellschnell, Saturday, 12 April 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm looking forward to seeing 'em play in the UK - makes a change from all the homegrown tosspots we usually have to put up w/

Andrew L (Andrew L), Saturday, 12 April 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

well yeah, I can't wait for whenever lighting bolt turn up too.

and no neck blues band. and borbetomagus (ha!).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 12 April 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you going to see Sunny Murray on Thursday, Julio?

Borbetomagus played London 2 or 3 years ago, but I misssed 'em, rats.

Totally agree abt NNCK.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Saturday, 12 April 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

where andrew? (I haven't picked up the new wire yet).

i've just emailed the borbeto website asking them when they were going to come here to play (after listening to snuff jazz).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 12 April 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.zen14205.zen.co.uk/murray03.html

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 12 April 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

yes I will.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 12 April 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Black Dice are a waste of Hisham's drumming.
As for Arab on Radar.... The Chinese Stars are good.

Dave Fischer, Saturday, 12 April 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

it's about time wolf eyes sailed across the atlantic as well

schnel;l, Sunday, 13 April 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

and harry pussy (just been listening to a 7' of theirs). for fuck's sake come here and play a show!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 13 April 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Are Harry Pussy still around? Cool. They played KUCI once and were shyly noisy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 13 April 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

heh. well I don't actually know. but i have been listening to 7' and ride a dove yesterday and i do want to see something like that in this country.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 14 April 2003 08:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Julio-Tell me more about No Neck Blues Band - I have been very intrigued by them for some time.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 14 April 2003 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

nordic- I've done a post on them on this thread (plenty of debate there too):

Who on this.... bastard... loves No Neck Blues Band?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 14 April 2003 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

black dice changed musical direction? what a bunch of fakers. they're touring europe while you can't even book rehearsal space? the nerve! they live in williamsburg? talentless, obviously.
jeez.
it's been a while since i've seen a proper gig, but i saw an impressive short set at the swiss institute in nyc this past winter. they did a really hypnotic dubby, groovy, pop-from-another-planet kind of thing, and on the strength of that i think that you're justified in celebrating their trip over!

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 14 April 2003 10:19 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.kamele.com/Images/A-champagne.jpg
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lauren, I kiss you.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 14 April 2003 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

aw, shucks.
with black dice, oneida, and sightings all coming over, you're in for an interesting and enjoyable month.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 14 April 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

sightings??? when und where?

schnell===schnell, Monday, 14 April 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Jah! When und where? Motorik fur alle!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 14 April 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Lauren, you don't work for jagjaguwar, do you? (just curious?)

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 14 April 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

sightings need to tour intra before inter... :-(

i've only seen black dice once (14 months ago at ATP) and they were mesmerizing live (on a day FULL of mesmerizing... Bride of No No, Merzbow, Dead C, etc.). i was so-so on them before that (hadn't heard the "new direction" yet).

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 14 April 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't work for jagjag.
as for sightings, i think they'll be over at the beginning of may doing some u.k. dates with a swedish band. i can probably post dates within a few days.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

You don't work for jagjag. But you know stuff. You're like some kinda crazy indie-rock oracle! The squigglecore Ask Jeeves!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Sightings are touring with new load labelmates Noxagt, which should be righteous. Bring on the heaviosity! Yo Adam, where's my Fog CDR?!

Nathan Webb (Nathan Webb), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

''Sightings are touring with new load labelmates Noxagt, which should be righteous''

are they supposed to be playing at the spitz in london? if so, when?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio, just checked the Big Smoke website and they say 16th May.

Nathan Webb (Nathan Webb), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

OK thanks.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Nathan-Sorry, I sent it out today. I have been crap, yes.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Adam, that's grrreat.

Nathan Webb (Nathan Webb), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

can i use the squigglecore ask jeeves thing on my business cards?

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

''Sightings are touring with new load labelmates Noxagt, which should be righteous''

are they supposed to be playing at the spitz in london? if so, when?

Question of the moment. Answers, anyone?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 09:41 (twenty-two years ago)

''Julio, just checked the Big Smoke website and they say 16th May.''

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Oops. tx, Julio.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 10:08 (twenty-two years ago)

its OK. might see you there.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Indeed. I'm hopefully going to spring some cash for that and Black Dice.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 10:24 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah. may is looking terrific for gigs.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 11:02 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
so, is anyone going to this? i haven't got a ticket but it hasn't sold out, so i'm planning to turn up & pay on the door.

toby (tsg20), Monday, 5 May 2003 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

so am I. i'll see you there.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 5 May 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

cool. does anyone know what time it starts/whether the support bands are any good?

toby (tsg20), Monday, 5 May 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry but where is the garage? (tube and directions from it. nordicz told me but i've forgotten)

its w/ Part Chimp & Crescent whom i don't know abt. its a 7:30 start.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 5 May 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

it's on highbury corner. nearest tube highbury & islington, i guess.

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 05:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Guys! I'm going, I think - I'll prob be there with my friend Paul aka Chuck Tatum ( a very occasional poster to ILE/ILF). It's opposite Highbury & Islington tube. I've seen Part Chimp before - They are compared to The Melvins & Jesus Lizard a lot, which is fair enough. They are my kind of thing, don't know if they are yours (?). A strange choice to warm up for Black Dice.

I'll look out for the both of you!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 08:43 (twenty-two years ago)

oh great just oposite the tube station! brilliant. I'll see you all there.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 09:11 (twenty-two years ago)

So who went in the end? It was pretty amazing no? A bit short and not enough disjointed yelping, but the second part they did that was like a 10 minute gabba noise jam was fucking incredible; Hisham Baroocha was a revelation.

Part Chimp were fucking terrible, horrible name and a horrible sub-NoU schtick to go with it.

ss, Thursday, 8 May 2003 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought it was pretty good but not amazing. the first band on were terrible (julio and i stayed at the bar for that). my ears hurt afterwards. the black dice stuff didn't sound all that different from the album to me...

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 8 May 2003 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Really? I thought it was almost a complete sonic departure from the album.

ss, Thursday, 8 May 2003 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

it was OK but not 'amazing'. I liked the way they broke whatever grooves they were making and then how it would start again (I haven't heard any of their recs before).

my ears didn't hurt at all but Toby was a bit closer to the stage than I was.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 8 May 2003 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The No Neck Blues Band will be touring Europe and the UK from May 14th through the 24th. For dates and other information visit----
