that's the trick, it's a good song, and then really awful sounds just come along and have to ruin it for me, eg lots and lots of Neptunes/Timbaland productions of late

Millar (Millar), Friday, 11 April 2003 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

it's very indie

jess, my guess would be those individuals who appreciate timbre in music as much as composition.

the best example of this sort of thing is the "orchestra stab" especially when played as an arpeggio

also, lots of cool-ass synth timpani

Both of Honda's examples are exactly the reasons I want to start collecting firearms

When pianists use, like, a piano to play, like piano notes without using anything other than the pedals to change the texture - C/D?

C'mon, it's an instrument, for fuck's sake - you can't blame people for using what it has to offer, just like you can't blame the vast majority of pianists for *not* throwing found objects onto the strings, or sticking knives into the works at random intervals, or any other Sonic Youth/Boomian con/destructive techniques.

funnily enough i've just been messing around with the Pizz Strings sound on my Yamaha CS1x - its actually the best synthesized string sound on there probably. as a piece of kit its a bit out of date tho - nice warm pads and ok drums but thats about it

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 April 2003 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i love the flanged string on Jay-Z's 'Excuse Me Miss' - its so sprawling and decadent, not sure where it comes from tho

I don't mind GM presets in hip-hop/dance music nearly as much as in pop music for some reason. Like, with the knowledge in the back of my head that a six-digit dollar amount was used to produce a track, I feel ripped off when they couldn't be bothered to use an ACTUAL piano, nor even a patch with any sort of dynamics or somesuch....UGH. (I'm "ugh"ing at YOU Michelle Branch in particular.)
