MORE DANCEHALL!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 April 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Umm, some tracks on some old Bloodrock and Bedlam albums I have laying around need to be sampled.

Also, "Winds of Change" by the Animals.

Damn I can't believe I'm giving away my beatz.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 11 April 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

alex hip-hop IS dancehall now...havent you been listening to the radio?

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 11 April 2003 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

or maybe it's vice versa

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 11 April 2003 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes! But there can never be enough, Jess!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 April 2003 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Ahhhh! Finally!

"A Few Hours After This" by The Cure! I am SO RIGHT ON THIS!

I always wanted to write a balet based on this song featuring a bunch of staff weaving among one another behind the bar of an English village pub. I still think it'd work magnificently, though I have no idea how to annotate dance moves.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 11 April 2003 08:26 (twenty-two years ago)

"Once In A Lifetime-Talking Heads. Anyone done this yet? The beats are already there!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 11 April 2003 08:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Bassheads used the tinkly bit off "Once In A Lifetime" on their fanfuckintastic classic breakbeat/raveish tune "Is There Anybody Out There", many moons ago - along with Pink Floyd (apparently) and Afrika Bambaata as I recall.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 11 April 2003 08:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I went to see Cradle 2 The Grave recently, because, you know, I paid money for some tickets and it seemed a waste not to.

Anyway, yeah, get through to the credits. The soundtrack credits. Rappers nowadays are sampling Cake and CKY, for fuck's sake. Wussupwitdat?

And, in answer to the question, "Next" by the Sensational Alex Harvey Band, and it should be sampled by Ill Bill or Necro or one of those other weird-fuck US rappers that can't actually rap but do know a large variety of offensive slang terms for homosexuals, so it's OK.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 11 April 2003 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Wolfgang Ambros, "Denk Amoi". As hard and as unlikely as the "Crazy Horses".

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 11 April 2003 09:14 (twenty-two years ago)

she bop

Evan (Evan), Friday, 11 April 2003 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I think they should sample more classical music. Those samples from classical works that were fashionable for a short while back in 1997-98 brought a much needed melodic and harmonic dimension to hip-hop.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 11 April 2003 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Whatever happened to A+ anyway?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 11 April 2003 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

KC Flightt used 'Once In A Lifetime' on 'Planet E' back in '89/'90

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 April 2003 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i think Ugly Duckling should use the theme from The Two Ronnies

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 April 2003 10:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Autechre's 'Amber' album would sound good with some hip hop lyrics over it here and there

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 April 2003 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Ugly Duckling should re-enact "Four candles/fork handles" as a skit on their next album.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 11 April 2003 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I think they should sample more classical music.

Non-Phixion's "Futurama" and "The CIA Is Trying to Kill Me" use string samples extremely effectively...very gritty and damned-near frightening production.

Blackalicious' "The Sky Is Falling" uses an actual string section & strongly Euro-classical-influenced vocal harmonies (and chord changes!?!? yes) in a very powerful way...that song gives me goosepimples all over.

As for samples, instead of recommending a sample, I'm gonna go back in time and STOP Crazytown from sampling the Chili Peppers' "Pretty Little Ditty" which is a groove they DO NOT DESERVE...and then that sample will be free for someone to use PROPERLY.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 11 April 2003 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

what orchestral piece does Pharaoh Monche's 'Simon Says' use again?

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 April 2003 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

folk implosion - E.Z.L.A

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 11 April 2003 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

can-the fourth track (i think)of eges bayami or whatever its called

robin (robin), Friday, 11 April 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

if you speed "mushroom" up it makes really cute-creepy ambient drum and bass with damo sounding like a cartoon kitten

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 11 April 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

The first 10 seconds or so of Horace Andy's 'Rome'. Come on, it's a complete beat already, you don't even have to EQ/compress the drums or anything.

oops (Oops), Friday, 11 April 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

the bassline from 'hallelwah' would be perfect, but unfortunately i can only envisage anticon sampling this

actually the only anticon song i can bare samples tubeway army's 'in the park' which is nice

schnellschnell, Friday, 11 April 2003 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

MORE DANCEHALL!
alex hip-hop IS dancehall now...havent you been listening to the radio?

I agree but I'm talkin' bout the narrowest definition of dancehall, ie Junjo Lawes stuff from early 80s. Scientist is still around so you could even have him mix/engineer it.

oops (Oops), Friday, 11 April 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

The drum break on Japan's "Visions of China" -- PWEI did it years ago but nobody knows about it, therefore it is ripe for use.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 April 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

the best thing about "the black hit of space" is that it works both ways...if you clean it up a bit you have the neptunes and if you leave it alone you have an el-p track with an actual beat

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 11 April 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

the insane percussion break in the middle of E.L.O.'s "So Fine," where the strings come in really tentatively on that rising two-note figure

Neudonym, Friday, 11 April 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

B-b-but Geir won't be satisfied until hip-hop producers sample classical music, and then remove all that rapping and backbeat stuff.

A lot of JA dancehall seems much more minimal (and often faster) than the examples of contemporary hip-hop with dancehall influence.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 11 April 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yes and please sample Emperor.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 11 April 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yes and please sample Emperor Franz Josef in Amadeus*: "Too...many...notes."

*Played by Jeffrey Jones. Oh boy.

Neudonym, Friday, 11 April 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Miles Davis' "Circle in the Round" especially the bassline.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 11 April 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Human League must've taken The Black Hit of Space from Rumpofsteelskin anyway so, you know, continue the cycle.

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Friday, 11 April 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

"Once in a Lifetime" was sampled, I forget by who, in the late '80s I think.

I don't think "Born Under Punches" has, though. Off the top of my head, I'd add:

I'd love to hear one of those guitar riffs by the Sonics sampled
Minutemen: "Search"
The Clash: "Train In Vain"
anything off of Syliphone Discotheque 71 Guinee
any juju
more go-go
more dub
anything off of The Heptones and Friends, Vol. 1 & 2
Rebirth Brass Band: "Take It to the Street"
any New Orleans brass band music
Tar Babies: "More Salt"
I'm sure this has been sampled, but I haven't heard it: Aaron Neville: "Hercules"
Public Image Ltd.: "Graveyard"

Pete Scholtes, Friday, 11 April 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

"Once in a Lifetime" was sampled, I forget by who, in the late '80s I think

If it's the guy I'm thinking of, he not only sampled it but had David Byrne in his video doing the chorus as well!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

"playaaas...only LOOOOVE YOU when they're plaaaaaayin'......"

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Public Image Ltd.:"Albatross" (if only for that bassline)

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Saturday, 12 April 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

The music for the beginner's maze in Marble Madness.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 12 April 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeez, people.
"Once In A Lifetime" was sampled by JAY-Z.
Personally, I think more producers need to sample prog -
I've heard classic Vangelis and Genesis sampled with beautiful
results.

Squirl Plise, Saturday, 12 April 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

No, it wasn't that one -- like Pete says, this was ten plus years ago.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 12 April 2003 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

The Clash: "Train In Vain"

Garbage are not hip-hoppers, but still.
"The Call-Up", on the other hand...

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 13 April 2003 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Peter Gabriel -- intro riff from "I Don't Remember"
Gary Numan -- "Down in the Park"
ambient techno, like Ultramarine or Scorn

Clarke B., Sunday, 13 April 2003 05:39 (twenty-two years ago)

This is the man you're thinking of, who sampled 'Once in a lifetime'. KC Flightt of Planet E fame.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 13 April 2003 08:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Gary Numan -- "Down in the Park"

It was done in Restiform Bodies' "Third Reel Judy Garland". Sort of a waste, though, since it's Anticon at its most lyrically whatthefuckest.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 13 April 2003 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

"Born Under Punches" was sampled in a little song called "Where My Ballz At" by, I believe, 1108 Thugz. The results weren't as great as you'd expect.

Adam A. (Keiko), Sunday, 13 April 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

goddamit i mentioned KC Flight ages upthread!

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 13 April 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Gil Scott-Heron - The Revolution Will Not Be Televised
Gil Scott-Heron - The White Man's Got a God Complex
William S. Burroughs - A One God Universe

David Allen, Sunday, 13 April 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Climax Blues Band, "Couldn't Get It Right"
Barry De Vorzon, "Warriors Title Theme"

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 13 April 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

re Gary Numan and hip-sampling: you folks do know that ILM's main man Ma$e sampled "cars," yes?

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 20 April 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Marley Marl sampled 'Cars' on Kool G Rap's first album in, like, '89.

oops (Oops), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I have maintained for years that the Calvery Cross by Richard Thompson needs sampling. When the "mmmm"s come in, it's a scary and needs someone to talk over it.
