Tales From The Australian Underground

Born Out Of Time

Do The Pop!

Can't Stop It!

Four outstanding compilations of Australian rock and roll, pop, new wave and post-punk. Basically this has been 90% of my listening over the last couple of months and goddamit if it isn't the best thing my ears could imagine right now.

That's all. Just wanted to share.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 11 April 2003 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Oooh! Cheers for the info Jim!

Bill E (bill_e), Friday, 11 April 2003 03:01 (twenty-two years ago)

and if you like any of that then please have a look at http://www.users.bigpond.com/pturnbul/nns_band.htm for a comprehensive view of the sydney experimental scene at that time (including 4 of the bands from "tales" and a lot of the bands from "can't stop it").

i've also got a swag of home remastered vinyl and cassette, unreleased studio recordings and high quality live boots of these bands listed at http://www.users.bigpond.com/pturnbul/nns_reissues.htm which i'm willing to copy if you'd like to trade.

phil turnbull (philT), Friday, 11 April 2003 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

actually Phil i was looking at your page as you were posting this :)

I would sell my soul for some of the stuff you've got there! Would love to trade - what sort of stuff would you be after in return?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 11 April 2003 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

onya jim. just got do the pop myself.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 11 April 2003 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

ooh, the whole primitive calculators LP+7"...everyone needs volume one, then.

your null fame (yournullfame), Friday, 11 April 2003 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

the other impressive thing is out of the 137 tracks these comps make up in total, only 11 tracks are duplicates.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 11 April 2003 04:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Do The Pop really is fantastic. Only paid $20 for it too, bargain.

Hayden Nicholls (Pop the Weasel), Friday, 11 April 2003 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

What, no Men At Work?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 11 April 2003 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

ho ho ho

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 11 April 2003 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

jim - sent an email to your hotmail address - email me (minus xxxx) if that's no good.

phil turnbull (philT), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
Just curious if the rest of the stuff by The Particles is as good as their track on Can't Stop It? The sleeve notes say they only did three records, but Apricot's Dream is great and makes me wonder if I should try to hunt them down or not.

svend (svend), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 04:25 (twenty years ago)

i've been trying to get hold of the Particles 45s but always get outbid on them. considering most things Stephen O'Neil has been involved with are pretty good i'd reckon there's a good chance the singles would be worth hunting down.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 04:34 (twenty years ago)

ahh this thread makes me nostalgic for the time that the guy who runs f33l presents sent me a very narky email

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 04:35 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for the info. Seem pretty obscure, but it gives me some new band to hunt down stuff for until someone reissues their stuff.

svend (svend), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 04:47 (twenty years ago)

The Particles played at our school once.

When is Vol 2 of 'Tales...' coming out? Shouldn't be too far away by now surely.

thee music mole, Wednesday, 23 February 2005 05:40 (twenty years ago)

apparently it's "nearly finished"

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 05:42 (twenty years ago)

i totally love the sound of that 'tales' one! i just tried to order it online and the site said it would email me the ordering details but it hasn't :( but i just checked the catalogue of 78s and they can get it in for me though.

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 05:42 (twenty years ago)

the tracklisting is outstanding. elements of the package were slightly disappointing IMO but overall it's completely worth buying. hearing songs like "govt boy" and "horizontal action" for the first time was a complete revelation.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 05:52 (twenty years ago)

i didn't really understand the ordering process - it asked for my postal address and what sort of credit card i would use (but not the number), then said it would email me details of what to do, but hasn't - how odd. i don't imagine they would send out the cds before getting the credit card details? i think i'll just go into 78s and ask them to order it. i want it right now though!

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 05:54 (twenty years ago)

There should still be copies in the indie shops gem.

(x-post) Amen to that, both tracks. Horizontal Action = TUUUNE

Looking forward to hopefully hearing some feedtime on the next one.

thee music mole, Wednesday, 23 February 2005 05:55 (twenty years ago)

yesyesyes some feedtime pretty please

and some wkosa.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 05:58 (twenty years ago)

they must have raided my record collection to make those comps

mentalist (mentalist), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 06:05 (twenty years ago)

half your luck

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 06:05 (twenty years ago)

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 06:06 (twenty years ago)

god that's a record collection that dreams are made of

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 06:09 (twenty years ago)

needs more THUG

haitch (haitch), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 06:24 (twenty years ago)

... exclude Can't Stop It from that, most of that material is completely foreign to me

mentalist (mentalist), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 06:32 (twenty years ago)

can't stop it is me favourite...the rest seem to be a little nostalgic (great though!)

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 06:36 (twenty years ago)

i think the nostalgia is what got me so excited about that tales one. aaaaah sneaking out of boarding school to see ed kuepper at the shents hotel. which is now an old people's home.

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 06:37 (twenty years ago)

hahaha how apt!

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 06:38 (twenty years ago)

the other pub where i used to go and see bands like this is an old folks home too - the swanbourne hotel. fondly known as the swanny! seems a bit sad really :(

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 06:40 (twenty years ago)

the first gig i ever went to was Died Pretty at the Sydney Trade Union Club (or was it the Graphic Arts Club), must have been about 15 or 16, Ron Peno was a ... revelation to an innocent

mentalist (mentalist), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 06:42 (twenty years ago)

fuck yeah.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 06:44 (twenty years ago)

the first "inner city gig" i went to was mi-sex at the stage door tavern circa 79. it was too loud (boohoo) and chicks was throwing up.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 06:46 (twenty years ago)

we pulled cones in the park next to central.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 06:47 (twenty years ago)

died pretty was one of the first gigs i went to as well! i was about 13/14 and they were supporting hunters & collectors at the bunbury rec centre. the licensed area (one basketball court) was separated from the underager basketball court with chicken wire. i threw up that night too, but fortunately not at the concert.

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 06:51 (twenty years ago)

if ya never chucked ya was neva there

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 06:55 (twenty years ago)

and now citadel HAVE emailed me! thanks electric sound for alerting me to this nostalgia extravaganza!

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 06:55 (twenty years ago)

i'll have to go down the bottlo and buy some bundy and cola udls and don a shirt with shoulderpads to try and recreate the full sensory experience when the cds arrive

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 06:56 (twenty years ago)

haha!

lets all synchronise! i have a silverthread millers shirt here somewhere...

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 06:58 (twenty years ago)

and a black tshirt with a picture of deniz tek

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 06:59 (twenty years ago)

it doesn't take much, does it? ;-)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 07:00 (twenty years ago)

very little

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 07:04 (twenty years ago)

i'll let you know when it gets here so we can have a national reminiscence marathon! my stems tshirt is prob a bit threadbare/faded but should still fit

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 07:05 (twenty years ago)

a copy of the psycho surgeons went for $660 on ebay the other day

maybe i should sell mine! the blood on the cover is a deep, dark brown these days. it's weird that they took so long to be anthologised because they were the epitomy of US mid-west style punk attitude at the time (in inner sydney).

csi2 - tracklist pretty much finalised

also - clinton walker's (well 50% him, 50% other writers) fantastic book - "inner city sound" is being re-released in the US soon and a 2 cd comp will be put out to accompany that.

phil turnbull (philT), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

That's great, I've read the book but you need a soundtrack to go with it.

thee music mole, Wednesday, 23 February 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

niiiice

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 04:00 (nineteen years ago)

i wonder what happened to can't stop it vol 2

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 04:07 (nineteen years ago)

lil' merzbow wow (haitch), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 04:09 (nineteen years ago)

Primitive Calculators - Pumping Ugly Muscle

Looking forward to hearing that one again.

ratty, Tuesday, 30 May 2006 04:44 (nineteen years ago)

isn't it on pigs arse?

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 04:47 (nineteen years ago)

australians really do come up with some indescribably brilliant band names

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 05:49 (nineteen years ago)

Happy Hate Me Nots 'Salt, Sour & Brighton' is a yummy song. They played a reunion show a few months ago and will betouring around the place soon.

m3ntal1st, Tuesday, 30 May 2006 05:54 (nineteen years ago)

Is it on Pig's Arse? Well I'm an idiot then - I should've known that, I've played the CD often enough.

ratty, Tuesday, 30 May 2006 06:05 (nineteen years ago)

track 17!

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 06:07 (nineteen years ago)

Can't Stop It Vol. 2 has its track listing finalised, apparnetly waiting on artists to write their own little descriptions for each artists? Every time I see Mr. Blackman of Chapter Records I ask the prerequesite "so whens Volume 2 coming out?" - the Use No Hooks song on the comp is amazing (the rest of the comp hopefully includes "The Crush" by Asphixiation along with stuff by (early punkish) SPK, early Severed Heads (the version of "Petrol" with the girl from Pel Mel or whomever singing) Nouvo Bloc, The Systematics, and more...? Not sure...?)

Personally speaking I don't find the Tales From The Australian Underground series that good, whilst there are some choice selections across both volumes they are too broad (for my tastes) and fall into areas of music which really don't interest me. Ie. the more rockier, post 1983 sort of stuff which gets a bit scary and hairy. Same problem that was the case (for me anyway) with the Inner City Sounds CD. They really are "post-punk" in presenting all the sorts of music that happened "after" the initial punk explosion as opposed to the "post-punk" per se more "arty" whatever sort of stuff.

Chapter is apparnetly set to release a second volume of the Primitve Calcuators CD with the amazing "Do That Dance" 7", the Little Bands 7" comp (No Wave replaced with more harsh analog synthesizers and less funk?) and various etc. etc.'s. Superior to the actual live Primitive Calculators LP/CD in many respects.

jarrod, Tuesday, 30 May 2006 09:13 (nineteen years ago)

yeah I heard about that primitive calcs + friends comp, sounds aces. good to hear about can't stop it 2!

lil' merzbow wow (haitch), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 09:22 (nineteen years ago)

This is fantastic news. I have Vol 1 and love it. I have been thrashing Do The Pop to death recently as well. Some of those bands were rocket fuel - Lime Spiders, Eastern Dark, Screaming Tribesmen, Birdman.

Dr.C (Dr.C), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 11:01 (nineteen years ago)

I have been trying to get Do The Pop, but I forgot what it was called. Now I know, and I can get it, when my restraining order is lifted at the beginning of July.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 11:11 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
i agree with jarrod's assessment of the tales and ICS comps but there's still some fantastic tracks amongst the rawk too. CSI2 should be fab.

phil turnbull (philT), Monday, 3 July 2006 22:49 (eighteen years ago)

hey tales 2 was out last week was it not? i need to find me a record store..

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Monday, 3 July 2006 22:56 (eighteen years ago)

Isn't it about time somebody releases a compilation called "Wizards Of Oz"?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 01:02 (eighteen years ago)

no

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 01:12 (eighteen years ago)

yay, i have tales 2 in hand

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 02:48 (eighteen years ago)

I need this. And I have no problem WHATSOEVER with hairy Australian rock.

Soukesian (Soukesian), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 05:53 (eighteen years ago)
