Are The White Stripes just Royal Trux for Radio 2 listeners?

Inspired by listening to Vets Of Dis last night after hearing that track with Holly Golightly from Elephant on, yup, Radio 2. That Holly Golightly track was, I thought, awful hokey ironic country dirge shit.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 11 April 2003 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

can jess do a 'these threads are getting too circular' etc etc type stuff plz.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 11 April 2003 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

The Orb, c/d

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 11 April 2003 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Have we done this before? Sorry! I avoid WS threads generally...

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 11 April 2003 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

well the white stripes ahs been discussed like crazy round here BUT i don't think that statement has been uttered before. but anyway...

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 11 April 2003 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Let's all listen to RTX and not worry about it!

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 11 April 2003 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

well, i only have "thank you" and it turns me off for a lot of the same reasons the white stripes do, ie it's a load of boogie woogie cock-rock arse.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 11 April 2003 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Royal Trux. Hi.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 11 April 2003 10:39 (twenty-two years ago)

"Thank You' is easily the worst album to go for if yr only going to own one. Even "Twin Infinitives" makes more sense. Maybe you should hear some stuff off "Accelerator"?

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 11 April 2003 10:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i liked that "stevie" song off accelerator. maybe i should check that album out, but i won't be rushing out to get anything by them after "thank you"...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 11 April 2003 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Accelerator and Vets Of Dis are both great.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 11 April 2003 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Tis true they have/had a lot of contempt for their sizeable audience, but don't junkies just come up with the neatest ideas sometimes?

I like Cats and Dogs, and the double CD anthology. Their last few records bore me, bar "The Banana Question", my favourite record about nothing at all.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 11 April 2003 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't get a Trux vibe from the White Stripes. I can see how they are similar musically (all in good ways), but they both have different sounds. Both worthy bands, too.

Now The Kills - that's the Trux Lite band.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 11 April 2003 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Also:

I agree that Thank You is not Royal Trux's best work.

You should try Veterans Of Disorder, Accellerator, or the Singles & Live 2 cd set.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 11 April 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

the white stripes are a flat duo jets for black francis fans.

scott seward, Friday, 11 April 2003 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i hate the white stripes, the ghastly limited basic re-hashed retro music, the pr campaign and media overkill, the red and white clothes ...yuck

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 11 April 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

or a gun club for wilco fans. I can't remember which.

scott seward, Friday, 11 April 2003 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Royal Trux's last three albums are their best.
White Stripes are maybe RTX turned inside out. Maybe. I doubt. Very very dissimilar. White Stripes often sound a lot more like Railroad Jerk.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 11 April 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Royal Trux's last three albums are their best.

You really think so, Horace?

I rate Accelerator, but maybe I need to listen to Veterans of Disorder again...

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 11 April 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Out of the three, Accelerator and Pound For Pound are better. But maybe just the first side of Vets. "Water Park" "Stop" and "The Exception" are all great tracks.
I guess it depends on what side of the Trux you like to ride. I like their, uh, fucked up classick rock stuff.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 11 April 2003 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the stuff like "Back To School", "Chairman Blow", and "Junkie Nurse", what I think of as the "skewed blues stuff". uhhhh, I get the feeling we're kind of talking about the same thing.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 11 April 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

to-may-to to-mah-to

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 11 April 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

My housemate was listening to the new White Stripes album. I thought she'd burnt some really bad mp3s that someone had created in Realplayer or something, but, no, apparently it's meant to sound like that. Especially that 'Seven Nation Army' song. Maybe they encoded it for that authentic mp3-esque sound before sending it off to be mastered?

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Friday, 11 April 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard the whole album was ripped on a pre-1999 version of Winamp.

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 11 April 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

1) Don't say Thank You never gave you anything! "Map of the City" is like the best Trux song ever, fools!

2) "Shockwave Rider" (simply "Good Times, Bad Times" run through a stereo chorus pedal, re-written, and sucked into a balloon)

3) everything on Cats and Dogs

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 11 April 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Thank You, esp. "Ray-O-Vac" and "Horror James" and "You're Gonna Lose"

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 11 April 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I like it (a LOT) too, but DUDES it is surely not a good place to go to start w/RTX, that's all I was saying... "Map of the City" and "You're Gonna Lose" esp. rule, YES.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 11 April 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank You is one of the best Trux albums, and they're my all time favorite band.

This thread's question is stupid.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 11 April 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

you are correct sir.
Royal Trux kicks ass.
What do you think of NMH's solo stuff though Roger?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 11 April 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

roger is right -- Thank You is one of RTX's best albums, the Rolling Stones monkey on their back fully stroked with loving attention.

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 11 April 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

As something of a rabid fan, I liked the first NMH, didn't really like the second one at all, and am counting the days (6) until the new one. The song I heard from it ("Greasy Saint," MP3 on the Drag City website) is very good. Acoustic

I've seen him live a lot too and it's hit and miss.

To me, Royal Trux were / are the perfect rock and roll band, period. No one comes close.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 11 April 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I really really like Royal Trux too. But I find myself really trying hard to get into the NMH stuff. I like more on the first one than the second, but I do appreciate the pace the guy works at.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 11 April 2003 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Haven't got any of the solo stuff yet dammit. It's languishing on my "to buy" list.

Am I alone in thinking Sweet Sixteen might be their best record?

Also, favorite song off Thank You is probably "The Sewers of Mars", but "Map of the City" is excellent as well.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 11 April 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it "Map of the City" with that line about how sailors have to masturbate?
Cuz isn't "Shaved C*nt" on NMH Plays That Old Time Rock & Roll sort of about the same thing?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 11 April 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i think Weird War is good too!

dave q, Friday, 11 April 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

ass grass or ga-a-ass, no one rides for free!

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 11 April 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Weird War was too much Ian, not enough Neil

I love Sweet Sixteen too - I own three copies of it

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 11 April 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

WW is such a perfect name for the CD, every song sounds like TWO songs being played at the same time and only in the same key by coincidence

dude the lyrics for Map of the City are so fucked and blunt:

I rolled out from under the engine
and I saw her standing there
I knew right then I could love her forever
even when her breasts are rotted with cancer

Mm, romantic!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

but it IS romantic, that's the thing.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

'Thank You' was the alb that got me INTO the Trux - RIP David Briggs ('Henry's Dream' is Nick Cave's best solo alb too)

White Stripes are more like John Spencer Lite/Shite

Andrew L (Andrew L), Friday, 11 April 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Mmf...David Briggs' production on Henry's Dream keeps it from perfection. I much prefer the live takes on Live Seeds.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 April 2003 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

After being on this thread, I dug out Accelerator, and damn if it isn't a great album. My favourite lyric from the aforementioned "Stevie":

People think that the United States are a sweet bowl of plastic flowers

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Saturday, 12 April 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Or is it boat of plastic flowers????? I dunno.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Saturday, 12 April 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

You realize, of course, that that song is allegedly about Steven Seagal.

And yes it rules. I think it's "bowl" of plastic flowers, and 'you put the fisticuffs on me" is also brilliant

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 12 April 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Only until the White Stripes released an utterly confusing home video and get their friends to run around town in Nixon masks....

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 12 April 2003 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Not far off, surely.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 12 April 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

sweet sixteen took to long to get mentioned.

"why you gonna raise your hand, make the pickup? when you gonna get sent down alone.."

matthew james (matthew james), Sunday, 13 April 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

"he don't know how the cameras work, but there's always someone there to fix it" or something like that...

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 14 April 2003 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

my favourite tracks with RTX is
The Spectre + Let´s get lost
Cats and dogs are my favorite form
the ones i´ve heard.
