Ess Kay (esskay), Friday, 11 April 2003 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

you got include mary j blige family affair. the production on that kicks my ass all over town.

'Addictive' was actually 'produced' by DJ Quik - Dre's role on a lot of these tracks seems to be more akin to that of a director on a film, calling the shots and producing vague ideas/concepts but not actually generating the music and arranging it. even on a lot of Eminem's work I notice Dre is not listed in the writer/producer credits. i think its the same deal with P Diddy. maybe we can turn this into a discussion about the nature of Dre's role as it always seems quite cloudy, making it difficult to evaluate him as an actual producer.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 April 2003 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i know this is par for the course with so much rock and pop music - and i'm used to the definition of producer in dance music which has always been literally the producer generating the music with the help of engineers. hip hop and r n'b seem to fall between those two definitions more. so was DJ Quik the engineer for 'Addictive' or what? i would be really interested to read what a lot of producers actually do in general e.g. Trevor Horn with TATU, Beyonce with Destiny's Child because it doesnt seem as clear compared to say the likes of the Chemical Brothers or indeed Stargate (Blue etc.)

1 - Lady of Rage - "Afro Puffs" (the long club mix where snoop goes "snoop dogg is on the mic and I'm a dope mother (*music cuts out*) fucker, yeah"
2 - Dre - "Keep Their Heads Ringing"
3 - Dre/Cube - "Natural Born Killaz"
4 - Blackstreet - "No Diggedy"
5 - 2pac - "California"
6 - 50 cent "In Da Club"
7 - Dre - "Lil Ghetto Boy"
8 - Dre - "The Next Episode"
9 - Eminem - "Guilty Conscience"
10 - NWA - "Dopeman"

M Carty (mj_c), Friday, 11 April 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Was "No Diggedy" actually Dre, or did he just rap on it?

M Carty (mj_c), Friday, 11 April 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

it was produced by Teddy Riley - he just guested (& pretty well, too).

Ess Kay (esskay), Friday, 11 April 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, scratch that one from my Dre productions top 10, then!

I think I'd replace it with Nas - "Nas is Coming"

I'm always in two minds as to whether or not Dre's that good a rapper, but I think he's really good on "Keep Their Heads Ringing", "Express Yourself" and "No Diggedy".

M Carty (mj_c), Friday, 11 April 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

good call on 'Dopeman', but i still want clarification on Dre's producer role generally

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 April 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Dre is one of the most boring rappers around content-wise. but then i'm not his intentional target audience so why should i give a fuck about how great he thinks he is or how much cash he's got (another example of my 'liking medium, hating message' syndrome)?

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 April 2003 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know, you can't hate too badly on anyone who comes out with a line as absurd as "Your chances of jacking me are slim, G/ Cos I rock from summer til Santa comes down the chimney"

M Carty (mj_c), Friday, 11 April 2003 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

or "homicidal like Jeff Dahmer/ suicidal like Nirvana"

dave q, Friday, 11 April 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave q, my hat is duly doffed

M Carty (mj_c), Friday, 11 April 2003 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

aside from a couple trax on Chronic 2001, he hasn't done a great beat in years and years and years. i respect his history, but he ain't been hot in a long time.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 11 April 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

You know, that line makes no sense, about the Santa and the chimney. It implies that post Christmas til Summer, you've got a pretty solid chance of jacking Dre. I dunnae think that's what he wanted to imply. THE FOOL, he let everyone in on his springtime weakness.

PS California Love is the best song ever and no one can convince me otherwise.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 11 April 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, it made me want to move to Compton!

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 11 April 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Without Me is No. 1 u r all gay.

jm (jtm), Friday, 11 April 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Without Me never made me want to visit Compton though. So it's obv. #2, u r the gay 1.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 11 April 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Satisfaction is a way better Eve track.

& the confusion on Addictive I think is that he was executive producer for the whole frikin album which doesn't always mean for each track. The ones he actually hands-on produced on the album are "Push Play" which is the intro, "Jimmy", and "Queen of the Ghetto" which is really awesome.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 11 April 2003 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

No 1 who's not gay would want 2 visit Compton. There4 U r gay.

jm (jtm), Saturday, 12 April 2003 05:59 (twenty-two years ago)

sweet mother of christ imagine the music with stevem as the intentional target audience!

zemko (bob), Saturday, 12 April 2003 10:59 (twenty-two years ago)

are you imagining it zemko? do you dare? what on earth would it sound like? oh the horror...the dreary joyless horror eh?

if i like a track with Dre's name over it its got absolutely nothing to do with whatever he's talking about and almost everything to do with the hook. but if you've been listening to/hearing the same song lyrically for over 10 years thats just a self-indulgent/arrogant ego-trip then wouldnt you get tired of the automated by-numbers nature of it after that time? if not why not? that was my point really - i HATE entertainment, and lyrics, obviously...

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 12 April 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry i've steered thir thread away from Dre as 'producer' (whatever that means, heh) and lyricist/rapper. i do actually like the ten tracks in Ess Kay's list in some capacity - chiefly for, as i say, great great hooks

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 12 April 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

That "Dahmer/Nirvana" line is Ice Cube's anyway isn't it?
