y'know. like the rest of the world moved on, but you're still screaming at everybody about them...
I'd say, for me:

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 11 April 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Silkworm, I guess. To the extent that anyone ever cared about them, I guess their commercial peak was about 8 years ago. But I bought their most recent album and loved it.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Friday, 11 April 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha, just like in this thread's evil twin, I can say Fishbone. Most people I talk to don't even know they've released anything since Give a Monkey a Brain... (they've released 3 full-lengths and 2 EPs since then, btw).

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 11 April 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Spiritualized, Primal Scream, Digital Underground, P-Funk, Kool Keith...

Drop Nineteens. I was the only person on the planet who thought 'National Coma' was better than 'Delaware'.

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 11 April 2003 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

b-b-b-but, Shakey, we do still care about those people!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 11 April 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, shit, I've listened to Dr. Dooom, Spankmaster, and Motor Booty Affair in the past 6 hours!

I hate to say it Nickalicious, but we are (sadly) a small majority. I get tired of repeatedly defending all of those bands (and Fishbone too!)

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 11 April 2003 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Tons of faceless emo/hardcore bands from the early/mid nineties--Heroin, Indian Summer, Hoover, Policy of 3, Palatka, Ordination of Aaron, Assfactor 4, etc.

Maybe if they did more of this:

And less of this:

people would still care about them, but I've never accused Nicky Wire of paying attention to my opinion.

I keep hoping that The Grifters will put out another record, but it looks like they are history, which to me is a sad thing.

I've never stopped listening to the Jesus Lizard, don't know how much people really think of them these days.

The Melvins and Mudhoney have become obsessions once again, both of their latest records are good.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 12 April 2003 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

not too long ago, i had a reunion with my undergrad college roomate/apartment mate -- among other things, he was the one who introduced me to the works of Gary Numan, Soft Cell, and Depeche Mode (back when I was dismissing Numan as a Bowie rip-off, and making fun of Marc Almond and David Gahan). as i've said elsewhere, i've been getting back into Numan/Soft Cell/DM-style synth-pop lately -- and i told him as much. his reaction was "jesus, tad, you still listen to that old stuff?!?" fwiw, he's been listening to lots of Sigur Ros and emo lately ('nuff said -- though we're still friendly!)

oh yeah, i've got all y'all beat with my Zappa obsession. 'cept Alex in NYC -- no-one can top his Killing Joke obsession!

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 12 April 2003 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh oh another great one--

Urge Overkill.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Saturday, 12 April 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Although I'm not convinced that anyone else actually cared about Geneva in the first place.

I was a *huge* Geneva fan. I never got around to getting their second album (which is probably deleted now anyway) but the two singles from it were just as good (if not better) than anything from the first album. I think it's a crying shame they split up.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 13 April 2003 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I never got around to getting [Geneva's] second album

To tell the truth, neither did I: probably the combination of having no money and by that time hanging around with people who listened solely to mainstream US punk and were trying to win me over to The Cause. And then, about a year later, I rediscovered my stash of the first album's singles - which have the most wonderfully-designed sleeves - and couldn't understand why I'd ever almost-forgotten about them. The second album's on my list of things to look for in charity shops, on the grounds that *someone* must have kept it until now.

cis (cis), Sunday, 13 April 2003 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

"Superchunk. I love Superchunk. "

oh word. in my opinion, they peaked with Here's Where The Strings Come In, and Come Pick Me Up was great.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 14 April 2003 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

*whimper* But I'll spare you.

I do have that second Geneva album, so if you need a burn of it...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 April 2003 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 April 2003 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i still like Brian Molko (well his tunes anyway)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 14 April 2003 02:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I still like Moloko, but not really, because I just wanted to extend the thread.

Nick Mirov (nick), Monday, 14 April 2003 05:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I still like Mono, even though I've only heard one song.
(quick, someone think of somebody starting with the letter 'N'!)

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 14 April 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Reviewers who refer to bands that are still actively recording/touring in the past tense = DUD. (note: This post is a knee-jerk reaction to Rolling Stone's recent review of Fishbone's Sony-years compilation CD; a decent review, BUT, like I said, REFERRING TO ACTIVE BANDS IN THE PAST TENSE = TOTAL DUD.)

IMHO, of course.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 14 April 2003 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Cis, I too was a Geneva fan. Hell, I have all of the cd singles and 7" singles from the first album. Funny thing is that I didn't get the second album, either. The singer once sang a Radiohead song to me, which I just found awkward. heh.
As for bands I still care about, I would say Jack and Animals That Swim.

Jonathan, Monday, 14 April 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Jack are a good one, although the only Jack album i own is the one from last year, curiously. Also ROC, although they didn't really set the world on fire to begin with. And i cared about Kylie during the period 1996-1999.

alexfack (alexfack), Monday, 14 April 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The Loud Family. I loved them up 'til their last album, and am in fact listening to _Plants & Birds..._ now. Also Tender Trap - even the indiepoppers have moved on from Amelia Fletcher, but I thought _Film Molecules_ was a fine CD.

mike a (mike a), Monday, 14 April 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm 100% feeling the Jawbox (Does music get better than "Savory" or "Chinese Fork Tie") and Grifters mentions above...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 14 April 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I was put off the Tender Trap album by terrible reviews and a badly pressed copy of the Fortuna Pop single. I might get it anyway because I am a sucker for Amelia.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 14 April 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the album, but it didn't make a particularly great impression. More synthy as I recall, and less driven but still y'know, melody and stuff (geir do you like Heavenly?)

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I still like Quicksand.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 06:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, good point Sterling. Howcum Geir doesn't post about all the indie/twee/pop bands? They're right up his alley.

still love the Levitation records, mzui. good call.

my "votes" go to (post-XYZ) Moose and Sharkboy, two sadly disparaged and oft-neglected bands. "Honey Bee" forever holds a special place in my heart and "Matinee" - from start to finish - is flawless
