Lauren Thackeray, Friday, 11 April 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Also starring Billy Dee Williams as Charley Patton.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 11 April 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

but neither of those dudes look like Johnson or Patton!

hstencil, Friday, 11 April 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

That's why it's called ACTING

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

*sigh*
I do anything to see Puff Daddy drop dead from drinking poisoned moonshine...

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

ANYthing?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, short of, say, paying 7.50 to watch a movie about it.
But i'd be happy to sit on a barstool and watch Puff Daddy writhe in agony on the floor.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't really have the stomach for hired murder anyway.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, if you wanna MUG him, thats cool too.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck. Um.....well...I don't even know what to say...except maybe...um...GOD DAMNIT GOD DAMNIT NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Why...were YOU looking forward to playing Johnson, and you lost the part to H&R Puffendaddy?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

well, Patton will probably be played by Tommy Lee Jones in the sequel anyway...

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.rapsheet.com/sound/picture-frame-50cent-n.jpg

Yo, somebody need something?

50 Cent, Friday, 11 April 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

custos, why do you hate puffy?

st, Friday, 11 April 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm actually saying "NOOO!" mostly because I have a bad feeling this also means they're gonna license some Robert Johnson tunes to Puffy which will then be raped and milked and squeezed dry of all the soul and rapped-really-horribly-over-top-of in that "I'm P. Diddy I don't have to learn to develop any actual mic skills, fules, I'm just gonna say the same stuff I say in every song and then get some hot girl to sing the hook, here ya go" style.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe it has to do with the fact that he decided to call himself MUTHAFUKIN' PUFFY, and then compound the sin by changing it to P Diddy! Just hearing either one of those names sets my teeth one edge.
That and I'm bored by his music.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

old poor black people = soulful
famous popular well-to-do black people = soulless

st, Friday, 11 April 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

thats quite a reason to want to kill someone, 'lord custos epsilon'

st, Friday, 11 April 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I think you can reduce it to:
poor people=soulful
well-to-do-people=soulless

Nick A. (Nick A.), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, trife...all I said was I didn't like his music or his handle. I never said I gave a rats ass about how much "soul" he has|not got.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Puffy rules. Anyone who watched Making the Band would know that.

Ben Williams, Friday, 11 April 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not offended, really. I don't find it sacreligious. But.. can he act?

Adam A. (Keiko), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and can a moderator fix the thread title. We've got his name wrong. Thanks.

Adam A. (Keiko), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

He was OK in Monster's Ball. Not much of a role tho.

Ben Williams, Friday, 11 April 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Based on Love in Vain, written by the same person that wrote Fitzcarraldo, I believe

too bad this isn't for the cinema, it would be more appealing

steve k (http://go.to/stevek) (stevek10), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

but.. can he act
I think Jimmy Guterman said it best when he asserted:

nbsp;8 Rock stars are not actors.
nbsp;9 Actors are not rock stars.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

custos my 'soul' post was in response to nickalicious

st, Friday, 11 April 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I 100% sincerely think we should boycott the film.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry, trife. My bad.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

did nickalicious say that James Brown was soulless, to mention one famous popular well-to-do black person?

hstencil, Friday, 11 April 2003 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

b-but 'lord custos' you criticised puffy for his name and yours is just as bad, if not worse! ;-)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

But Nickalicious thinks black people are great!!

Adam A. (Keiko), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

yo hstencil check that i also said 'old', of course old black people are 'soulful', like funk musicians, or morgan freeman helping out the new young white detective!!

st, Friday, 11 April 2003 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

b-but 'lord custos' you criticised puffy for his name and yours is just as bad, if not worse! ;-)
Hahahahahaha!
< FAKE ANGER >
What!? I am the 43rd Earl of Custos, and master of the Holy See of Epsilon. Puff Daddy is named after some sort of generic warehouse-store knock-off brand of cocoa puffs. My NAME REIGNS SUPREME!

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

ooops.
< /FAKE ANGER >

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

But Nickalicious thinks black people are great!!
...especially on Rye bread with spicy brown mustard...

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

...and Peter Falk as H.C. Speir.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

nbsp;8 Rock stars are not actors.
nbsp;9 Actors are not rock stars.

But Puffy's not a rock star.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

shut up you guys you dont even know!! nickalicious has friends who are black!!

st, Friday, 11 April 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought you had a Phish show to go to with Nick somewhere.

As I have always hated blues bores with a deep and abiding passion, I hope this movie is made and makes Eric Clapton destroy all his guitars in a fit of pique.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 April 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

trife, you're an idiot.

For clarification, thinking Puffy = soulless =!= "famous popular well-to-do black people = soulless."

hstencil, Friday, 11 April 2003 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Is trife one of those people we're supposed to ignore and hope they go away? Or are we supposed to tolerate him and pretend he's funny?

Nick A. (Nick A.), Friday, 11 April 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

lets keep black people old and dead and poor so they can make good music!! (or unpopular and spacey and 'weird' since the other good kind of music is indie)

st, Friday, 11 April 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

*sigh*
I'm voting for "ignore"

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 11 April 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Simon's history with ILX is long and tangled...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 April 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

However we might have found a solution for P. Diddy leaving his mouth hanging open all the time:

http://www.danlacey.com/Blues%20Artists-Robert%20Johnson_files/image002.jpg

(Haha funny how Steven LaVere claims ownership of that photo, which he didn't take--quite possibly he wasn't even alive when it was taken.)

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 11 April 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

this is just too fucking funny for me NOT to be happy about it.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 11 April 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

LaVere has a lot to answer for, as do most of the bluesniks who scoured the great state of Miss. for old blues performers and 78s. I mean how much worse can a new movie about Johnson be than that high point of cinema "Crossroads"? (I see that Mark at Pitch Fork beat me to it.)

What's interesting about Robert Johnson's death is that no one really knows what happened, or where he's buried, or anything. No doctor signed his death certificate; if anyone actually saw his body I'm not aware of it. There are quite reputable blooze researchers who believe that RJ got kilt not for hittin' on a woman but for taking money out the till at the joint where he was last seen--he was a thief. Probable poison was arsenic. And that his body was thrown into the swamp down there in the delta. I mean I could be totally wrong--let's dig 'im up and find out.

It happened in 1938 but it might as well have been 1638--no one knows what really happened, and I'm betting no one ever will. Especially some people in Hollywood slumming around in de south.

Jess Hill (jesshill), Friday, 11 April 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

st you should really listen to nickalicious' stuff online (cld. you post the link again nickalicious?) -- you'll gain a new respect for his skills even if it is mainly corny undie stuff.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 11 April 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i really don't know how I feel about this yet, but can anyone tell me if Robert Johnson is going to wear Sean John exclusively?

steve k (http://go.to/stevek) (stevek10), Friday, 11 April 2003 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh Christ....

maria b (maria b), Friday, 11 April 2003 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Somebody attempt assassination on Puffy instead of Snoop, please.

maria b (maria b), Friday, 11 April 2003 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

nineteen years pass...

Sad we didn't get this

hootenanny-soundtracking clusterfucks about milking cows (Neanderthal), Thursday, 6 April 2023 01:13 (two years ago)

nbsp;8 Rock stars are not actors.
nbsp;9 Actors are not rock stars.

Some fine exceptions to that - David Bowie, Jenny Lewis, Debbie Harry, Tom Waits...list grows if you count rock stars playing themselves (the Beatles, Mick Jagger more or less in Performance, Iggy Pop, etc.)

Andre Braugher should've played Robert Johnson when he was still the right age. Hollywood missed their chance.

birdistheword, Thursday, 6 April 2023 03:03 (two years ago)

This thread sure is a frosty can of ILM Classic®
