jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 12 April 2003 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

mike taylor to thread to tell us how "big booty hoez and slutz too" is a heartbreaking paean to the desolate pre-dawn streets of the murder city

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 12 April 2003 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

jess unless you're from "tha D" as we like to call it you'll never truly appreciate the subtleties of the genre.

I was absolutely addicted to DJ Godfather's "Playa Hatas in dis House" when it came out but other than that never felt too compelled to explore this shit much further.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 12 April 2003 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't imagine why anyone would want to listen to the tracks "on the natural" (un-mixed) but those assault mixes are fucking blinding...the mersh one (off the chain for the y2k...oh and the one on mo wax...haha talk about trying to regain cred in the face of waning relevance) are good but not quite so headwrecking.

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 12 April 2003 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Jess, email me if you'd like a burn of Vol. 5. I was in a record store today in a Detroit suburb and they had a new Disco D 12" that had some connection to the Booty Bar in NY (I think it's a club night name, at least), so it's still going in some form, even outside of Detroit. The Friday/Saturday night mix showson the radio still generally play the same tracks from the past couple years. I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for it...

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Saturday, 12 April 2003 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i love ghettotech like "ass & titties" -- who couldn't? -- but i'm not sure that subtleties are the measure of merit you're looking for.

notfazed (notfazed), Saturday, 12 April 2003 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Jess, you just havent heard Superugly by Mr. De on Electrofunk records.

It was never a fad, Godfather is still selling the same 2,000 records to the same street jocks in Detroit that he has always been selling to. Your attention has just shifted to the current ILM fad which you will disown in a couple years anyway.

And no matter what, Godfather: Live From Legends on WJLB was more kick ass than anything else on the radio in Detroit 1997.

btw, I win.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Saturday, 12 April 2003 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

also, weren't you the one bitching about circular threads a little earlier?

Mike Taylor (mjt), Saturday, 12 April 2003 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

did you ever go back to the derrick may thread mike?
i was looking foreward to hearing more from you,but i didn't notice it reappear...

robin (robin), Saturday, 12 April 2003 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I am majorly guilty of procrastination, Robin. I will finish it, honestly, I swear. I know what I have to say, I have just been putting off typing it out.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Saturday, 12 April 2003 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Mike, what's the one that goes "Where you from? Who you wit? Where you from? Who you wit?"

I'm not talking about "All the Players Represent", different tune.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 12 April 2003 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

don't worry,i'm the same mike
just though you might have forgotten

robin (robin), Saturday, 12 April 2003 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr. Diamond: that's "Who U Wit?" by DJ Deeon on Databass.

Speaking of waning relevance, there's a recently released DJ Godfather mix that's totally great but weirdly features liners by Mike Shallcross from Grand Central (the Rae+Christian label).

Also there's a Disco D / Princess Superstar song that's making the rounds (it's shit hot). So round here I'm hearing more ghettotech than ever - it's just weird to hear it at boho electroclash nights.

Mr. Diamond: that's "Who U Wit?" by DJ Deeon on Databass.

Most excellent!!! Thank you, vahid! I've been wondering who did that ever since I heard it in a mix on WJLB about three years ago...

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 13 April 2003 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Being ensconsed in Britain the knowledge that ghettotech was ever a "fad" is new to me... perhaps when Belle Isle Tech came out there was a bit more of a flutter over it, but apart from that... Have any of you people heard Debasser yet? Fat Girls is one of the TUNES of last year... pretty much everyone you've mentioned has been playing his stuff, as is my understanding.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Sunday, 13 April 2003 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh nice, I was just about to bring up Baltimore Club music. Man, that shit's the best. Yeah, ghetto tech is sort of similar, except it's dirtier and more electro-based.

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Monday, 14 April 2003 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

seward reviews baltimore club stuff in the voice and it sounded great but i wasn't sure -- just got some k-perfect san francisco comps though -- house, freestyle, hi-nrg perfection.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 14 April 2003 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Just got sent a new comp thru the post today funnily enough... called a night at the booty bar, mixed by disco d on tommy boy... it's bloody good! of course it has ass and titties by dj assault but tons of dj deeon on there and that's enough for me to love it...

Dave Stelfox, Monday, 14 April 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...

I just got the Disco D mix and I can confirm that it rules. It's a lot more minimal than Godfather or Assault, most tracks just bounce along on an 808 bass drop and some electro zaps. There's tons of elaborate vocal stuff on top of it and great scratching, too. This must be the golden age of ghetto tech or something...

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 03:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, and it has rap acapellas on it, which is great. B.G. is on it, w/ "Hottest of the Hot" (Disco D mix). This is, of course, heart-stoppingly cool beyond belief.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Not as short as the shortest ever hip hop trend "screw"...

screwed mixes are still really popular...

and I have some ghettotech mixes that I've downloaded from Soulseek. Is there a good historical intro online or off?
