Don Cornelius ended his run as host in 1993, and guest hosts were used from that time until 1997, when comedian Mystro Clark began a two-year stint as host. Clark was replaced by actor Shemar Moore in 1999. In 2003, Moore was succeeded by the current host, actor Dorian Gregory.

Don Cornelius was one of the only people to continue hosting a semi-successful music show posthumously. And I dont even want to know how he pulled this off.

The Don is great as the guy's name is Don Cornelius...c'mon with a name like that, you got power. That doesn't even touch that deep baritone voice which basstones can be picked up by whales in the ocean.

Dead by his own hand at 75. Just awful news. You brought music and joy to so many Don Cornelius.

wow. thanks for that.
this makes me sad. i watched S.T. all through the 1980s, on lazy saturday afternoons in chicago. i remember they had some hot chicks among the dancers. and don cornelius has crazy charisma and good humor.

he was probably one of the only people in the 1970s to give David Bowie a bollocking. Bowie says himself he was so out of it during the rehearsals for his Soul Train performance in 1975 that Cornelius took him to one side and had a word with him "after the third or fourth take" about his inabality to get his shit together or remember the words of the songs.

Just read Nelson George's The Hippest Trip in America. Less insightful, and much heavier on the anecdotes, than I would have expected from George, but I cannot imagine a fan of the show not wanting to read this. As someone who wasn't around for its best days, it particularly serves as a handy guide as to which performances I should be checking out on YouTube.

I made a playlist of all of the performances specifically referenced in the book (the ones I could find, anyway). By no means a consensus on which are the essential performances--the Bowie ones are noted in the book for how *bad* they are--but maybe helpful to the Soul Train novice (I also capped off the playlist with the VH1 doc produced in conjunction with the book):
