Albums you were certain you owned...

...Hi ILX - Here's the thing. It's the weekend. Sleep, Sun. Bagels for breakfast. All should be well in the Nordicskillz household. Only...I've spent all morning looking for Prince's "1999". And I can't find the fucking thing. I can visualize the spine, but the Nordicstacks (tm) will not yield. And I'm beginning to think...did I ever own it? Or do I just know it so well that i think I own it? But then, of course I have my own copy! Or do I?

What are the albums that you know so well you could swear you own them...but maybe don't?

This thread has clearly been done Many Times Before.

Or...like I said, it's the weekend, and no-one's on ILX.

Jennie Bomb by Sahara Hotnights. Actually, there's no question at all that I own it (I actually remember making the purchase), but now I want to hear it and can't find it fucking anywhere! I've been looking for almost two days.

Somewhere a music gremlin is makin' luuurve and rocking out in equal measure, then...

That same music gremlin feels guilty for his fun afterwards when he listens to the copy of "OK Computer" I bought in '97, which mysteriously disappeared shortly thereafter. I bought a new one a couple years later after having turned my house over under sideways down looking for it.

This happens to me all the time, but it's usually because i often sell things out of desperation before burning or copying them and regret it later. At one point I kept a log on Microsoft Word of everything I sold - dated and everything - but just sorta gave up when it got to be too many pages. Most recently this occurred while searching for a record I actually play on, but it was nowhere to be found, which of course is a bummer. Several Misfits bootlegs have also inexplicably gone missing recently, as well as several Labradford CDs and the Magnetic Fields box set.

How many of you fools have re-bought stuff? Lordy, I could tell you stories. Even beyond records: I've bought - and sold - the Big Muff guitar pedal FOUR TIMES. I currently don't own one but I'm sure the next time I feel like rocking out I'll take my Visa card to Sam Ash and get a new one, then when the Sleep kick once again hibernates for the season, up on ebay it goes.

six years pass...

I've had entire discographies disappear. All my Os Mutantes disappeared. I think an ex-girlfriend took 'em ten years ago. I could have sworn I had my Fugazi CDs at work and were stolen there. So I wrote to Dischord to buy them all again, and they were kind enough to sell them for just $5 each. Then it turned out a friend had them for years, and didn't bother to return them. I asked him to either give them back so I can sell them and recoup my losses, or buy them from me for what I paid Dischord. He gave me some cash, but was $10 short. What a dick. I didn't make an issue of it so as not to appear petty. At least I got to replace them with remasters.

Recently I could have sworn I bought the last Earth album just a couple months ago, but I can't find it anywhere.

This is like my whole life. Often complicated by music-o-phile roommates who own the same things and also sell you their stuff/vice-versa and no one can remember what happened.

A few weeks ago I looked for Travelogue by the Human League, which I couldn't find (despite owning the entire Human League catalog on vinyl).. I dreamed last night I was looking at a copy - which was weird in itself. Than later today I found two copies at a record fair. I didn't buy either as I was convinced I still have a copy at home.

I plan to spend the evening looking through every record I own to find the bloody thing..

how sad....
