is the new autechre album any good?

Confield has been out awhile and I'm still not sure whether to buy it or not. I loved the EPs, 7.1 and 7.2, however I went to see them live in March and they were shit, sort of. Good to start with but at the end I felt like I had spent the last hour inside a power drill. I've heard its like Chiastic Slide? Any suggestions

We discussed the new album in Autechre: Classic or Dud. Good thread btw with interesting ideas. But anyway: I like it a lot. Don't play it too often because the wealth of excellent music in the past few months but...I was glad they opened their sound again, let it breath a bit (I'm a bit of an Amber man more than Chiastic Slide for instance). Some really amazing sounds also, like the start of the 1st track. I don't like them live though.

well, tom. its more chiastic than amber thats for sure, but i think its a bit of a break again from more recent stuff (check the autechre thread for more on this). half of it is brilliant, the rest is pretty good.

where did you see them anyway? i saw them at the brixton fridge in april, and they were very very good (despite stilted crowd and excessive heat)

I've never heard them but want to know how to pronounce their name; is it Oh-TEK-Ray?

Sean, Wednesday, 11 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

ahh-tek-grrr

according to warpsite, there is no correct pronunciation.

i have always said or-tek-er. to rhyme with daydreamer

it didn't impress me terribly, it just sounded like lots of blustery noise and DSP without much attention to making an interesting listen - and i own damn near all of their other releases, so i'm speaking as a 'fan', i suppose. i'll probably buy the actual CD someday (i have it as mp3s ATM), but i was more impressed by the new mouse on mars. but they're german, and more fun at parties.

Let me have a guess. I guess it's 50-50. I'll go for 'No'.

it took me a long while to get it but thankfully i kept trying. their predilection for murkiness is refreshing, especially after being bored by the loop-loop-loop structure of 'tri repetae'. one of my autechre-knowledgeable friends sez it's the most subtle album he owns and i believe it. i mean, when it's good, it's really good. pen expers has about four seconds of godly beauty that i missed for the twenty listens until it finally clicked with me (as opposed to just clicking, as i dismissed it as being at first). everyone who has it, go and listen to it again now, just for me. thanks.

It's great. It's taken me a month to realise it, but last Saturday, twitching and shaking through caffeine abuse, I sat down and listened to it twice whilst posting to ILE on and off. And it worked. It finally made sense in my raddled state and continued to work as I recovered. Listened to it once subsequently and I now reckon it might well be the best thing they've ever done.

Back in the days of usenet, the general rec.music.ambient consensus pronunciation seemed to be Ow-Tech-Er. Boy, they are a pain in the ass for radio djs. Not only their name, but their impossible to pronounce song titles.

Ha. I just say em phonetically, weird or not. Then again usually I leave the cases at home, so I say something "that was a track from Autechre. It has some weird name."

three weeks pass...
Yeah I really dig it....good to see 'em moving away from their old sounds esp 'cause lesser talents (Funkstorung anyone?) have ripped 'em off and made the jittering beats thing cliche.
