Last times many Estonian young musicians have discovered good-old jazz-rock and fusion. Unbelieveable. The ex.punk-rockers, ex-skaheads have developed themselves as musicians and dont want compose 3-note and rehearse hardly-structured unchangeing songs. They want to be free, improvise in lives, extend songs, be creative. Instrumentals have made a ´huge come-back.
Fusion was big about 25 years (in Estonia 20 years) ago, but punk ended those grace. But now the fusion are making reincarnation. What about you?

I'm all for it.

In the US we called it "post-rock". But it peaked around 1999, and we're back to two-minute, three-chord garage-rock now.

i hope all the electro kids and roof-gazers in london start covering Yes a couple of years from now. that'd be excellent. a d'n'b revival version of 'heart of the sunrise' could bring down governments.

I can`t say its post rock. Its really fusion-rock a la Focus, Weather Report, Zawinul, rocking Miles Davis and so on.
We have our garage-rockers too, but the come-back of fusion is more interesting. Just `coz guys being hardcore punk-rockers in the past, making long wau-wau solos now :)

Wasn't Estonia the fake country from Doug? Oh wait, that's Yakastonia. I wonder what's happening there.

jazz-rock and fusion have always been moderately popular in canada and we have produced some famous fusion bands (ru$h).

but thankfully we have institutions to hold these people ...

... universities.

My favorite Estonian band is Macitajs on Acid. I hope they don't go jazz fusion on us.

Millar (Millar), Monday, 14 April 2003 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry Macitajs is Latvian band -- Latvia and Estonia are neighbours, both are Baltic states. But about the new Estonian fusion look http://mkdk.agentuur.ee/records.html and also http://www.dcc.ttu.ee/Bands (look bands like Luarvik Luarvik, Radio de Libertad, Beggars Farm, Mesi etc.)
about punk http://punk.bumpclub.ee/ (about all real estonian punk bands)

Margus...Out of curiosity what US/Uk bands have toured thru Estonia lately?

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Monday, 14 April 2003 06:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Luarvik Luarvik

This band name is genius.

Maybe we're due revival in the US/UK as well. I heard Dave Douglas's new album "Freak In" at the week end and it was very close to 70's Miles (but more composed through) with bits of electronica thrown in. Fusion in other words. If I'd known that in advance I'd probably have avoided it. But in fact it sounded absolutely wonderful, at least on a first listen.
